SPARSHOLT COLLEGE HAMPSHIRE
Animal Health and Welfare Research Centre Technician - Birds
£16,077 - £19,359 (dependent upon experience and qualifications)
The Animal Health and Welfare
Research Centre (AHWRC) is going through an exciting period of change and
development. The position of AHWRC Technician – Birds will be integral to
supporting our stance on ensuring the husbandry and care of the species housed
on the AHWRC are of the highest standard and enhance the delivery of practical training
to our learners.
The bird section of the AHWRC is
an area that is undergoing significant development and will see a number of
exciting new species coming into the collection, a number of which have
conservation and research value. The AHWRC bird collection has a strong focus
around hornbills with a number of species housed within the collection already
and more to follow.
The post holder will:
·
Be responsible for the day-to-day husbandry of a range of bird
species, both domestic and exotic. There are plans to increase and diversify
the species housed on this section so a desire to learn and implement new
husbandry and care techniques is essential.
·
Support and provide cover on other sections of the AHWRC as and
when necessary.
·
Work closely with other AHWRC staff to ensure high standards of
animal husbandry, both directly and through providing supervision and support
to students in practical husbandry sessions, to achieve exemplary standards in
animal care, training and the learner experience.
Candidates should be educated to
at least Level 2 in a relevant vocational subject and be able to demonstrate
significant practical experience and expertise with a range of bird species.
A positive and flexible approach
to a varied workload, real enthusiasm for the animals you work with, and an
affinity for working with and engaging young learners are required. Some
educational or supervisory experience would be advantageous. The practical skills to maintain and improve
enclosures are also sought. The role
entails weekend and Bank Holiday working on a rota basis.
We reserve the right to close this vacancy earlier than the stated
closing date if sufficient applications are received.
