to the largest collection of native and exotic animals in New Zealand.
Background:
Auckland Zoo, home
to the largest collection of native and exotic animals in New Zealand, is
taking a globally leading role in the collaborative One Plan approach to
integrated conservation management of wildlife and aspires to become a Centre
of Excellence in small population management. This newly established role will
work closely with Life Sciences staff to apply the Zoo's conservation and
welfare-focused Species Action Planning process for the species in its
collection, ensuring plans are grounded in good science, supported by
appropriate genetic and demographic analyses and understood by all relevant
stakeholders.
Qualifications &
experience required:
- Minimum 5 years Zoo experience in a senior life sciences role
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Demonstrated team leadership and management experience
- Extensive working knowledge and experience in use of animal records and population management software
- Sound understanding of genetics and demographics as applied to small populations
- Report and scientific writing skills
- Attention to detail, methodical and deadline focused
- Good time and personal workload management skills
- Desirable
- Post graduate degree in a biological science
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
- Group facilitation skills
- Familiarity with reporting requirements of the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) and New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) managed programmes or equivalent.
Auckland zoo is
looking for a team player to work alongside our curators, keepers, zoo vets and
external stakeholders. You will be comfortable working with a diverse range of
people so excellent written, listening and verbal communication skills are a must.
