Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

A temporary position has become available for a keeper to work on our Ape Section. Hands-on experience with primates is essential, as well as experience with Apes. An animal-related qualification is desirable.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday and 5% employer’s pension contribution.

Chester Zoo, one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections, has an active and award winning Education Division, now seeking a Presenter on a temporary contract running to 2nd September 2012.

Our Presenter team are a vital part of enhancing the visitors’ experience and work includes delivering public talks, interpretation and exhibition supervision. School holiday activities may include story telling. Audiences vary from 2 to 500 or more, and there is lots of public interaction requiring a confident and outgoing personality.

The successful candidate will have a Zoo Biology or Conservation related degree, and have good communication skills. They will have experience of Zoo Education and of public speaking or delivering guided tours and will be able to deliver this information to a variety of audiences. A good knowledge of conservation issues and a wide-ranging and in depth knowledge of the natural world is required. They will be able to work as part of a team and individually, be well organised and have the ability to provide excellent customer care.

The successful candidate will ideally have a good knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection, our conservation work and be computer literate (in particular working knowledge of Microsoft Office).

This post is subject to an enhanced CRB check.

Work is 5 days in 7, including Bank Holidays and every weekend. Rate of pay is £7.89 per hour.

SECTION HEAD OF ELEPHANTS

A unique opportunity has arisen at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent whereby we are looking to fill the position of Elephant Section Head.

The job role is to manage one of the world’s most successful captive breeding groups of African elephants. Howletts has bred a total of 21 elephant calves over the past 40 years.

There are 5 people in the elephant team, managing a total of 14 elephants. Their focus is the continued breeding success of the herd; maintaining the highest standards of welfare possible and enriching the lives of the animals in their care.

The successful candidate will ideally have previous elephant management experience and will have had a minimum of 5 years experience within a main stream animal collection. A proven track record of personnel management is also required.

A proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern animal collection is essential, as is a full valid driving licence.

Newquay Zoo is part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust family, comprising Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts, Slapton Ley and two urban nature reserves. Newquay Zoo opened in 1969, has become one of the country's top Zoos, contributing towards ground breaking and innovative conservation programmes. It has also proved itself to be one of the best visitor attractions in the South West.

We currently have two vacancies for voluntary internships for a period of 6-12 months (including a one month probationary period) working with our animal keeping department. Newquay Zoo is open every day and the placements will be full time i.e. a five day working week including some weekends. The main role of the keeping interns will be to attend the husbandry requirements of the animal collection as directed by the Head Keeper in charge.

All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that Newquay zoo cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions. To ensure that interns are provided with valuable experience; a training agreement will be completed and reviewed regularly and a training record will be provided upon completion of the placement.

Objectives of the placement

- To gain experience and understanding of the work of a zoo animal keeping department.
- To apply own personal skills and take ownership of a series of tasks and/or a research
project.
- To reflect on training and experience throughout the placement.
- Anticipated tasks/training provided
- Assisting with daily animal husbandry e.g. feeding, cleaning, enrichment provision,
enclosure modification etc
- Observations of animals and recording of relevant information.
- Training in basic research methods.
- Visitor interaction e.g. answering visitor questions in a polite and sensitive manner.
- Assisting with student supervision at the direction of the head keeper.
- Training in animal-management related computer software.
- Training in all aspects of the company’s code of practise.

Skills Required

- A qualification in an animal science related discipline would be desirable.
- Previous animal-related work experience.
- Good communication skills.
- Adaptable to different working environments.
- Able to work in a team and independently.
- Physically fit for the demands of the post.

Colchester Zoo are looking for an Experienced Sealion and Penguin Trainer to assist in the continued training and husbandry of our Patagonian sealions and Humboldt penguins.

The ideal applicant would have a minimum of three years experience working with sealions and penguins together with a recognised animal management qualification and basic knowledge of marine and fresh water LSS.

As well as the continued training and husbandry of these animals, duties will include daily presentations to the general public and mentoring members of staff ensuring continued development of team members.

You will provide support to the head of section, demonstrating excellent communication and decision making skills, being able to work as part of a team, or singularly when necessary.

A recognised scuba diving qualification and full clean driving license are preferred but not essential.

