Senior Herpetology Keeper - California Science Center Foundation

The Senior Herpetology Keeper establishes and maintains a professional and
positive animal care program for herpetological and other organisms in the
World of Ecology Exhibit. Additionally, they are responsible for the
appearance and operation of all assigned exhibits and support areas,
including providing proper husbandry for the herpetological, mammalian, and
invertebrate collections, acquiring new specimens, maintaining an inventory
of the collection, and monitoring dietary habits of the animals. The
position will also be required to assist with coverage of other living
collections as needed.

*Major Job Responsibilities:*

- Responsible for the care and husbandry of herpetological organisms as
well as other animals such as bats, insects, and rodents. Assist with care
and husbandry of other living collections as needed.
- Responsible for all the animal exhibit maintenance, feeding regimes,
behavioral enrichment, record-keeping, and health assessments.
- Assists World of Ecology project team in advancement and implementation
of exhibit goals by contributing to the design and management of exhibit
development.
- Supports staff and participates in acquiring specimens through
organization of trades/loans/purchases with other zoological institutions,
or as necessary, through collecting trips.
- Assists in implementing Federal, State, and Local agency laws,
regulations, codes, and ordinances, as well as AZA guidelines for eventual
accreditation.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures related to animal
collection husbandry.
- Procures supplies and equipment and makes recommendations for necessary
contractual services.
- Contributes to the mission of the California Science Center by
stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning by creating fun,
memorable experiences for the guests.
- Performs other duties as required.

*Qualifications:*

- Bachelor's degree in Biology or Zoology or related field required OR
equivalent experience.
- 3+ years minimum supervisory experience at a zoological facility highly
desired, preferably at an AZA accredited institution.
- Knowledge of herpetological, mammal, avian, and invertebrate life of
the Sonoran desert and tropical ecosystems highly desirable.
- Experience with husbandry and display of bats strongly preferred.
- Ability to maintain various types of animal exhibits.
- Must posses a strong working knowledge of herpetological, mammal, and
invertebrate husbandry.
- Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations,
codes, and ordinances as applicable to possessing native and exotic wild
animals.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of planning and acquisition of wild
animal specimens highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of the operational characteristics, services, and
activities of a zoological program.
- Knowledge of modern principles and practices of zoo building and design
highly desirable.
- Ability to lift 60 pounds.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends and
holidays.

*Salary:* $45,000 – $50,000 per year plus excellent benefits and 14 holidays
per year.

The Nutritionist is responsible for ensuring the dietary health of all
Living Collections animals as well as maintaining cleanliness and stock of
the various components, including food, in the food preparation kitchen. The
Nutritionist creates and implements food preparation guidelines and
procedures, provides necessary supplements, and designs nutritional
parameters to ensure proper dietary regimes for the Living Collections
organisms.

*Major Job Responsibilities:*

- Prepares all diets for Living Collections aquatic and terrestrial
animals ensuring high quality food with proper nutritional content.
- Maintains inventory and develops purchasing lists of kitchen items and
additional food as needed.
- Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of all food preparation surfaces
and equipment.
- Ensures high quality control on food stock, including maintaining
complete and accurate food storage temperature logs.
- Participates in the daily feeding routines of the Living Collections
animals.
- Assists Living Collections staff in the daily care of the animals.
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies including USDA, FDA,
and AZA with regard to food preparation.
- Trains and supervises Living Collections volunteers assigned to the
food preparation kitchen on proper food preparation and feeding methods.
- Perform other duties as needed.


*Qualifications:*

- BA/BS in Biological Science preferred. Study of animal nutrition a
plus.
- 4+ years experience working in animal care, preferably at an
AZA-accredited facility.
- Knowledge of methods of analysis of nutritional content of various food
items.
- Demonstrated knowledge of USDA, FDA, and AZA standards and policies
with regard to food preparation for captive collections.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Zootrition(R) program
experience a plus.

This position is ideal for someone with veterinary nursing experience who is looking to further their career as a Zoo Veterinary Nurse. This role will be provided with job training in the TWH in the areas of animal husbandry, zoo veterinary nursing and intensive care practices, rehabilitation of Australian native animals, and the care of exotic animals undergoing quarantine for the zoo collection.

• Certificate III in Captive Animal Management (or equivalent), or the ability to enrol in the course

Copenhagen Zoo is looking for two experienced and committed managers for the newly established positions as area managers under the Zoo’s Division II (animals). The positions offer key challenges in one of Denmark’s most renowned attractions with almost 300 employees.

