WZ Senior animal keeper - elephants (full-time / permanent)

Salary: £25,841 (Inclusive of Weekend Enhancement)

  
Role Profile:

An exciting opportunity has arisen at ZSL and we are looking to recruit a senior animal keeper on the elephant section at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. The role will be supporting the Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader, with the day to day operational running of the department and running the department in their absence. The successful candidate will manage staff, supervise volunteers and will work closely with all members of staff to ensure best animal care and practice is adhered to, helping to achieve ZSL’s strategic aims. The successful candidate will have prior experience of working with Elephants in a zoological environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Observing and recording the behaviour, health and security of the animals.
  • Working closely with the Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader in a progressive elephant management section, ensuring best practice throughout.
  • A willingness to learn and promote new skills and techniques in elephant care.
  • Mentoring, training, enthusing junior members of a team and problem solving on the job.
  • Maintaining high standards of hygiene, equipment care and house-keeping as routine part of daily duties
  • Ensuring that health, safety and emergency procedures are followed at all times as instructed. Ensuring that personal safety is a priority.
  • Supporting broader ZSL lead events such as late evenings, specialist functions and animal encounters.


The successful candidate will:

  • Have a high level of ability working with elephants in different elephant management programs.
  • Have an ability to adapt and evolve Elephant management as required.
  • Have strong attention to detail and the ability to clearly convey instruction.
  • Support agreed management decisions and support communicating this to staff.
  • Apply appropriate judgement when discussing confidential or commercially sensitive information.
  • Be able to use Microsoft software including Outlook, Excel, Word and internet based programmes.
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate to colleagues of all levels regardless of their position.
  • A full manual driving license is also required.


Please note: This is a full-time, permanent position based at Whipsnade Zoo. Flexible working is required for this position which will include working 2 in 3 weekends, bank holidays and providing assistance out of hours if required.
