Experienced
Senior Keeper – Elephant Section
Full time –
40 hours per week (annualised)
We are looking for an Experienced Senior Keeper to
join our Elephant team and assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of our
elephants as well as other species currently
cared for by the department.
Our new elephant facility ‘Project Elephant Basecamp’ was completed in 2018 and now houses six Asian
elephants, all managed in protected contact. More details of our facility can

The successful applicant will be a proven team
player with a good knowledge of the zoological industry and an understanding of
the requirements needed to maintain and continuously improve the husbandry and
welfare of the animal species under their care. You will be required to work
with all species on your section in a safe and secure manner and will have excellent training skills
using positive reinforcement methods.
As a senior keeper you may be expected to oversee
and supervise other staff members and on occasions manage the section in the
absence of the Section Manager and Deputy Section Manager, this is an excellent
opportunity for anyone looking to progress in their career.
You will need to be hard working,
physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in
The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent qualification
and have a minimum of five years keeping
experience, a full valid driving licence is also essential.
Previous experience supervising staff and working with elephants in a
protected contact environment is essential, adhering to EAZA/BIAZA/DEFRA
guidelines. Experience working with a range of other category 1 animals is
desirable.
The salary for
this position is £24,000 per annum
