Twycross Zoo is currently going through an exciting period of change as the zoo develops and we are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

The elephants section comprises a herd of 5 Asian elephants, which includes two mother/daughter pairings, ranging in age from 12 months to 30 years old. A new grass paddock and raised visitor
walkway with viewing area was completed last summer to complement the large sand paddock and pool.

Key Responsibilities
· A hands-on role, working on the section
· Supervising all areas of daily animal husbandry
· Developing, supervising and training staff
· Taking administrative responsibility, alongside other senior staff within the Large Mammals section

Key Skills & Requirements
· High performing and enthusiastic
· Proven track record of working with elephants in a protected contact system
· Good experience of elephant foot care
· Minimum of 8 years’ experience preferred
· Able to demonstrate good working knowledge of the natural history and management of elephants
· Good team worker with positive outlook
· Excellent communication skills
· Committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff
· An animal related qualification such as ANCMZA or DZMAA

This is a full time position, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is dependant on experience and is paid monthly. We provide uniform, 31 days holiday, 5% employer’s pension

Twycross Zoo is at a very exciting stage of development with the first phase of a 20 year masterplan already underway. The plan will see the zoo developing new habitats for a refreshed animal collection starting with Giraffe Savannah and Gibbon Forest in 2015.
We currently have a vacancy for a Research & Conservation Coordinator in our Life Sciences area who will be responsible for developing the research and conservation remit of the Zoo.

Key Responsibilities:
· Assist the Director of Life Sciences to develop the research and conservation remit of the zoo, liaising with researchers and universities
· Carry out all administration and student management relating to research and conservation
· Liaise with conservation organisations in accordance with the Conservation Strategy
· Assist the Director of Life Sciences in the development of Memoranda of Understanding with key institutions and the implementation of such agreements
· Manage the zoo’s library
· Promote, and continue to develop, the public engagement activities pertaining to research and conservation and generate items for internal and external communication of science

Key Skills & Requirements:
· Educated to MSc level in an animal-science related subject
· Good computer skills and proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint
· Ideally previous experience in a similar role
· Excellent communication and organisational skills
· Ability to work to a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality
· A good understanding of the role of the modern zoo

The role is permanent, full-time (5 days out of 7), salary is paid monthly with 31 days holiday per annum.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead a horticultural team; the successful applicant will be involved in the landscaping, planting and maintenance of 125 acres of award winning gardens and animal enclosures. We are increasingly developing our plant conservation work and the successful applicant would take an active role in that.

  • The successful applicant will supervise and develop staff and manage the operations and resources of the Horticulture and Botany section efficiently to maintain the highest standards of horticultural activities. They will work with the Curator in developing specific zoo projects and plant conservation work and manage their operational development and delivery.
  • The successful applicant will have a minimum of an NVQ 3 in Horticulture or RHS General. They will have a PA1 and PA6 spraying certificate and a full driving licence. They will have proven practical experience and supervisory level experience.
  • The successful applicant will have an excellent understanding of a wide range of horticultural skills and practices including; propagation, growing from seed to planting out, care and cultivation of plants and knowledge of soil science.
  • They will have a good understanding of Integrated Pest Management and an ability to recognise pests, diseases and weeds and treat them by either biological or chemical means. They will have excellent plant knowledge, both hardy and tropical, and a good understanding of botany.
  • The successful candidate will have plant conservation experience and a good understanding of environmental issues, with experience in creating plant exhibits. They will be able to manage a team and have good communication and organisational skills.
  • The successful candidate will ideally have an understanding of plant record databases and labelling systems.

Salary is £30,227 per annum for a 40 hour week.

About the role

As our Zoo Manager you will be responsible for leading and motivating a team in delivering excellent standards of safety, guest care and animal welfare at this unique Zoological collection.  In addition you will partner with trusts such as Ape Action Africa, World Land Trust and Surrey Wildlife Trust as we build on the fantastic achievements we have had with our own conservation fund – Chessington Conservation Trust.

