Animals Asia can only accept applications from volunteers trained in either veterinary science / vet nursing or qualified in wild-animal management, as all hands on work with the bears necessitates intensive training.
All veterinary volunteer placements require a commitment of at least three months.
Below is a list of potential duties and tasks for Veterinary Nurse Volunteers at the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre, Tam Dao, Vietnam (VBRC). The duties which the VN volunteers' specifically undertake during their volunteer stint will depend on their background, experience and skill level.

Basic Veterinary Nurse Volunteer Requirements
  • Recognised veterinary nursing qualification.
  • Experience working in veterinary practice in a veterinary nursing role.
Duties
  • Prepare medication for the bears
  • Assist with preparation for bear health checks and surgeries
  • Assist with bear health checks and surgeries
  • Help clear away after bear health checks and surgeries
  • Prepare blood smears and blood for analysis
  • Observe bears waking up from anaesthetics
  • Feed, clean and enrich hospitalised bears
  • Help with small animal work as needed
  • Assist the resident vet nurse with any research tasks as needed
  • Assist the resident vet nurse with database management
  • Assist resident vet nurse with monthly abdomen checks and biannual worming of bears
  • Assist in monthly stock check (if required)
  • Assist with bear data input in digital veterinary records
  • Perform behavioural observations on bears in transport cages, dens and enclosures (if required)
  • Perform any other tasks as directed by the Senior Veterinary Surgeon or resident vet nurse as required.

The Mammal Keeper post will involve the daily care and management of a variety of Mammal species including spectacled bears, bats (Rodrigues, Seba’s & Livingstone), giant anteaters and Red pandas to name a few.

Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and our new Mammal Keeper must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.  The role will also involve promoting the conservation work at Chester Zoo through daily interaction with visitors on site.

The successful candidate will deliver personalised animal experiences to small groups of visitors in both public zoo spaces, behind the scenes and in animal enclosures. These encounters generate revenue for the zoo, and so guests are hosted to the highest standards of customer care and service in accordance with Risk Assessments, Health and Safety regulations and animal welfare.

We are looking for someone with proven experience of working with relevant mammal species and experience of working in a zoo or safari park. The successful candidate will be educated to HND or degree level in Zoo Animal Management/Zoological Science, or have the equivalent experience. Excellent observational skills and a good working knowledge of operant conditioning will be essential. They will also have outstanding communication skills when interacting with visitors to deal with their questions, talks and requests for information.

Competency in the use of computers and basic software packages are required. They will ideally have proven experience with implementing environmental enrichment and experience of working within strict SWP. A full clean driving licence is also required.

Salary is £17,367.09 per annum for a 40 hour week on a rota basis (including some weekends and bank holidays).

Person Specification

With a passion and enthusiasm for fish keeping and aquarium systems, and working knowledge of sea water and brackish systems. With excellent communication and organisational skills, as well as the drive to continually develop the aquarium and animal exhibits at Living Coasts. Experience working with other taxa such as reptiles and birds (particularly penguins) would be an advantage – as you will work on all other sections when required. We are looking for a proactive person with excellent knowledge of animal welfare and animal handling alongside good observation skills and accurate record keeping.

The department runs on rota with one weekend off in three, and we would be looking for a self-disciplined team player with a positive attitude to join the team.

The International Centre for Birds of Prey (ICBP), Newent, Gloucestershire have a rare vacancy for an individual to join the Bird Staff team under the charge of Jemima Parry-Jones MBE.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual who has a good sense of humour coupled with excellent communication skills. A willingness to work hard and be a team player is very important to us. As a member of Bird Staff you must be prepared to liaise and work closely with all centre staff and volunteers.

The position is physically demanding and would best suit someone with a good level of fitness and strength. The majority of work will include cleaning of aviaries, maintenance of all centre infrastructure, painting, gardening and general landscaping duties. This is in addition to the numerous bird of prey management and handling responsibilities, working with the general public and on occasion washing up in the café!

Public speaking skills and the ability to convey a conservation message are important. Experience in handling or training birds of prey is NOT essential as the successful applicant will receive full and progressive training from senior staff. You must show a desire to learn, study and improve your own knowledge and skills often in your own time.

Having good DIY skills and an ability to use basic construction tools is a definite advantage.
There is NO accommodation available at this time and pets including raptors are not allowed on site.
A Full clean driving licence is crucial.

The successful applicant will be required to work through a probationary period of six months with a further six month review.

