Postdoc opportunity - Project Seahorse marine conservation group

Dear friends,

Can you please think of anybody who might be interested in a postdoc
opportunity at UBC with our Project Seahorse marine conservation
group ? We are open to people with either science or social science
interests.

We would nominate a suitable person for the prestigious KIllam
postdoctoral fellowships that UBC offers. Details can be found on

We would need to hear from candidates very soon. The Fisheries
Centre deadline will be about 15 October in order to meet the UBC
deadline of 1 November 2008. Applicants will hear by April the
following year.

The fellowships are awarded for a maximum of two years, subject to
review at the end of the first year, and include a stipend of CAD
$46,000 per annum and a maximum research and travel allowance of CAD
$6000 for the tenure of the award. The number of awards varies
between six and 12 per year.

Eligibility
- May be citizens of any country
- Must have obtained their PhD no more than 24 months prior to the
anticipated fellowship start date
- Must not have any previous links with UBC.
- Should have shown outstanding ability in research
- Should wish to pursue postdoctoral research at The University of
British Columbia

Preference will be given to applicants who have not already held a
postdoctoral award or fellowship.

Fellowships are tenable only at UBC, and fellows are expected to make
the UBC campus their base. Fellowships from this next cycle may not
begin earlier than May 1, 2009 or later than January 2, 2010. Most
fellowships commence between July and October.

Monarto Zoo is part of Zoos SA and is South Australia’s open range zoo
located 70 km from Adelaide’s CBD. It is gaining a well-deserved reputation
as a leader in conservation of endangered species and is in the process of
further enhancing the visitor experience with several projects in
development at both Monarto and Adelaide Zoos. Zoos SA has a progressive
conservation theme based on teamwork and a commitment to achieve the
Society’s Aim and Objectives. Applications are invited from Keepers
experienced in Primate husbandry, particularly Great Apes.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Initially, the successful applicant will be responsible for coordination and
day to day management of the new Chimpanzee exhibit to open in December
2008. This complex comprises of a 3000+ square metre exhibit yard as well
as over 900 cubic metres of internal holding areas including a ‘playroom’
and connecting dens. Once the exhibit is completed you will be responsible
for the daily management of the facility, the animal husbandry and the staff
in consultation with the Assistant Curator and other senior staff. You will
liaise with other institutions and zoo staff, and help develop the protocol
for and undertaking the introduction of chimpanzees, setting up and
maintaining comprehensive training and enrichment programs and in future
breeding programs. Currently other duties will include the management of a
breeding group of Colobus monkeys and a single sex group of Lemurs as well
as public presentations and conducting tours. Future plans include a social
group of baboons with potential of addition of other primates to the
collection.

Experience and Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a minimum of Certificate III in Zoo Keeping (or
equivalent) and be able to demonstrate significant experience in primate
husbandry and introductions. You will need to evidence excellent
observational skills, training (operant conditioning) and enrichment
knowledge and have developed and implemented such programs. Great ape
experience is essential, as is a commitment to Occupational Health and
Safety and an ability to manage complex exhibits.

Excellent communications skills are required due to the complexity of the
exhibit and the introductions. You will need to be organised, able to
maintain accurate records, be self-motivated and able to show leadership and
ability to initiate protocols (safety, husbandry, daily routine) for this
new complex, in consultation with Assistant Curator and other senior staff.

The site is large and vehicles are required to travel on the site. As such a
current car driver’s licence is essential.

Salary:
The grade will be commensurate with experience and salary is in accordance
with the Society’s Staff Agreement 2006.

This post will commence November 2008.

Job Description:

* The Assistant to the Blue Macaw Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Blue Macaw Coordinator in all aspects of management of three species of Blue Macaw (Hyacinth, Lear’s and Spix’s Macaws):
* Aviary maintenance, planting and design.
* Supervision of Blue Macaw Keepers’ daily routine and food preparation.
* Management of reproductive activity, including bird socializations, surveillance camera observations, maintenance of nest structures and monitoring of eggs and chicks.
* Artificial incubation and hand-rearing activities.
* Supervision of the daily distribution of birds’ medications and routine disease monitoring, as well as assistance in veterinary treatments.
* Supervision and assistance in bird transfers.
* Record-keeping, data collection and data encoding.
* Management of equipment, tools and consumption materials within the Blue Macaw Facilities.


