Scotland’s National Aquarium


Deep Sea World is a market leader visitor attraction and Scotland’s gem based in North Queensferry. Our Aquarium hosts the largest temperate marine display in the UK through its underwater walkthrough tunnel. Other displays include tropical marine, freshwater, reptiles, amphibians and marine mammals.

Aquarist

Salary: £12,646.40 - £13,300 depending on experience

The responsibility of the Aquarist/Diver will be varied, challenging, but extremely rewarding. A hands on approach is required to ensure you achieve the highest standard of animal care and husbandry.

You will be responsible for maintaining and developing all Deep Sea World’s displays and exhibits, along with promoting public education and awareness in relation to conservation of biodiversity.

In addition to this you will also maintain, clean, tidy and safe standards of all plant rooms; tool rooms, laboratories and quarantine facilities.

The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors as you will be responsible for promoting and participating in public presentations and education sessions, as well as conversing with our visitors whilst carrying out your daily duties around the aquarium.

The role requires you to take members of the public into our main tank (as part of our dive experience package), and to carry out shows and maintenance dives. It is desirable, but not essential, that you are qualified to PADI Divemaster or equivalent and hold an in date dive medical. Dive specific training can be undertaken if not already at this level.

This is a full time post working on a rota’d basis which includes regular weekends and bank holidays as well as being on call for out of hour’s emergencies.

The Native Fauna team comprises of a dedicated bird section, native mammal section and reptile section which highlight the important role that native species play with the organisation. This position is to be based at Adelaide Zoo.

At present the team has a need for a Senior Bird keeper, with extensive bird husbandry skills, people management, and staff development. Experience working within other recognized Zoological institutions is essential, along with involvement with captive breeding programs. The applicant will play a vital role in development of this section, providing training to staff, assisting with collection development, and exhibit design. The incumbent must be motivated, and show a desire to encourage this section to strive for institutional goals and objectives. A major focus will be placed on public free-flight presentation, and current initiatives are focused on a revamp of current presentation. The team supports various conservation programs, in-situ and ex-situ, and there is a potential for all staff to become involved in field work to support these programmes. Experience working in the field will be advantageous, as well as recovery team involvement.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily operations, including managing numerous aspects of staffing and animal transactions, as well as the husbandry aspects of the collection within the bird section. At times there is a requirement for the incumbent to supervise in absences of the Team Leader and other Senior keepers within the Native Fauna team. The applicant must also have the ability to work well in a team, have a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, and have excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver public presentations. As the Senior is required to assist and advise their team in the progression of their Certificate III, achievement of certificate III is essential and it will be required for the post holder, as a line manager, to work towards certificate IV.

 A unique opportunity has arisen at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent whereby we are looking to fill the position of Elephant Section Head.




The job role is to manage one of the world’s most successful captive breeding groups of African elephants. Howletts has bred a total of 21 elephant calves over the past 40 years.



There are 5 people in the elephant team, managing a total of 14 elephants. Their focus is the continued breeding success of the herd; maintaining the highest standards of welfare possible and enriching the lives of the animals in their care.



The successful candidate will ideally have previous elephant management experience and will have had a minimum of 5 years experience within a main stream animal collection. A proven track record of personnel management is also required.



A proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern animal collection is essential, as is a full valid driving licence.

(Maternity Cover – 6 Month Contract)



Chester Zoo, one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections, has an active and award winning Education Division, is now seeking a Presenter on a 6-month contract to cover maternity leave, commencing in June 2012.



Our Presenter team are a vital part of enhancing the visitors’ experience and work includes developing and delivering public talks, interpretation and exhibition supervision. Audiences vary from 2 to 500 or more, and there is lots of public interaction requiring a confident and outgoing personality.



