ANIMAL MANAGER - VIETNAM

Animals Asia is recruiting an experienced animal manager to be based in Vietnam and to work in partnership with the Elephant Conservation Centre and Hanoi Zoo to provide animal management advice and staff training to optimize the welfare of animals at both facilities.

Elephant Conservation Centre (ECC)

The ECC is a government-supported organization tasked with preventing the extinction of the Asian elephant in Vietnam and providing care for the captive population (currently used within tourism).

The animal manager will be expected to:

• provide support to the ECC elephant carers and veterinary staff
• deliver training in the care of captive elephants to meet their needs
• help to identify the needs of each elephant upon arrival
• implement management plans and safe working practices
• provide advice on management and operational protocols, to ensure a high standard of welfare for the elephants and safety for staff and visitors
• provide advice and support to ensure that the welfare of the individual animals is the highest priority within the centre's reproductive programme
• At times this role may contribute to the wider programme of management that includes the protection activities of the wild population.

Hanoi Zoo

Hanoi zoo is situated in the heart of the city. It has limited space but is home to approximately 800 animals including tigers, lions, gibbons, macaques, hippos, a variety of bird species and Asian elephants.

The animal manager will be expected to:

• work with the animal carers, veterinary staff and international advisers
• deliver training in the care of captive animals
• provide advice on management and operational protocols
• identify effective use of the enrichment funds received from third party foundation
• develop and oversee necessary staff training and ensure enrichment schedules are implemented
• manage other volunteer staff that work at the zoo from time to time

Key Skills:

• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in animal management within a captive facility (preferably with elephants in Protected Contact)
• Self motivated and independent with ability to work under difficult conditions
• Strong organizational skills in both operational and administrative areas
• Good communication skills with a calm and approachable manner
• Experience in training staff in animal care (preferably with elephants in Protected Contact)
• Willingness to learn Vietnamese (a translator will also be provided)
• Physically fit for the required tasks including daily manual handling
• Knowledge and experience of establishing, maintaining and ensuring compliance with standardized operating procedures
• Knowledge and experience in risk assessment within a zoological setting (preferably with elephants in Protected Contact)
• Experience in leading a team

This is a unique opportunity to work in Vietnam and significantly contribute to a programme that aims to be a leading tool in saving Vietnam’s elephant population for future generations, and developing high standards of care for captive wild animals formerly used within the tourism industry.

The position will be based in Buon Ma Thout (Central Highlands of Vietnam) with frequent travel to Hanoi. Some overseas travel will be required.

This is a 12-month post (initially), extension of this post is funding dependent

1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Hanoi Zoo is a government-run zoo located in central Hanoi. Over the past three years, Wild Welfare and Animals Asia has developed a positive relationship with Hanoi Zoo and have an agreement to improve the welfare of animals kept at the Zoo. In 2016 the focus was on animal enrichment and significant improvements have already been achieved, but there is scope for much more. It is hoped that Hanoi Zoo could serve as a ‘model’ for how other collaborative relationships can be built and improvements for animals can be made, that can be used to implement management procedures that meet the needs of captive wild animals at other facilities housing wildlife throughout Vietnam.

OVERALL JOB PURPOSE:

To work as an animal management advisor at Hanoi Zoo to develop and ensure the implementation of practical and sustainable improvements in animal care through the provision of on-site training.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take forward the positive work that has already been achieved at Hanoi Zoo and utilise your existing skills in animal keeping and management in an overseas environment. You will be working with two international animal welfare organisations, of which are both supported by a wider network of animal welfare and zoological institutions. You will have autonomy over your timetable, but are expected to mainly focus your work at the zoo although may be requested to attend meetings or visit other zoos elsewhere within Vietnam on request of the supporting institutions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

To work in collaboration with the staff at Hanoi Zoo, with support from Animals Asia and Wild Welfare*, to:

Review existing animal management and husbandry protocols.

Continue the work of previous ‘Captive Wild Animal Management Experts’ to develop improved animal management and husbandry protocols using a participatory approach; including enrichment calendars, feeding calendars to ensure varied and appropriate/ adequate diets for the various species, etc.

Provide staff training on animal management and husbandry to improve captive animal welfare;

Ensure agreed changes are understood by the staff and can be implemented beyond the scope of the programme.

Advise on how modifications to existing buildings/ cages can be made inexpensively/ how existing buildings can be best used to improve the welfare of the animals housed within them.

Support zoo senior management and AAF and WW in the development of a suitable master plan for the facility.

*Animal Asia has an office in Vietnam and can support with initial settling in and translation. Both AAF and Wild Welfare send international staff to Vietnam throughout the year that can provide both logistical and online support.

The daily operations (feeding, cleaning, etc.) are conducted by a team of local staff. The centre houses a large number, and variety, of wild animals, including: tigers, Asiatic Black bears, macaques, porcupines, various species of reptiles, civet cats, slow lorises, gibbons, etc.

Concerns:

There are significant concerns for the welfare of the animals housed in HWRC, currently the staff are not qualified to provide appropriate care to meet many of the needs of the large number, and variety, of wild animals – the animals are kept in inappropriate cages, with little or no enrichment and in some cases fed an inappropriate/ inadequate diet, resulting in poor psychological and physical states.  Animals Asia have an agreement with HWRC to work together to improve the welfare of the animals housed at the rescue centre.

It is hoped that Hanoi Zoo could serve as a ‘model’ for how other collaborative relationships can be built and improvements for animals can be made that can be used to implement management procedures that meet the needs of captive wild animals, at other facilities housing wildlife throughout Vietnam.

2. OVERALL JOB PURPOSE:

To work as a consultant in Hanoi to develop and ensure the implementation of practical and sustainable improvements in animal management at HWRC and Hanoi Zoo through the provision of on-site training.

3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

To work in collaboration with the staff at HWRC and Hanoi Zoo, with support from Animals Asia and Wild Welfare and Change for Animals Foundation, to:

• Review existing animal management and husbandry protocols.
