Cornish Seal Sanctuary

The SEA LIFE TRUST Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a charity that rescues and rehabilitates grey seal pups from around the Cornish coastline.

Each season, the Sanctuary rehabilitates over 70 seal pups that have been rescued for various reasons, from malnourishment to being separated from their mum.

The Sanctuary also provides a permanent home to animals that need special care from our team of marine animal experts.

 The Role

Come and join our amazing team of marine animal experts as an Animal Care Assistant at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a leading seal rehabilitation centre in Europe, and has the largest group of resident pinnipeds in the UK. As an international facility with more than 50 years of experience, the Seal Sanctuary offers outstanding opportunities for learning about seal rehabilitation as well as the care and husbandry of captive grey seals, common seals and southern sea lions.

Core responsibilities for the position would include:

  • Daily maintenance of all animal facilities and physical resources, including the Seal Hospital, outdoor pools, enclosures and associated plant systems;
  •  All aspects of the rescue/rehabilitation/release of seal pups;
  •  All resident animal care and husbandry, including environmental enrichment and training;
  •  Ensuring that visitors are well informed about the animals in our care and about marine conservation issues through the delivery of daily talks and demonstrations.


This is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week.

The Person

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science / Management / Zoology or Biology or related subjects, and a proven track record within the field of applied animal care, handling, and husbandry. Knowledge and experience of captive marine mammal management, seal rehabilitation, husbandry training and plant maintenance are desirable.

S/he will need to have patience, a good sense of humour, superior communications skills, a strong sense of teamwork, and flexibility with working hours/days. Excellent health and stamina (including the ability to lift heavy weights), and a full clean driving licence, are also essential.
