We are looking for an experienced nutritionist with a PhD in animal nutrition or a related field to join our veterinary team and help us to maintain optimal animal health and welfare.  You should have a detailed understanding of zoo animal nutrition and dietary analysis and experience using dietary analysis software and of applied nutritional research.  You will also be required to train HE students in zoo and wild animal nutrition through the provision of formal and informal teaching and to supervise nutrition related research projects, so an interest in teaching would be an advantage.

 

If you are organised, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a collaborative environment, we would be very interested in hearing from you.

About the role…

This position sits within the Welfare, Conservation and Science Division and reports to the Divisional Director. The position is responsible for leading and managing Taronga strategy and operations in wildlife health including Taronga’s preventative healthcare programs, pathology, nutrition, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, as well as some of the operations that support the delivery of guest experience. This role is responsible for the Vet and Vet Nurse teams (across both Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo), Nutrition Department and Pathology, including the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health. The position also leads the safety, maintenance, policy and regulatory requirements in relation to these functions (including those related to biosecurity) across both Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo. It is also responsible for strategy and continuous improvement with regard to these areas and Taronga’s growing remit in Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation.

Full time – 40 hours per week (annualised)

Blackpool zoo is looking for an experienced senior animal Keeper to join our team and assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of a wide range of species currently maintained in our collection.

The successful applicant will be a proven team player with a good knowledge of the zoological industry and an understanding of the requirements needed to maintain and continuously improve the husbandry and welfare of the animal species under their care. You will be required to work with all species on your section in a safe and secure manner and as a senior keeper you will be expected to oversee and supervise other staff members and on occasions manage the section in the absence of the Section head. 

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of five years keeping experience, a full valid driving licence is also essential. Previous experience supervising staff and working with a range of category 1 animals (particularly Big Cats, Elephants and Great Apes) would be desirable.

Salary commensurate with experience. Potential for onsite subsidised single accommodation if required.

Overview of Role

The Selamatkan Yaki conservation programme is developing its field project team to fulfil the aim of reducing the threats to the Sulawesi crested black macaques (Macaca nigra) and their habitat. The Programme Manager (will work directly with the Management Team (Programme Director (PD) Programme Supervisor (PS) and Projects Coordinator (PC)) and Team Leaders (TLs) to support the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all conservation and research activities. Their main responsibilities will include the management of ongoing projects, strategic conservation planning for the programme, leveraging and overseeing funding and co production of scientific output They will be responsible for evaluating and reporting on ongoing population monitoring, education and wildlife trade strategy projects.

The government of Sharjah, Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), United Arab Emirates has been developing the state of the art ‘Sharjah Safari’ (SS) due to open soon. Animal welfare and visitor engagement are a high priority for Sharjah Safari. A master Education Strategy is currently being developed.

We are currently recruiting experienced zoo-educators or science teachers to help set up and train an educator team. There are three positions: 1 Head of Education (HE) and 2 Assistant Heads of Education (AHE). The HE should have a minimum 10 years experience in zoo education/ science teaching and the AHE minimum 5 years.

Job descriptions:

Assistant Head of Education (Public education):

ü  Lead and motivate team of Senior safari guides & Safari guides

ü  Develop and implement Sharjah Safari Educational strategy

ü  Lead long-term training of local Senior safari guides & Safari guides

ü  Initiate and supervise conservation campaigns

ü  Initiate and supervise public events connected to SS animals and SS conservation initiatives (e.g. world giraf day, world hornbill day, world sustainability day etc)

ü  Develop and implement cooperative agreements with local community centres (youth, women, special needs…)

ü  Evaluate effectiveness of campaigns and events together with social scientist

ü  Represent EPAA at relevant national and international conferences

ü  Report to Head of Education

Assistant Head of Education (Formal education):

ü  Lead and motivate team of local Senior guides & Safari guides

ü  Develop and implement Sharjah Safari Educational strategy

ü  Develop and implement lesson plans for primary and secondary schools

ü  Establish contacts with primary and secondary schools in the Emirate of Sharjah

ü  Research primary and seconday school needs in relation to Sharjah Safari in the Emirate of Sharjah

ü  Set up a consultative group of Sharjah teachers to advise Sharjah Safari

ü  Develop and implement cooperative agreements with interested schools in the Emirate of Sharjah

ü  Report to Head of Education


Recruitment conditions:

Assistant Head of Education (Public education):

ü  Degree in Biology or similar with at least 5 years work experience

ü  Keen interest in animals, nature & environment.

ü  Good command of English

ü  Proven management and leadership skills
