       Position: Veterinarian

Start date: Ideally to start in August 2022

Contract length: Negotiable, 6 months or longer

       Paid position: (non-profit salary)

       Accommodation, visa & food provided

Based on the outskirts of the capital city of Hargeisa, Somaliland (Horn of Africa). The city had no problems in terms of safety here and the COVID situation is not bad here.

At least 2 years qualified as a veterinarian. Required experience with small animals and experience on feline medicine and/or wildlife is desired.

On-site veterinarian for rescue center that currently hold over 70 cheetahs (between cubs and young adults), all victims of the illegal wildlife trade (destined to become pets in the Middle East, Somaliland is the exit route from Africa to the Middle East) or human-wildlife conflict (farmers killing their mothers)

The number of animals is always growing as CCF work with the Somaliland government who confiscate cubs (it is illegal to keep wildlife as pets) so as the vet when confiscated cubs are brought in (often malnourished, dehydrated, etc.) you will examine and treat as necessary, this can happen at any time.

A new site is currently being created outside of the city which will serve as a large sanctuary for these rescued cheetahs, so hopefully towards the end of the year the big project will be translocating all cheetah to this new facility 2 hours from the current site.

Very hands-on work with cheetahs, usually new confiscations involve very young cubs so hand-rearing can be a big part of the job (specially from Sept-Dec). Along with husbandry duties, diagnostic techniques, managing the clinic, inventory, clinical databases.

A lot of these cheetah were orphaned from a young age so haven't had much time with mother and are neglected, resulting in medical issues which can stay with them for a long time so a lot of care and attention is needed for their long-term care which will be another part of the job

Managing the preventative health care and routine health care of all the animals

Another aspect of the job is teaching local veterinarians about wildlife and cheetah care as this not something they get taught and CCF is making a big push to teach the local veterinary community

Work alongside other vets on site, work with different advisers very helpful and knowledgeable from around the world.

The clinic is well stocked with drugs, blood machines (hematology and biochemistry), portable x-ray machine and ultrasound machine

Diagnostic work on blood and faecal samples both for research and for clinical reasons.

Applications to include: CV, cover letter, salary range expectation, two references, date you are able to start and the country issuing your passport

Send applications to; Dr. Laurie Marker, director@cheetah.org / dr.lauriemarker@cheetah.org