Division II is divided into three geographic areas within the Zoo each with its own area manager.

The job entails handling the daily tasks within the area. Together with 15-20 animal keepers you will be responsible for management of the animal collection within the area. The job responsibilities are numerous but the primary tasks will be to the daily operation of the area which includes:

* Daily animal management
* Exhibit maintenance and cleaning
* Planning duty rosters and securing maximum use of resources
* Planning and managing the education for keeper trainees
* Enrichment and training of animals and organising animal shows
* Animal transports
* Input to collection planning
* Participation in the planning of new enclosures as well as renovation of existing enclosures
* Coordination with other areas and divisions on a daily/weekly basis

Besides from managing the daily operations in your area you also participate in the general planning of the division and contribute to the long-term planning.

You are expected to be experienced within the area of direct management of the daily operations. Your ability to motivate and lead employees on a daily basis through visible leadership will be prioritised as well as the ability to cooperate with other areas of the division and its employees. Emphasis will also be put on the ability to immediately solve and foresee daily problems.

Focus in this position is on leadership and people management. as the animal keepers, coordinators and curators already hold major expertise within practical animal management. Nevertheless a reasonable experience in animal management is expected.

The successful applicant will possess:

Degree in Reproductive Sciences, post-graduate training and/or significant experience in comparative (zoo and wildlife) reproductive biology investigation.

Ability to work productively in a team, develop collaborations with a broad range of government agencies and experience in student and staff supervision

Capable of initiating and managing research projects to be published in peer reviewed journals

Understanding of broad activities of the zoo industry.

postdoctoral fellowships that UBC offers. Details can be found on

We would need to hear from candidates very soon. The Fisheries
Centre deadline will be about 15 October in order to meet the UBC

The fellowships are awarded for a maximum of two years, subject to
review at the end of the first year, and include a stipend of CAD
$46,000 per annum and a maximum research and travel allowance of CAD
$6000 for the tenure of the award. The number of awards varies
between six and 12 per year.

Eligibility
- May be citizens of any country
- Must have obtained their PhD no more than 24 months prior to the
anticipated fellowship start date
- Must not have any previous links with UBC.
- Should have shown outstanding ability in research
- Should wish to pursue postdoctoral research at The University of
British Columbia

Monarto Zoo is part of Zoos SA and is South Australia’s open range zoo
located 70 km from Adelaide’s CBD. It is gaining a well-deserved reputation
as a leader in conservation of endangered species and is in the process of
further enhancing the visitor experience with several projects in
development at both Monarto and Adelaide Zoos. Zoos SA has a progressive
conservation theme based on teamwork and a commitment to achieve the
Society’s Aim and Objectives. Applications are invited from Keepers
experienced in Primate husbandry, particularly Great Apes.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Initially, the successful applicant will be responsible for coordination and
day to day management of the new Chimpanzee exhibit to open in December
2008. This complex comprises of a 3000+ square metre exhibit yard as well
as over 900 cubic metres of internal holding areas including a ‘playroom’
and connecting dens. Once the exhibit is completed you will be responsible
for the daily management of the facility, the animal husbandry and the staff
in consultation with the Assistant Curator and other senior staff. You will
liaise with other institutions and zoo staff, and help develop the protocol
for and undertaking the introduction of chimpanzees, setting up and
maintaining comprehensive training and enrichment programs and in future
breeding programs. Currently other duties will include the management of a
breeding group of Colobus monkeys and a single sex group of Lemurs as well
as public presentations and conducting tours. Future plans include a social
group of baboons with potential of addition of other primates to the
collection.

Experience and Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a minimum of Certificate III in Zoo Keeping (or
equivalent) and be able to demonstrate significant experience in primate
husbandry and introductions. You will need to evidence excellent
observational skills, training (operant conditioning) and enrichment
knowledge and have developed and implemented such programs. Great ape
experience is essential, as is a commitment to Occupational Health and
Safety and an ability to manage complex exhibits.

Excellent communications skills are required due to the complexity of the
exhibit and the introductions. You will need to be organised, able to
maintain accurate records, be self-motivated and able to show leadership and
ability to initiate protocols (safety, husbandry, daily routine) for this
new complex, in consultation with Assistant Curator and other senior staff.

The site is large and vehicles are required to travel on the site. As such a
current car driver’s licence is essential.

Salary:
The grade will be commensurate with experience and salary is in accordance
with the Society’s Staff Agreement 2006.