Salary starts at £15k per year. The position is a five day 40 hour week but hours are subject to change and applicants need to be very flexible in their approach. The WCS-New York Aquarium is seeking a senior wild animal keeper/aquarist to work with elasmobranchs, sea turtles, marine fishes and invertebrates in an upcoming state-of-the-art multispecies exhibit.

This position reports to Animal Department Supervisors and/or the General Curator.
Qualified applicants must have two academic years of full time study in aquarium husbandry, marine biology, or ichthyology, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. A bachelor's degree in the marine sciences or a related field is preferred.
A minimum of three years paid experience in a reputable public display institution is required. The applicant must have experience in aquarium husbandry, elasmobranch training techniques, life support systems operations, water quality management, disease recognition and aquatic & marine animal collecting and transport techniques.
They must be SCUBA certified from a recognized international certifying agency. Must possess open water and aquarium exhibit dive experience. The applicant must be willing to conduct dive operations in aquarium exhibits that contain multiple species of sharks, rays, skates and other marine fish.

Applicants will work regularly with other senior & junior keepers, animal health staff, volunteers and interns. They must possess leadership and organizational skills, be detail-oriented and a self-starter, and be able to work independently, as well as part of a team.
Periodically the person in this position will be required to interact with aquarium visitors, special guests, WCS public relations staff and WCS upper management.

The Living Rainforest is inviting applications for an unpaid voluntary work placement with the Animal Department. Our internship programme has been running successfully for over three years and we are now offering the vacancy to external candidates.

The Trust for Sustainable Living is a registered charity based near Newbury, Berkshire. At our visitor centre, The Living Rainforest, the animal collection is contained within two tropical glasshouses and consists of more than 60 species. These include callitrichids, toucans and turacos, snakes, chelonia, stingrays, dendrobatids, and invertebrates.

Role and Responsibilities:
•        The primary role of the intern will be to participate in the daily husbandry and daily routines of the animal department. This includes feeding animals, maintaining enclosures, daily record keeping and animal health checks.
•        As an intern, you will also help with the daily supervision of existing volunteers and participate in the training of new volunteers and work experience students.
•        You will also receive training and be expected to participate in keeper talks, workshops and keeper experience days which run through holidays and at weekends. 
•        You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the different aspects of the department such as veterinary treatment, enclosure design and record keeping.      
•        You may also be invited to attend both internal and external meetings. This may include ethics committees, BIAZA taxon working groups and staff meetings. 
•        Where suitable, there may also be opportunities for research projects to be undertaken.
Terms of placement:
•        This is a six month voluntary work placement for a registered charity, to begin November 16th 2015.
•        It is preferred that interns are able to work from 9am to 5.30pm five days a week on a rota basis. This will include some weekends and bank holidays as necessary.

•        Preference will be given to applicants with an Animal related qualification or working towards an Animal related qualification, who want to partake in this voluntary work placement in order to seek further industry experience.
•        Some experience within the zoo industry or with exotics would be desirable but not essential.
•        Applicants should be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a willingness to learn new skills.
•        It is recommended that you have your own form of transport to get to and from The Living Rainforest each day as public transport is infrequent in this area.

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Knowsley Safari for two Animal Manager’s to join our Animal Division. The first contract will be a permanent post to undertake sustainable resource support for the current and future living collection. The second, will be a 12 month contract to cover a period of maternity leave that covers the operational aspects of animal husbandry and welfare.

Each role will see you reporting directly to the Head of the Animal Division and overseeing all areas of our animal collections and animal teams: Walkaround, Carnivore/Antelope, Rhinos/Baboons, Stock and Grounds.

The post will involve the daily management of each section, therefore, the successful candidate will have considerable leadership experience of managing one or multiple teams and have great interpersonal and communication skills. We are looking for someone with good animal grounding, preferably with a zoo management background. Both roles will require a passion for animals and the environment.

Responsibilities include:
•        Plan and facilitate continued enclosure design & habitat improvement to the needs and requirements of a variety of species in the collection and enhance sustainable husbandry and animal welfare standards whilst maintaining optimal guest experience.
•        Liaise with contractors in regards with enclosure enhancements, track progress and quality of work and record financial performance within budget constraints.

•        Act as Duty Manager Animals as needed and participating member of the Emergency Team during emergencies as stipulated in the Company’s Emergency Management Team Procedures. May be a member of the Gun team.