You will lead the Zoo Team to deliver a consistently excellent standard of safety, Guest Service and Animal welfare whilst continually enhance and promote the Zoo both internally and externally, assisting in the planning to develop the Zoo in line with growth plans for the Resort, utilising the available funds to maximum effect. You will advise on revenue flows from Zoo based activities to maximise the Park’s potential yield whilst promoting Education, Conservation and Research through Zoo based activities and resources.

Based at Chessington World of Adventures, you will work 5 days per week, however, hours are flexible and will include weekends and bank holidays.

About you

You will be an engaging and supportive leader with a solid background in the Zoo environment in a managerial capacity. You will have previous experience in financial planning and project leadership. Sound knowledge of DEFRA, EAZA and Zoo licensing are essential. The successful candidate will have a wide range of knowledge and experience with livestock ranging from domestic and companion animals to the more unusual animals of varying species. A full British driving licence is also required due to the nature of the work involved and experience of
driving various vehicles and farm machinery would be advantageous.
As the Animal Zone is an important teaching resource to South Staffordshire College as well as a licenced Zoo, degree level education would be desirable but not essential from the successful candidate along with any other animal related qualifications.
The successful candidate will have a flexible approach as there will be a requirement to work weekends and holiday periods.

We are looking for a full time Veterinary Nurse that will assist in the delivery of  veterinary services at Marwell Wildlife.

Marwell has a well-equipped veterinary hospital including remote-chemical immobilisation and field anaesthesia equipment, digital radiography, portable ultrasound, rigid and flexible endoscopy and laboratory facilities.

This post will focus principally on supporting the zoo veterinarians in delivering the preventative health care programme, whilst providing day-to-day care for the animals in the collection. In addition the candidate will facilitate animal transfers, coordinate student placements and assist with the management of the veterinary practice at Marwell.

Experience and knowledge of zoological or wildlife veterinary nursing would be an advantage. This includes zoo animal nursing, zoo anaesthetic monitoring, and an understanding of the role of the veterinary service in the modern zoological collection. Candidates should have experience of maintaining a modern veterinary hospital. We operate to the highest standards of welfare and the veterinary nurse role will support this.

Applicants must be a Registered Veterinary Nurse, hold a minimum of two years veterinary nursing experience and a full drivers licence valid for the UK. Candidates with higher qualifications in zoo nursing or applicable disciplines are preferred.

Colchester Zoo is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual, preferably with a background in animal training, to join its dedicated team of staff. You will be working in a team of four and reporting directly to the Head of Section.

The section is responsible for but not limited to the daily management of exhibits, animal husbandry and the presentation of public displays. Having prior experience working with penguins and sealions and possessing a competent level of understanding of LSS would be advantageous.

The ideal applicant will have a proven work record in a recognised zoological institution and have excellent communication and presentation skills.

It is expected that you will have been awarded the DMZAA or equivalent. However, due consideration will be given to the individual's own level of zoological experience.

This is a full time position working 40 hours per week and applicants are expected to work to a flexible rota as necessary to include weekends and Public holidays.

Job Description : Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Team Manager on the Giraffe section. The post will involve the assisting the Team Manager in the daily management of the Giraffe section along with mentoring, training and developing the team under the direction of the Team Manager. The successful candidate will provide extensive knowledge and expertise in animal husbandry and management with a focus on hoofstock, and be able to develop and implement new ideas for improving husbandry, building strong working relationships with other departments to ensure standards are met. Candidates will have a higher education qualification in a Zoological related science (min HND) or equivalent experience.

The successful candidate will have leadership qualities, experience of supervising a team and be able to organise and prioritise tasks in a dynamic environment. A good understanding of risk assessments and SWP is required to ensure all staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures. This role will involve representing Chester Zoo and the Giraffe team for media interviews and internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas. Therefore, excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Applicants should have a full driving licence and be prepared to work weekends and Bank Holidays in a roster system.

Salary is £24,017 per annum for a 40 hour week.