This post will commence November 2008.

in the beautiful Adelaide Hills of South Australia, Cleland Wildlife Park is

Job Description:

* The Assistant to the Blue Macaw Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Blue Macaw Coordinator in all aspects of management of three species of Blue Macaw (Hyacinth, Lear’s and Spix’s Macaws):
* Aviary maintenance, planting and design.
* Supervision of Blue Macaw Keepers’ daily routine and food preparation.
* Management of reproductive activity, including bird socializations, surveillance camera observations, maintenance of nest structures and monitoring of eggs and chicks.
* Artificial incubation and hand-rearing activities.
* Supervision of the daily distribution of birds’ medications and routine disease monitoring, as well as assistance in veterinary treatments.
* Supervision and assistance in bird transfers.
* Record-keeping, data collection and data encoding.
* Management of equipment, tools and consumption materials within the Blue Macaw Facilities.


Applicants for the position should fulfill the following requirements:

* Must have experience in captive bird husbandry, particularly with psittacines.
* Good understanding of good bird husbandry, nutrition, disease, ecology and behaviour.
* Knowledge of artificial incubation and hand-rearing techniques.
* Experience in resource management and organization.
* Experience with staff management, training and communication.
* Experience with record-keeping and data collection.
* An understanding of the importance of conservation and a scientific work approach.
* Basic computer skills (Word, Excel and internet as a minimum).

Working conditions:

* Contract is for 2 years; initial probationary period is 6 months.

CERCOPAN (Centre for Education, Research and Conservation of Primates and Nature: www.cercopan.org) is concurrently urgently recruiting volunteer veterinarian to start September/October 2008. The voluntary position involves managing the veterinary programme for a busy rehabilitation (over 140 primates of 6 rainforest species) and conservation project in southern Nigeria; duties include management and training of primate care staff, training veterinary nurse, developing and implementing a programme of training newly employed national veterinarian. The positions will also involve monitoring preventative
medicine, following reintroduction and quarantine protocol guidelines and coordinating veterinary activities.

This is a challenging and rewarding position for anyone interested in making a contribution to primate conservation and working in wildlife veterinary medicine.

Requirements: Experience or second degree in wildlife veterinary medicine required - can arrange for specific primate experience in the UK for appropriate applicant. We are not looking for more trainee keepers at this point.

Grade is determined by the job holder’s level of competence, expertise and knowledge, not length of service at the Zoo. Job Description:

Monitor and supervise all aspects of daily work in the Bird Department, ensuring animal welfare and work safety.

Staff training, and if necessary, hands-on work with the birds including feeding/food preparation, handling, veterinary support and hygiene management.

Monitor breeding and daily observation of behavior and health status.

Written documentation and record keeping, evaluating data and producing publications, guidelines, records, proposals, protocols and projects.

Supervise enclosure and building maintenance, as well as monitor construction-work.

Oversee and participate in the artificial incubation and hand-rearing of various bird species.

Organize the daily/weekly routines of personnel of the Bird Department
Participate and represent Africam Safari in collaborative conservation programs.

primates.

Applications are invited for the position of Deputy Head Keeper on the East Section of the Park

The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting in the daily running of the section, and will work closely with the Section Head and staff towards the continued development of the section.

A minimum of 5 years experience with exotic birds and mammals in a zoological environment is essential as is a working knowledge of captive breeding programmes, nutrition and collection planning. Applicants will need to demonstrate good communication skills, be self motivated and able to lead and work as part of a team. Previous supervisory experience, possession of a relevant animal management qualification and a full driving licence are required.

We have an opportunity for a team player with excellent communication and relationship management skills to be part of our Life Sciences team responsible for the integrated operational and animal management functions and activities for the section which includes fascinating animals such as tuatara, kiwis and keas.

As we move forward under a new management structure, we are looking for someone to be a positive role model to others through demonstrated behaviours. In this role you will be responsible for the development of staff through identification of individual and team training needs, development and implementation of appropriate development activities, effective communication, motivation and coaching to ensure maximum potential.

The position is full time (40 hours per week on a 5 day a week roster including Saturdays and Sundays).

a comprehensive knowledge of conservation issues and the role of the modern Zoo

As we move forward under a new management structure, we are exploring an exciting area in animal husbandry and presentation. We have an opportunity for the right person to join our Programmes team.
In this role, you will be required to carry out duties under the supervision of a Team Leader, enabling greater opportunities and involvement with daily husbandry, husbandry training, educational programs, encounters and presentations.

The position is full time (40 hours per week on a 5 day a week roster including Saturdays and Sundays).