Do you enjoy a challenge, and are you dedicated to animal welfare? We are looking for a qualified nurse to join our veterinary team at Animals Asia’s bear rescue centre in Tam Dao National Park, Vietnam.


This is an outstanding opportunity for a motivated individual pursuing a career in wildlife care and animal welfare. The Veterinary Nurse will work as part of a small, dedicated veterinary team to ensure the care of Asiatic black bears (moon bears), Malayan sun bears, and domestic animals at our rescue centre. Appointment is full-time, five (5) days a week plus scheduled weekend work. Out of hours work may be required.


Candidates should be highly motivated with plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work. There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members, you will have distinct areas of responsibility. You will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education. Experience in captive wildlife management or rehabilitation work is preferred and senior nursing and administrative experience is beneficial but not essential. You should be comfortable living and working in a remote environment within a small community.


Formal veterinary nursing qualifications are essential for this position. Ideally you should have between three (3) and five (5) years work experience in a large mixed veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation centre, zoo or specialist referral center. However, less experienced candidates with the appropriate personal attributes will be considered. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, and good humour and common sense are required. Applicants must be able to commit for a minimum of two (2) years.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Education Team at Birdworld Bird Park and Gardens, comprising Birdworld, Underwater World and the Jenny Wren Farm, in Farnham, Surrey.

The education team is responsible for the planning and delivery of educational sessions and presentations offered to the general public and to visiting schools and colleges. The team is specifically responsible for the training and husbandry of birds and animals used in presentations and is included in the aviculture team responsible for the husbandry and welfare of bird stock throughout the park. In addition to this the team produces content for park interpretation and species signs.

Required:
• Motivated individual who can work alone and as part of a team
• Confident in public speaking to audiences of all ages
• Experience of keeping and training birds/animals
• Excellent written English
• Full driving license

Preferred:
• Tertiary qualification in a biological science
• Experience with delivering presentations in a captive animal collection
• Experience in the education sector

Highly motivated, experienced and dedicated animal professional is required to work with rescued Asiatic black and sun bears at our Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Tam Dao, Vietnam.

The position is responsible for overseeing teams of local bear keeping staff involved in the daily care and management of the bears housed within the rescue centre. It will also involve working alongside and liaising with the resident Vet team plus our Animal Conditioning Consultant to manage various daily operations. The Bear Manager will report directly to the Vet & Bear Team Manager.


Both formal qualifications and proven practical experience are essential for this position.


Responsibilities
 Co-coordinating various daily operations:
o Animal care and management
o Maintenance and adjustment of existing enrichment programs
o Bear food and stock ordering system
o Maintaining bear behavior records and databases

 Operant conditioning and formal bear training programmes for a variety of medical, behavioural and management requirements.


Requirements
 Formal qualification (ideally a university degree) in zoology, biology, conservation, animal behaviour or related field
 Three to five years work experience in a zoo or similar working environment
 Excellent communication, organisational and practical skills
 Strong management skills and the ability to work in a team or independently
 Patience and willingness to work within a different culture are essential
 Fluent in English language
 Must be able to commit for two years

Appointment is full-time, five days a week with some weekend work applicable.

Penguin Trainer



Ski Dubai is looking for a Penguin Trainer for their exciting new project in United Arab Emirates.

The trainers will participate in the husbandry and training of the penguin collection, including the maintenance of holding area, preparation of diets/penguin feeding and the set-up and maintenance of presentation areas.


Key Tasks:

  • Monitor and perform daily feeding and training of King and Gentoo penguins
  • Monitor penguins during public demonstrations
  • Clean exhibit on a daily basis, including touch-up after presentations
  • Observe penguins for signs of stress or illness
  • Keep records current each day
  • Public speaking for penguin presentations and guest orientation
  • Performs other duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology or related field or equivalent experience
  • 1 year of training experience, preferably with marine mammals
Key Competencies:
  • Previous experience in maintaining living specimens
  • Ability to work well with staff and supervisors
  • Ability to perform well under duress typical of positions dealing with living organisms

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Be able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height
  • Carry materials, transport boxes, buckets, etc. throughout the facility
  • Standing, walking for long periods in a cold environment
