Technical Assistant to the Director General
The Director General of the North of England Zoological Society (Chester Zoo) is seeking a Technical Assistant to provide technical support in his duties to help achieve the organisation’s mission and business goals.
This role involves:
• Maintaining, analysing and annually publishing studbooks.
• Developing an overseas field conservation project for the Ecuadorian amazon parrot.
• Setting up and maintaining a Black rhinoceros husbandry website.
• Organising an annual international expedition for 20+ people and equipment, including: visas, flights, accommodation, risk assessments and liaison with overseas partners, etc. Also includes organising of the Directorate’s travel arrangements.
• Research for and assist with producing scientific papers, reports, speeches and presentations - tailored to the needs of specific audience groups. Delivery of presentations on occasion.
• Travel and field work: several short trips overseas and/or within the UK may be required.
Candidates should have completed a Masters degree in conservation science or a closely related subject, have excellent subject background knowledge of zoo breeding programmes and conservation topics. Experience of organising overseas travel is essential, with experience of organising international expeditions being advantageous.
The candidate should have experience from previous employment in zoo or field conservation and preferably both. The candidate should be highly organised and have proven skills in researching and summarising information and drafting scientific reports or papers. He or she should have excellent English writing skills and IT skills. Preferred additional skills and experience include: field travel experience, small population biology and website maintenance.
This is a full-time position (35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9am to 5pm), based at Chester Zoo. The salary is £22,185 per annum.
