LOWER VERTEBRATES AND INVERTEBRATES

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.


 We currently have a vacancy for a Lead Keeper to join a busy and diverse section committed to advancing all aspects of zoo-based herpetological practice.  The successful candidate will supervise students and volunteers, working alongside keepers to undertake the daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support.  They will ensure that all exhibits and support facilities are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.


 The successful candidate will have experience of working in a zoo/aquarium with a diverse reptile, amphibian and invertebrates collection and must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of herpetological husbandry, exhibition, diet, reproduction and records. They will be qualified to first degree level in a biological related science or equivalent practical experience and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. 

The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and proven track record of delivering the highest standards of husbandry and exhibitry.  They will be skilled in the natural and artificial theming of exhibits.  They will be competent in Microsoft Office packages and knowledge of ISIS ZIMS and SPARKS is welcome. They will be able to manage and prioritise a diverse workload and have problem solving skills. 


 A full UK driving licence is desirable. Supervisory experience would be beneficial. The successful candidate will ideally have experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and working in species conservation programmes (ex and/or in situ). Horticulture, aquascaping or indoor plant theming is also desirable.   


 Salary is £21,384 per annum for a 40 hour week.