The successful candidate will have a Zoo Biology or Conservation related degree, and have good communication skills. They will have experience of Zoo Education and of public speaking or delivering guided tours and will be able to deliver this information to a variety of audiences. A good knowledge of conservation issues and a wide-ranging and in depth knowledge of the natural world is required. They will be able to work as part of a team and individually, be well organised and have the ability to provide excellent customer care.



The successful candidate will ideally have a good knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection, our conservation work and be computer literate (in particular working knowledge of Microsoft Office).

Work is 5 days in 7, including Bank Holidays and every other weekend. Rate of pay is £9.81 per hour.

Chester Zoo, one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections, has an active and award winning Education Division and this includes educational outreach to schools and community groups within its catchments.

The work of the Safari Ranger involves visiting local schools (including Special Schools) to deliver exciting and engaging workshop sessions that will act as stand-alone units of work, or as pre-visit primers in preparation for students’ visits to the zoo. The post-holder will be expected to host some zoo visits of schools requesting a follow-up session. The post-holder will also be required to work in partnership with teachers to develop units of work that meet curriculum requirements.

Our approach to formal education is highly participatory so candidates will be expected to be outgoing and enthusiastic in their teaching style. In the school holidays the post-holder is required to extend the Safari Ranger service to selected community groups.

Applicants should have a Zoo Biology/Conservation-related degree, a good knowledge of the zoo’s animal collection and conservation work and a proven ability to communicate with a wide audience. A formal teaching qualification or equivalent experience in effective and sensitive communication within the context of working with children is essential. The post holder is required to plan visits, take bookings and deal with enquiries by phone and email.

The 35 hour week will run Monday to Friday. Holidays are to be taken to coincide with school holidays. The rate of pay for this post is £9.71 per hour. Please note that as a charitable trust, our salary scale is not based on LEA scales.

The post-holder will hold a clean driving license and be able to drive themselves to and from schools and transport teaching aids including artifacts and live animals. A zoo vehicle will be provided. This vehicle is to be left overnight and at weekends in the zoo.

Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent is recruiting for the position of Primate Keeper.

We are looking for someone with a significant
experience working as a primate keeper.

Applicants must have a proven track record in a similar position at a recognised zoological collection. They must posses good all round animal husbandry skills and be enthusiastic in contributing to the enrichment of the primate species around the park.

A proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern animal collection is essential, as is a full clean driving licence.

Howletts is a world class wildlife park run by the international conservation charity The Aspinall Foundation, and works to support a number of overseas conservation projects including the Java Primate Project in Indonesia. We are home to a collection of around 160 rare and endangered primates, including Javan gibbons, Dusky langurs, Sulawesi macaques, Pied tamarins and Gelada baboons to name a few.

We have recently built a rescue and rehabilitation centre in Java where rare Indonesian primates can be confiscated and taken care of; with a view to either returning them back to the wild or providing them with a better quality of life. Ultimately, captive bred animals may also relocate to the centre, providing offspring that could boost the wild population when reintroduction conditions are right.

Lakes Aquarium is a small visitor attraction on the southern shore of Lake Windermere in the picturesque tourist area of the Lake District. The Role
  • To support the Department Head in the running of a busy herpetological department, managing the animal collection and contributing to the Trust’s conservation projects as required.
  • To manage and motivate departmental staff and aid them in their professional development.
  • To teach visiting students practical aspects of animal management, instigate research projects and support others conducting research.
  • To ensure that the husbandry of the collection conforms to our high standards of animal welfare and ethical guidelines.
  • To manage the collection and departmental resources during the absence of the Department Head.

Specification
  • Strong background in the captive husbandry of herpetological species with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working within zoological collections a necessity.
  • Practical experience of reptile and/or amphibian conservation projects desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field required.
  • Wide knowledge of biology, taxonomy, ecology and the captive requirements of the reptile and amphibian species for which the post is responsible.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English) and experience of delivering presentations.
  • Good organisational ability and project management skills desirable.
  • A high level of health and fitness as aspects of the job are physically demanding and a willingness to travel.