Applicants for the position should fulfill the following requirements:

* Must have experience in captive bird husbandry, particularly with psittacines.
* Good understanding of good bird husbandry, nutrition, disease, ecology and behaviour.
* Knowledge of artificial incubation and hand-rearing techniques.
* Experience in resource management and organization.
* Experience with staff management, training and communication.
* Experience with record-keeping and data collection.
* An understanding of the importance of conservation and a scientific work approach.

Working conditions:

* Contract is for 2 years; initial probationary period is 6 months.

CERCOPAN (Centre for Education, Research and Conservation of Primates and Nature: www.cercopan.org) is concurrently urgently recruiting volunteer veterinarian to start September/October 2008. The voluntary position involves managing the veterinary programme for a busy rehabilitation (over 140 primates of 6 rainforest species) and conservation project in southern Nigeria; duties include management and training of primate care staff, training veterinary nurse, developing and implementing a programme of training newly employed national veterinarian. The positions will also involve monitoring preventative
medicine, following reintroduction and quarantine protocol guidelines and coordinating veterinary activities.

This is a challenging and rewarding position for anyone interested in making a contribution to primate conservation and working in wildlife veterinary medicine.

Requirements: Experience or second degree in wildlife veterinary medicine required - can arrange for specific primate experience in the UK for appropriate applicant. We need experienced primate keepers to join our primate sections caring for colobus, guenons, langurs, lemurs, spider monkeys, tamarins, marmosets, howler monkeys, woolly monkeys and others. It is ideal if you have already achieved an animal-related qualification, but it is more important to have “hands on” experience of caring for primates. We are not looking for more trainee keepers at this point.

Pay ranges from £293 pw (£15,236 pa) for a Keeper up to £323 pw (£16,796 pa) for a Senior Keeper. Grade is determined by the job holder’s level of competence, expertise and knowledge, not length of service at the Zoo. We also offer 33 days holiday, uniform, 5% pension contribution and the possibility of on-site accommodation.

Minimum required skills for the position:

Job Description:

Monitor and supervise all aspects of daily work in the Bird Department, ensuring animal welfare and work safety.

Report to the General Curator, on a regular basis and on request.

Staff training, and if necessary, hands-on work with the birds including feeding/food preparation, handling, veterinary support and hygiene management.

Monitor breeding and daily observation of behavior and health status.

Written documentation and record keeping, evaluating data and producing publications, guidelines, records, proposals, protocols and projects.

Supervise enclosure and building maintenance, as well as monitor construction-work.

Oversee and participate in the artificial incubation and hand-rearing of various bird species.

Organize the daily/weekly routines of personnel of the Bird Department
Participate and represent Africam Safari in collaborative conservation programs.

Section Head of Small Primates - Howletts Wild Animal Park

Howletts Wild Animal Park, situated in South Kent is recruiting for a
head primate keeper to manage their unique collection of endangered
primates.

Applicants must have a proven track record in a similar position at a
recognised zoological collection. Excellent animal husbandry skills,
team leadership and interpersonal skills, good written and oral
communications skills, the ability to motivate and develop others and
a valid driving licence are essential requirements for this position.

We are looking for a highly organised, self motivated individual with
a proactive approach who has an understanding of the role of the
modern animal collection and can plan for the future development of
the section.

You will be responsible for managing all aspects of the small primate
section including recruitment, disciplinary issues, development of
animal personnel, conducting performance appraisals, risk assessments
and managing annual budgets.

Previous experience in a similarly placed position is essential in
order to be considered for this post.

Salary up to £20,500 depending on experience.

A 3 bedroom house adjacent to the Park is available if required.

This is a part time position working 10 hours per week

Bristol Zoo Gardens’ Education section requires an Animal Care Technician to provide high standards of husbandry and welfare for its collection which is used as a teaching resource for Bristol Zoo’s education sessions. The successful applicant must have animal care knowledge and experience including exotic animals.
