INSTRUCTOR- TECHNICIAN

Land-based / animal management provision

Salary range: £18,311 - £20,543

(subject to annual review in August)

This post offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic person to join a new team developing a new area of the curriculum in an innovative way. Starting from August 2011, this post is an integral part of our successful Heritage team based within our grade 1 Beacon College. The role will include managing our animal collections and land based equipment, leading small group sessions and providing in-class support where appropriate. This is a relatively new role and offers considerable scope for the successful applicant to contribute to developments. We are looking for someone with experience working with small animals, wildlife, exotic collections or vet nursing, and who wants to work with students from 14-19 years of age. Reliability, imagination and drive are all vital and an interest in conservation or land-based issues is an advantage.

This post is permanent and available full time.

The Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife (BCEAW) is part of Sharjah Desert Park, a conservation and education facility managed by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) of Sharjah Government in the United Arab Emirates. The Centre focuses on captive breeding and research of the endemic fauna of the Arabian Peninsula.

We are currently recruiting for a suitably experienced and qualified Section Head, in the Rodent and Small Mammal Department to join our Team. The Department’s animals include wild rodents, hyrax, bats, hedgehogs and small carnivores from the Arabian Peninsula.

This position will report to the Operations Manager and will be responsible for the overall organisation and management of our rodent and small mammal collections, including supervision of three fulltime keepers.

The role will involve the implementation and progression of the animal collection plan; exhibit design and development; the efficient management of resources; staff leadership and development and assisting in the expansion of the Centre’s conservation and research activities in the United Arab Emirates and abroad with an emphasis on teamwork and a ‘hands-on’ operational approach.

The successful candidate should be qualified in an appropriate animal/conservation discipline, have a proven track record in rodent husbandry and breeding, and have a minimum of five years experience. Experience with insectivore and small carnivore husbandry and breeding will be an advantage.

Salary and benefits will be according to training and experience, and include one month’s vacation per year and on site accommodation for single persons.
