Veterinary Officer - Whipsnade Zoo




Veterinary Officer, based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

The Zoological Society of London is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, experienced zoo and wildlife veterinary surgeon (MRCVS) to join the Veterinary Department as one of its Veterinary Officers responsible for the health and welfare of all animals in ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

It is anticipated that you will be based primarily at Whipsnade Zoo, leading in the care and preventative medicine programmes for ZSL’s large and diverse collections of animals and ZSL’s work in native species reintroductions. Teaching of students, in particular of the veterinary graduates on the MSc in Wild Animal Health, will form a substantial part of your workload. In addition you will participate in research and conservation activities, including support for ZSL’s conservation programmes.

It is essential that you have a proven track record in zoological and wildlife medicine, a good publication, presentation and research project history, with excellent communication and organisation skills. A post-graduate qualification in this field would be beneficial. Working knowledge of the statutory Health & Safety and animal health regulations is essential, with some management experience desirable. You must be a committed team player. Weekend and on-call duties for both collections are shared.

A strong interest in the veterinary management of the larger mammal species, being a committed proponent of animal welfare and having an enthusiasm for continuing professional development are also essential.

Deputy Team Leader, Herpetology

£28,445 p.a. inclusive of allowances, depending on experience

ZSL London Zoo is looking to recruit a Deputy Team Leader (or Team Leader if suitably qualified), for the Herpetology Section at ZSL London Zoo.

You will be familiar with accepted husbandry practises and standards and have a strong interest in breeding programmes and conservation. The successful applicant will be responsible for working closely with the Curator and deputizing where required. You will be actively involved with the day-to-day running and management of the section. Along with good administrative skills and the ability to organise, motivate and manage staff, you will be expected to show a strong commitment to raising the profile of ZSL through your work, especially via linkage with relevant organizations such as BIAZA and EAZA.

Additionally, the following applies:

- Must possess a relevant zoo keeping qualification, or the equivalent of 5 years in caring for reptiles and amphibians in a zoological institution.
- A degree in zoological or biological sciences preferred but not essential.
- Must demonstrate an active interest and expertise in herpetology and management of living collections.
- Possess leadership abilities and have a proven ability to manage and motivate staff.
- Possess good communication skills
- Must have proficiency with computers and animal management programs.
- Ability to direct and offer counsel on departmental programs and activities, and write scientific contributions.
- Extensive experience working with amphibians and venomous reptiles would be preferred.
- Must have a valid, current driver's license.

Aquarist/Reptile Keeper Vacancy


Sealife Adventure Aquarium in Southend - on- Sea is looking to fill the position of Aquarist with reptile keeping duties. As our displays continue to expand and develop we are looking for an aquarist with broad industry experience to support the existing husbandry team.

The successful individual will be hard working, flexible and have a strong work ethic.

Key experience

  • At least 2 year experience in a public aquarium or equivalent experience with aquatic and exotic animal husbandry.
  • Recognised qualification in animal management or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working with Reptiles amphibians and invertebrates.
  • Diving certification preferred – Ideally dive master and above with experience diving in public aquariums.
You will be responsible for the day to day husbandry of the animals in the aquarium and the ongoing development of our displays. You will need to comply with health and safety standards and assist with general maintenance and building upkeep where necessary.

Requirements

Animal Keeper - Smithsonian's National Zoo



Job posting - Smithsonian's National Zoo - pinniped area

There are animal keeper positions posted for the Beaver Valley/American Trail section at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. We are especially interested in adding some great keepers with pinniped experience to our existing team.

This area is currently undergoing a substantial renovation, and reopens to the public in the spring of 2012. The species currently in this area and/or planned include: California sea lions, grey seals, harbor seals, grey wolves, North American river otters, beavers, brown pelicans, hooded merganser ducks, bald eagles, and common ravens.

SENIOR HEAD KEEPER OF MAMMALS

This is a supervisory position involving stock and staff management. Responsible to the Curator of Mammals.

The successful applicant will have a minimum of 5 years experience in the husbandry of a wide range of species as well as in staff management.

Responsibilities to include:

 Monitoring the behaviour and health status of the mammal collection on a daily basis.
 Training and working closely with the team of keepers.
 Performing ‘hands-on’ duties including animal restraint when required.
 Ensuring that Health and Safety protocols are being observed.
 Assisting other departments when carrying out studies pertaining to the mammal collection.
 Writing reports and record keeping.
 Co-ordinating a roster and holiday leave for up to 25 staff.
 Member of zoo firearms crew

Requirements:

 Strong zoo husbandry background (at least five years experience).
 Three years in a supervisory position.
 City and Guilds in Zoo Animal Management, Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals or Diploma in the Management of Zoo Animals and Aquariums (or equivalent qualification) preferred.
 Experience of hand rearing desirable.
 Good leadership and team building skills.
 IT and accurate record keeping skills.
 Ability to work with students and volunteers.
 Willingness to work weekends, and overtime if required.
 Full clean driving licence.


Terms and conditions:

• 38.75 hours per week (5 day week)
• Roster that involves working 2 out of 3 weekends
• 28 days annual leave per annum (including Bank Holidays)

Marwell Wildlife is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources.

We are currently looking to recruit an experienced Keeper to work on a mixed species section. Roles and responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal welfare, health and animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records.

You will be responsible for caring for the animals on your section with minimal supervision from the Section Manager, ensuring animal houses are maintained to specified standards whilst engaging with guests and enhancing their experience at Marwell Wildlife.

Applicants will need to have a minimum of three year’s practical experience of looking after and working with exotic animals in a professional capacity, hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (previously known as the ANCMZA) or equivalent and have a full driving licence valid for the UK.

The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative, display interest and commitment to animal welfare and conservation and must possess strong verbal communication skills.

Dudley Zoological Gardens is a major visitor attraction located within the West Midlands, and has been in existence for nearly 75 years.
The site is unique in that it is home to some of the world’s rarest species, a Norman castle, and the world’s largest single collection of Tecton buildings.
We are now looking to expand and develop the educational aspects of our business, incorporating both the zoological and historical characteristics, and to work with local colleges.

PERSONAL QUALITIES/QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, relevant to this environment, with experience of teaching and supervising staff, and a good level of understanding of the educational system.

  • Be computer literate with a good standard of English.
  • Preferable, although not essential, to have a knowledge of native species, and animal husbandry.
  • Will require strong leadership and organisational skills and a dynamic and passionate approach.
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Required to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays, as necessary.

THE JOB
  • To develop and manage all the education and conservation aspects of the business.
  • To include school visits, outreach activities and on-site workshops.
  • Work with a small team, in both a managerial and participative approach.

The successful applicant will be required to work a flexible 40 hour week, mainly based at Banham Zoo, but this may entail some time at our sister park, Africa Alive!, near Lowestoft.

The main activity will be ensuring the animal records are kept accurately and up to date under the supervision of the Conservation Officer.

You will also assist in the daily administration tasks within the animal management department covering work for all three of our parks.
We are looking for someone who has an eye for detail, is numerate, accurate and well organised.

Prospective candidates should have a high level of computer literacy with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Excel).

Excellent document presentation skills and written English are essential as well as a good standard of education.

Related experience or qualifications would be an advantage.

This is a full time role and salary will be £13,500c. dependent on experience.

The post will require the successful applicant to work with a range of species.

The successful applicant will need to be a highly motivated, hard working individual with at least 1 years experience working in a zoological collection.

Excellent animal husbandry skills are essential.

Applicants must hold a qualification in the Zoo animal management certificate or equivalent and have a full valid driving licence.

This is a full-time and permanent position and will require a start date as soon as is possible.
