Section Leader – Birds & Presentations
We are
looking for a new Deputy Section Leader to help run our Birds Section and
develop and deliver a high standard of Animal Displays, Keeper Talks and
Educational Shows and Events here at Paradise Wildlife Park.
Job
Details:
• Full time (38.75 hours per week), permanent position
(08.00-17.00 Apr-Sept, 08.00-16.30 Oct-Mar); includes weekend and bank holiday
work with some overtime for evening work and events
• Starting salary £22,500 PA (to be reviewed after six-month
probationary period)
• 28 days holiday

Primary
Duties and Responsibilities include:
• Undertake/enforce extremely high standards of welfare and
husbandry routines; undertake & record accurate animal observations and
ensure other members of the team do the same
• Design and deliver high standards of visitor interaction in
the form of keeper talks, animal displays, encounters, experiences, tours, and
education events; Assist with the training and development of other staff,
Interns and Volunteers to deliver to the highest standard
• Work with the Section Leader to develop and include
appropriate educational material in talks, encounters and displays
• Help manage Section Keepers, work experience students,
volunteers & interns; run the Bird Section in the absence of the Section
Leader
• Maintain trained behaviours including weighing, flying and
others as specified by Section Leader and train new behaviours when required
(all training to meet current standards of positive reinforcement used across
the zoo)
• Ensure accurate and appropriate record keeping both in
diaries and on ZIMS, where appropriate
• Other duties to support effective and efficient running of
the site including Fire Marshall, First Aid, Company vehicle driver and general
site cleaning
Criteria
• Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience
• Has DMZAA or a Level 5+ animal management qualification.
• Thorough knowledge of most species on section and of other
species
• Proven high standard of record keeping (including ability
to navigate ZIMS)
• Full driving license and ability to drive larger zoo
vehicles
• Competent animal restraint knowledge and ability
• Able to undertake a good standard of basic veterinary nurse
skills
• Ability to train and develop other staff
• Proven high standard of animal training across various
species
Strong
communication skills (listening, written and verbal communication and eye
contact) are essential, as is the willingness to work flexible hours
(especially on weekends and during school holidays).
