Bear Manager - Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre

Join a dedicated team in the rehabilitation and ongoing care of 170 rescued Asiatic black and Malayan sun bears at Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.

A highly motivated, experienced, and compassionate professional is sought to join our Bear and Vet Team. The position is located at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre, Tam Dao National Park -- approximately 90 minutes from the capital Hanoi.

The Bear Manager is responsible for overseeing teams of local bear care staff involved in the daily husbandry and management of rescued bears. The Bear Manager works closely with other Bear Managers, Bear Team Supervisors and the veterinary team to manage various daily operations.

The Bear Manager reports directly to department head, the Bear and Vet Team Director.


Responsibilities
  • Co-coordinating various daily operations:
    • Animal care and management;
    • Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs;
    • Ordering stock as required;
    • Maintaining bear behavior records & databases.
  • Operant conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements.
  • Report writing, including producing material used by the Communications Team for social media and the Animals Asia website.
  • Human resources:
    • Capacity building and training with the local bear care team;
    • Staff evaluations;
    • Ensuring morale is maintained within bear care staff;
    • Identifying and addressing HR issues with the Bear & Vet Team Director as they arise.
  • As needed:
    • Overseeing the quarantine of newly rescued bears;
    • Participate in the hand-rearing and care of newly rescued orphan cubs.
    • Managing the integration of bears into mixed sex, social groups.

The successful candidate would be asked to start in January 2018.

Requirements
§  University degree in zoology, biology, conservation, animal welfare, animal behaviour or related field.
§  Three to five years work experience in a captive wild animal facility or similar working environment.
§  Ability to manage own time effectively and prioritise tasks.
§  Computer literacy, including Excel.
§  Strong management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently.
§  Fluent in English.
§  A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team comprising both western and local staff in a rural area of Northern Vietnam.
§  Patience and willingness to work within a different culture are essential.
§  Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend work applicable.
