Tropical House Keeper
Part time – 2 days per week


Tropical Wings Zoo is one of the best interactive zoo attractions in Essex.  We pride ourselves on providing a unique butterfly and animal experience with fun for all age groups.
We are currently looking to recruit a Tropical House Keeper for our Butterfly House and Tropical Section.  Previous experience is desirable but not essential.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Butterfly House and Tropical Section, including species management of invertebrates, planting and maintenance. 

Your role will ensure that our collection is looked after to the highest standards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

•        Carry out all essential functions of Animal Keeper/Presenter.
•        Ensure the physiological and psychological maintenance of your animal collection, including health care.
•        With the approval of the Head Keeper, develop the butterfly collection and make suggestions in animal acquisition.
•        Stay alert to new developments in the maintenance and presentation of the animals in your care.
•        Have a special awareness for similar institutions within your field, current developments and new innovations elsewhere.
•        Ensure butterfly stock maintains suitable levels in order to uphold the visual impact of the Tropical House.

The ideal candidate should have a passion or knowledge of butterflies, birds etc.  Horticultural knowledge would be an advantage.
Excellent communication skills are essential within this role as you will be interacting with the general public children and/or young people.

Fixed term contract until 31st August 2016
Full Time (working 5 days per week including one weekend day and a requirement to work bank holidays)
Salary:  £14,807 - £17,200 per annum dependent on experience

Tropical Wings Zoo is a small but forward-thinking and dynamic organisation with an emphasis on interaction and education.  We are seeking a dynamic, confident and bubbly individual to join our team of Keeper/Presenters for the summer season in our renowned Tropical House.  You should have a proven interest in entomology, aquatics and horticulture. 

As a keen presenter you will engage visitors about our animals, conservation and the natural world, presenting information in a lively and interesting way to audiences and interacting with visitors during encounters as well as undertaking the daily animal husbandry for the resident animals in the Tropical House.

In order to be successful in this fantastic position you will have:
-        Experience of delivering presentations in a similar capacity
-        Excellent communication skills and be highly innovative, enthusiastic and motivated
-        Fantastic customer service skills
-        The willingness and ability to learn a vast amount of information about our animals
-        An animal related qualification is required
-        Adaptable to different working environments

Newquay Zoo is part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust family, comprising Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts, Slapton Ley and two urban nature reserves.  Newquay Zoo opened in 1969, has become one of the country's top Zoos, contributing towards ground breaking and innovative conservation programmes.  It has also proved itself to be one of the best visitor attractions in the South West.
We currently have a vacancy for voluntary internships for a period of 6 months (including a one month probationary period) working with our Tropical House department.   Newquay Zoo is open every day and the placements will be full time i.e. a five day working week including some weekends.  The main role of the keeping interns will be to attend the husbandry requirements of the Tropical House collection as directed by the Senior Keeper in charge.

All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that Newquay zoo cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions. To ensure that interns are provided with valuable experience; a training agreement will be completed and reviewed regularly and a training record will be provided upon completion of the placement.  

Objectives of the placement
-        To gain experience and understanding of the work of a zoo animal keeping department.
-        To apply own personal skills and take ownership of a series of tasks and/or a research project.
-        To reflect on training and experience throughout the placement.

Anticipated tasks/training provided
-        Assisting with daily animal husbandry e.g. feeding, cleaning, enrichment provision, enclosure modification etc.
-        Observations of animals and recording of relevant information.
-        Training in basic research methods.
-        Visitor interaction e.g. answering visitor questions in a polite and sensitive manner.
-        Assisting with student supervision at the direction of the head keeper.
-        Training in animal-management related computer software.
-        Training in all aspects of the company’s code of practise.

Skills Required
-        A qualification in an animal science related discipline would be desirable.
-        Previous animal-related work experience.
-        Good communication skills.
-        Adaptable to different working environments.
-        Able to work in a team and independently.
-        Physically fit for the demands of the post.
