Port Lympne Reserve is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team of dedicated black rhino keepers. The ideal candidate will have previous animal husbandry experience gained in a similar main stream zoological collection; preferably working with a rhino species. They will also have an awareness of current conservation issues and a passion for animal welfare.

This is a very physical role and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake all duties on the section such as food preparation, enclosure cleaning, record keeping, enclosure building and maintenance. A full valid driving licence is essential to the role and experience of driving a tractor would be advantageous.

Ideally you will posses excellent animal husbandry skills and have a recognised Zoo Animal Management qualification. You will be a team player who is also confident to work by yourself.
Working 5 days a week out of seven, including weekends and bank holidays, the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours. Single person accommodation may be available.

Colchester Zoo is seeking a highly motivated and knowledgeable individual to join its team of experienced elephant keepers working with 1.3 African elephants.
This is a full time position working 40 hours per week 5 days out of 7 on a rotational basis.

The ideal candidate will have worked for a minimum of two years in a recognised zoological institution and have notable experience of working with elephants in either a free contact or protected contact environment.
It is expected that you will have been awarded the DMZAA or an equivalent qualification. However, due consideration will be given to the individuals own level of zoological experience. You should have a clean UK drivers licence.
Good communication skills, both written and oral are necessary and you will be expected to engage with visitor experiences including the delivery of keeper talks.
The successful applicant will be responsible for but not limited to; cleaning and presentation of exhibits, feeding and general care of the elephants and associated tasks. You will work as part of a team of experienced elephant keepers but also work singularly as required whilst reporting to and taking instructions from the Head of Section.

Background:
The Asian Turtle Program (ATP) of Indo-Myanmar Conservation (IMC) was established in 1998 where it developed from the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in Cuc Phuong National Park. Initially the ATP was established to allow fieldwork, surveys, training and awareness activities to be undertaken for tortoise and freshwater turtles in the Asia region, with a focus on Vietnam. Since 2003 the program has had strong links with the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo/Cleveland Zoological Society's Asia regional program. In 2015 ATP was incorporated into IMC, a UK based NGO.
The aim of ATP is to establish a safe and sustainable future for Asian turtles, and to ensure that no further turtle species become extinct in the region. In Vietnam, we are working closely with the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) of Cuc Phuong National Park to rescue and rehabilitate animals from the trade and to establish and maintain viable population of prioritized and threatened tortoises and fresh-water turtle species.
Scope of works:
The Turtle Captive Officer will support on rescuing new arrivals turtles in the Quarantine area, improvement for animals in TCC under guidance of ATP/IMC. This position also works closely with Training and Rescue Coordinator from ATP/IMC and TCC Manager as well as International Captive Manager with the Cuc Phuong National Park Management Board.
Main responsibilities:
  • Monitor turtles and activities in Quarantine area at TCC
  • Work closely with TCC staffs to implement daily and weekly tasks such as basic treatment and care for turtle in quarantine area
  • Be responsible for managing equipment and supplies for Quarantine area
  • Complete record for animals received from the trade and hatchlings at the center.
  • Support the maintenance of the main population of animals at the TCC, help coordinate development and improvement decisions made by the TCC management and technical advisor team.
  • Assist Training and Rescue Coordinator and TCC Manager to undertake activities and complete report updates.
  • Assist International technical advisors in translation from English to Vietnamese and vice versa
  • Other tasks when required
Desired qualifications
  • University degree in veterinary, forestry, fisheries, biology, or related fields
  • One year or more work experience
  • Passionate about wildlife conservation and animal welfare
  • Competent in computers, words, excel, PowerPoint and Email
  • Good Vietnamese and English skills.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to work with local communities and local government officials.
  • Some veterinary experiences are desirable

Tacugama is looking for a Programme Manager per mid August 2016.

 The Sanctuary:
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 1995 by the Government of Sierra Leone, through the help of conservationist Bala Amarasekaran and the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone to rescue, care for and rehabilitate confiscated pets and orphaned or abandoned wild chimpanzees. It plays a vital role in conserving and protecting chimpanzees in the wild through education, communication and legal enforcement. Tacugama is located 20 minutes from Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, in West Africa.

The main focus of the post is to drive the sustainability of the sanctuary’s work to protect chimpanzees and their habitat in Sierra Leone. The Programme Manager will work closely with the Programme Director and will focus primarily on identifying funding opportunities for ongoing conservation, community outreach and education projects as well as the day to day operational costs of the sanctuary. The Programme Manager will coordinate grant applications, proposal development, donor reporting, volunteer recruitment and liaise with the formal Friends of Tacugama bodies in the UK and Spain. They will deputise for the Programme Director when necessary and work as part of a small management team that also includes the resident veterinarian/administrator.

The programme manager will also be in charge of running the eco-tourism activities at the sanctuary and of planning and carrying out events and fundraisers.
We are looking for an experienced, self-starting person with enthusiasm, tenacity and a positive and creative approach to their work. Previous experience within conservation is desirable and having an understanding of the need for wildlife and habitat protection with a passion for achieving results would help to successfully deliver this role.
The position is based at the sanctuary which is located 30 minutes from Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Student placements on chough reintroduction project in Jersey

An exciting opportunity is available for a student placement at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, based in Jersey, working on the red-billed chough reintroduction project. This project, which began in 2013, is just one of many within Jersey’s “Birds On The Edge” project (www.BirdsontheEdge.org) run in collaboration with the National Trust for Jersey and States of Jersey Department of the Environment.

