ABOUT THE ROLE...

We are currently looking for an experienced and committed Conservation Manager to join the team in a full time permanent capacity. The successful candidate will manage Zoos SA’s existing species conservation programs as well as develop new programs which enable effective conservation outcomes to be achieved under Zoos SA’s Conservation Framework.

 

This position has a focus on local and regional conservation programs but will also provide oversight for Zoos SA international conservation projects as required. The position will be responsible for developing programs, sourcing funding, overseeing the full life-cycle of projects and managing associated finances, contracts and partnerships.

 

Reporting to, and working closely alongside the Director of Monarto Safari Park, together with other key stakeholders within the organization, the successful applicant will be a motivated, organised and enthusiastic team player who is looking for a challenging but rewarding role in delivering conservation outcomes for threatened species.

 

Based across both Zoos SA sites (Adelaide Zoo & Monarto Safari Park) as well as in the field, this position will work closely with Zoos SA staff, partners in the community and stakeholders; and must also be willing to travel and spend periods of time on Kangaroo Island.

 

As part of our Life Sciences team, day to day tasks may include:

  • Managing activities that deliver on-ground conservation, habitat restoration, last chance conservation and wildlife health which may involve:
    • Carrying out on-ground works of a practical nature
    • Construction and routine maintenance of facilities, resources and equipment
    • Supporting captive breeding population establishment
  • Working closely with staff and teams from other departments delivering conservation programs and projects
  • Building and maintaining relationships with external organisations and individuals that contribute to delivery of activities
  • Maintaining up to date knowledge about relevant conservation and research issues/developments.
  • Working consistently in accordance with established safety procedures to ensure animal security, personal safety, protection of coworkers and the public.
  • Preparing reviews, reports or feasibility studies where it furthers ZSA’s conservation objectives and projects.
  • Ensuring staff, volunteers and Members are kept informed of Zoos SA’s conservation work
  • Participating in relevant external conservation forums such as Recovery Teams.
  • Facilitating the delivery of CART.
  • Managing the Conservation Fund and ensure funding support goes to the appropriate organisations at the right times
  • Securing external funds to support research and conservation programs.
  • Developing and managing formal agreements or contracts where applicable.
  • Overseeing management of department budget.
  • Establishing and maintaining networks and relationships with other institutions, professional groups and individuals that contribute to delivery of Zoos SA’s activities
  • Ensuring appropriate ethics and permits are obtained and adhered to.
  • Undertaking activities in ways that minimise environmental footprint and promote ESD.
