Animals Asia and the China Bear Rescue Centre aims to rescue and rehabilitate bears, cats, dogs and provide life-long care for rescued animals at our award-winning sanctuary. This is your chance to join our new, but highly experience vet team and help make the world a kinder place for ALL animals.

You will be primarily based at our China Bear Rescue Centre, in Longqiao, Chengdu, but could have opportunities to help animals throughout the nation as needed. You are flexible and enjoy the challenge of working remotely. You will contribute to the constantly evolving field of bear medicine and management and will be expected to have a high degree of clinical skill and a passion for ongoing self-education.

You should have plenty of initiative and should be comfortable with both clinical and non-clinical work. There is a high degree of autonomy in this position, and while you will work closely with other team members you will have distinct areas of independent responsibility.

Responsibilities

Nursing/Technical:

  • Assist the Veterinary Surgeons by providing nursing, surgical assistance, performing post-mortem procedures, anaesthetic monitoring or husbandry for all domestic or wild animals and bears.
  • Perform in-house laboratory tests.
  • Prepare and administer any medication to domestic or wild animals and bears as directed by Veterinary Surgeons.

Maintenance:

  • Maintain medication stock levels and replenish medication stocks as required.
  • Arrange routine service or repairs of hospital equipment as required.
  • Maintain hospital cleanliness, bio-security and surgical equipment to a high standard.
  • Arrange the monthly ordering of veterinary supplies by carrying out a monthly stock take, preparing purchase orders, monitoring the delivery schedule and accepting deliveries.

Human Resources:

  • Assisting in planning, training and managing the recruitment of new Vet Nurse volunteers or new Vet Nurses.

Administration:

  • Record, update and document any procedures or observations performed on all domestic or wild animals and bears.
  • Maintain all databases and inventories to keep records accurate and up to date.
  • Continual review and updating of protocols and  standard operating procedures for all new equipment to ensure equipment is used correctly and to prevent damage.

You would be asked to start as soon as possible, pending international travel availability (this could be as early as the second half of 2021, or first half of 2022). Animals Asia will provide logistical support in terms of entry into China.

Requirements

  • Qualified Veterinary Nurse with Veterinary Nursing Degree (Degree level qualification in related field will be considered).  A degree-level education is a must: 5 years post qualification experience is required for visa application in veterinary practice, wildlife rehabilitation, zoo medicine or a specialist referral centre.
  • Experience in captive wildlife nursing, rehabilitation or animal welfare work. 
  • As this position will work in a team comprising staff from multiple cultures, self-awareness, empathy and patience are essential. Cultural sensitivity and/or history of working abroad would be beneficial.
  • A good sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and the ability to live and work closely with the rest of the team.
  • Ability to manage own time effectively and prioritise tasks.
  • Applicants must have proficient computer skills including competency using word & excel software.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Suitable candidates must be able to commit for a minimum of 2 years.

 Appointment is paid, full-time, five (5) days a week with some weekend/holiday work applicable.
