We have a seasonal opening for a zoo keeper to join our team. 4/5 days per week including a weekend day and bank holidays on rotation.
As a small organisation with a small team, we do not grant extended periods of annual leave during peak school holiday time. The position begins on the 1st of April and will be due to end in October after half term. Potential for contract extension depending on circumstances at the end of the seasonal position.
This is not a trainee/or new keeper position, we need somebody who can hit the ground running who is reliable and conscientious and already understands the inner workings of a zoos animal dept.
This is a key role within the team of keepers covering a variety of animal welfare and husbandry duties on all taxa. The position will take a proactive role in the daily management of all sections including our AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, ASIA, AMAZON, Reptile house and our free flight bird show.
Candidates must also have a strong work ethic and good team working and communication skills as well as the ability to maintain high levels of presentation.
Typical aspects of the role include:
  • Assist in the daily management and care of all animals on section.
  • Deliver top quality visitor experience.
  • Deliver talks, encounters, shows and keeper experiences to the visiting guests and schools. Confident speaking is an essential part of this role.
  • Drive a company vehicle for collection of resources, e.g. feed & medication, hay & straw etc.
Applicant requirements:
  • Applicants will have at least 1 full year paid work as a keeper in a zoological establishment.
  • Hold an animal-based qualification.
  • Applicants must have a full driving licence.
Other job holder expectations:
  • Ensure effective quality control and continuous improvement in all aspects of the work and responsibilities.
  • Preferable (but not essential) experience with positive reinforcement training.
  • Preferable (but not essential) experience free flying birds.
  • Understand and be mindful of the guest experience around the zoo. We are highly interactive and provide an immersive experience.
  • Understand the needs and requirements of a small business with a relatively small team.
  • Comply with and promote health and safety policies and procedures and to undertake recommended health and safety training as and when required.
  • Undertake such other duties as are relevant with the position.