Two placements are available, starting on 1st September 2016.  Durrell houses a captive collection of choughs at the Wildlife Park, while the reintroduction project is based at an off-site aviary near Sorel Point. Juvenile choughs bred in captivity are being released to the north coast of Jersey. All birds are intensively monitored and managed post-release. The student placement will assist the Field Manager in carrying out these activities. Students will spend 6 months with the project from September to March or March to September, with the remaining 6 months spent working with Durrell’s Bird Department.

Howletts Wild Animal Park and Port Lympne Reserve work in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation; a charity committed to conservation and the reintroduction of captive bred species back into their natural habitats.

A new role has been developed in conjunction with the Education and Fundraising departments and we are looking for volunteers at both Howletts and Port Lympne parks.

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals to help us enhance visitor experience and raise awareness of the work being done at the parks and by The Aspinall Foundation. Successful candidates will act as information hotspots at busy points throughout the parks and engage visitors through short talks and activities. You will be provided with up-to-date information each day, which will enable you to increase visitor knowledge and enrich their visit.
Full training and supervision will also be given.

We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic, approachable and friendly with a genuine interest in conservation and can confidently represent the parks and The Aspinall Foundation. Applicants should be available to volunteer 1 – 5 days per week between 9am and 5pm. You will also need to be available to attend an induction sessions on either the 11th or 12th June.

As we are a Registered Charity, funded entirely by visitor fees and donations, we regret we are unable to offer any wages or salary for the placement.  We will provide a uniform and discount at the parks food outlets for the days that you attend work. No other financial benefits are offered.   Candidates will need to have the ability to financially support themselves for the duration of their volunteer placement. About You

About the Role
You will be responsible for maintaining and developing displays and exhibits - promoting public education and awareness in relation to conservation and delivering a memorable and entertaining experience to visitors. Experience in animal husbandry is essential. This is a hands on role and skills in pipework and maintenance of life support systems and pumps are beneficial. It is desirable, but not essential, that you are qualified to PADI Divemaster or equivalent and hold a valid HSE dive medical.  Dive specific training can be undertaken if not already at this level.

This post is full time, with weekend shifts allocated on a rota basis.

Occupational Summary
                                                                                                                                                             The Lead Aquarist oversees and participates in the husbandry of the aquatic specimens, including the maintenance and re-stocking of their exhibits. Duties include maintaining closed aquatic systems, preventive health care and the identification of disease; understanding all areas of the animal care facility with the ability to cover all of the aquatic animal areas. They will demonstrates a high level of self-direction.  Work also involves initiating and implementing specific husbandry related projects that may be conducted in the museum or in the field.  Must have working knowledge of Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) aquatic care standards and requirements. Must have working knowledge of US Fish and Wildlife/Federal Permit Requirements for Endangered Green Sea Turtles.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
•        Participates in assigned husbandry duties, i.e. maintenance of assigned exhibits, diet preparation, feeding, monitoring animal health and maintenance of backup areas
•        Routinely dive exhibits to provide proper animal care and ensure exhibit quality is maintained
•        Maintains appropriate records
•        Involved in breeding and/or culture of animals or food sources in our collection
•        Initiates and/or assists in the upgrade of exhibits and maintains exhibit stock through ordering
•        Performs work in a manner that fosters the museum’s mission and reflects its core values and service standards
•        Follows AZA and US Fish and Wildlife/Federal permit husbandry guidelines for all aspects of animal care
•        Works with the Director of Exhibits and Visitor Experience with relation to the exhibit components of the Ocean exhibit and the Rivers and Streams exhibit.
•        Works with the Collections Manager with regard to the live animal collections software/database and record keeping.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•        Knowledge and experience with AZA aquatic care standards
•        Knowledge of US Fish and Wildlife/Federal Permit requirements for Endangered Green Sea Turtles
•        Knowledge of Animal Care software such as ZIMS, Tracks, or Animal Care.
•        Published an aquarium related technical or scientific paper
•        Completed at least one project aimed at bettering the status of the living collection and produced a written report on same
•        Significant participation in at least one major exhibit change or upgrade
•        Demonstrated ability to engage in public speaking, such as educational programs, members programs, etc.

Educational/Experience Requirements
•        Bachelor’s degree in biology, ichthyology, or zoology: or the equivalent to a degree in experience in a related field
•         Minimum of five years’ experience in a related field

License or Certification Required
•        SCUBA certification
•        Driver’s License

Supervises
•        Part time animal care/husbandry specialists
•        Animal care/husbandry interns
•        Animal care/husbandry volunteers

Working Conditions
•        Normal office environment
•        Frequent wet and slippery surroundings
•        Frequent hot or cold settings
•        Frequent exposure to fumes, smoke, odors, etc.

Physical Demands
•        Able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height
•        Transporting organisms, materials, buckets, etc. throughout the museum premises
•        Able to physically access the uniquely challenging exhibit and service areas to which assigned
•        Some climbing ladders
•        Working in cramped and awkward spaces requiring crouching or crawling

Time Commitments:
•        Weekly schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, but hours can vary
•        Willingness to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of the job
•        Possible nights and weekends
•        Must be available for special events and training

22.2 hours per week for 40 weeks per year
£18,840 - £22,508 pro rata (dependent upon qualifications)

Due to growth in learner numbers, the college is seeking to expand the current instructor team. The post holder will undertake practical instruction and assessment of groups of students and other trainees as required.
Candidates should be educated to at least level 3 in a relevant qualification e.g. Animal Management.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate significant professional experience working with a range of animals as well as a real passion and enthusiasm for animals and helping all learners to reach their maximum potential. The post holder will hold an appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to attain one.

This post is to be based at the Sparsholt campus.
