Manager Policy Department Europe

AAP, Rescue Centre for Exotic Animals

The work and ideal of AAP is to improve, in a professional manner, the welfare of abused or neglected exotic mammals from all over Europe. This is achieved by providing shelter to animals from the illegal trade, circuses, animal-testing laboratories or private individuals. For most animals we find suitable homes worldwide in reserves, zoos or in our own facilities in the south of Spain.

AAP also works on the prevention of animal welfare problems by influencing both Dutch and European policy- and decision-makers and the general public. To achieve our goals AAP actively strives for strategic cooperation  with professional colleague organisations in this field. With more than 40 years of experience AAP is  an international authoritative expert.

We employ about 70 paid staff and more than 100 volunteers. AAP is situated in the middle of a green area near Almere. There are few places where you can see the result of your efforts as directly as at AAP – each animal taken into our care is rehabilitated. AAP distinguishes itself by having an enormous passion and a professional, open culture. Our core
values, accessibility, dedication and inventiveness form important guidelines.
We are looking for a
Manager Policy Department Europe (m/f)
(member of MT, 38-40 hours per week)
Policy Department
Within AAP, the Policy Department is responsible for influencing policy and (public) campaigning in Europe.  The Policy Department establishes the connection between sustainable solutions in our priority animal welfare files and the practical rescue, and thus becomes the strategic antenna of the organization.  Strategic analyses are translated into policy and action plans.  The execution of these plans is conducted by AAP itself and by co-operation with partner organizations.

Your part
You are responsible for the development  and management of the internationally operating Policy Department.  This department consists on the one hand of a small team of professionals employed by AAP and on the other hand of co-operation connections with (European) colleague organizations.  You are responsible for achieving concrete results in influencing governmental institutions and the general public.  In order to do so, you make long-term plans while at the same time you are able to make use of opportunities in the short term.  The goal is to modify and execute relevant laws and regulations in the most effective way possible.  To achieve this, you build up (international)  networks, initiate co-operation connections and know how to put these to good use. Obviously, you will travel regularly for your work. You make policy and annual plans and, together with your team, you ensure that these are carried out.  In addition, you are a member of the Management Team and report to the Board.  In short: a very interesting and important position within AAP in an expanding international team and work area.

Your experience
·        Academic work and intelligence level.
·        Experience with developing visions and strategic plans
·        Experience with and knowledge of working in an international context, in particular Europe
·        Experience with and knowledge of how to influence the areas of power in politics, government, media, science, interest groups and the public.
·        You are able to translate your viewpoints to different target groups.
·        You are a networker with strong social and communication skills.
·        You have knowledge of management techniques and have the ability to apply these.
·        You have excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken.
·        Knowledge of and experience within the sector (NGO / animal welfare) is  a preference.

We offer
We are offering a position with a great deal of responsibility. This will take place in an open and professional organization with animals and people at its heart, located in a natural environment.  The commencing salary ranges between € 3.535,- and € 4.585,- gross per month (based on 40 hrs) and depends on relevant work experience. Salary is expected to increase on an annual basis.
