Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks, in conjunction with the Aspinall Foundation, are a charity based organisation committed to protecting rare and endangered animals from extinction through captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. The parks are home of one of the world’s most prized wild animal collections and are one of the biggest visitor attractions in Kent.

 

The Aspinall Foundation is a registered charity that is actively involved with several projects incorporating a diverse range of conservation activities both at their Kent based Howletts Wild Animal Park and Port Lympne Reserve and overseas projects in the Congo, Gabon, Indonesia and Madagascar. Over the past few years alone, we have released Back to The Wild a range of animals including 8 black rhino, 49 Javan langurs, 9 Javan gibbon, 11 European bison and over 60 western lowland gorillas back to their natural habitat.

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team of dedicated Gorilla keepers at Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve. The ideal candidate will have previous experience of working with Gorillas, in a mainstream zoological collection and an awareness of current conservation issues and a passion for animal welfare. A recognised Zoo Animal Management qualification would also be advantageous.

 

The main duties will involve:

·       observing the behavior, health and security of animals and reporting any problems to the Section Head

  • Preparation of approved diets and carrying out the correct feeding procedures.
  • Cleaning and maintaining enclosures as well as adjacent working areas.
  • Ensuring that safety and emergency procedures are followed at all times.
  • Maintaining courteous and helpful relations with visitors.

 

This is a physically demanding position so candidates must have a good level of physical fitness. A full valid driving licence is also essential to the role. Ideally you will possess good all-round animal husbandry skills and be enthusiastic in contributing to the enrichment of the Gorillas at the park.

 

This role is 32 hours a week working 4 days out of 7 including weekends and bank holidays, the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours. All applicants must have right to work in the UK.

Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks, in conjunction with the Aspinall Foundation, is a charity based organisation committed to protecting rare and endangered animals from extinction through captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. Port Lympne has one of the leading collections of large carnivores in the UK including tigers, lions, leopards, cheetah, wolves and African painted dogs (EEP holder for this species) and spectacled bears.

 

The Role

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake general husbandry duties, livestock dispatch and butchery, enclosure furnishing and maintenance tasks, and record keeping. The company is committed to staff training, you will have the opportunity to develop your professional skills and abilities, and to contribute towards plans for the section.

 

The Person

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years large carnivore experience, gained in a mainstream zoological collection. You will have excellent standards of husbandry and welfare and a sound knowledge of health and safety practices. You must be confident in engaging with the public, familiar with basic computer software packages and have good verbal communication skills. We are looking for a team player who is also confident to work alone.  Ideally, you will have gained DMZAA or an equivalent qualification, or be prepared to undertake this which the company will support. The role is physically demanding and will involve heavy lifting, so you will need to have a good level of physical fitness. You will also need to be comfortable working at height to perform enclosure maintenance duties and have a full, valid driving licence.

Port Lympne works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation, a charity committed to the conservation of rare and endangered animals through breeding and reintroduction programmes. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide range of species and contribute to in-situ conservation programmes. Our continued involvement in Java means that there is a possibility to become involved in the reintroduction of Javan gibbons and langurs in Java.

 

The Role

 

Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve, based in Kent, is seeking a passionate, experienced, hardworking and motivated animal keeper to work with a team of enthusiastic keepers on our primate section. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake all duties on the section from general husbandry including cleaning and feeding as well as enclosure maintenance and record keeping.

 

Conservation education plays a big role in the park so there will be plenty of opportunities for talks and encounters with the public. We provide extensive staff training and will offer the opportunity to develop your professional skills and abilities.

 

The Person

 

You must have experience working with primates, gained in a mainstream zoological collection and a full valid driving licence is essential. You will be a good communicator with the ability to impart knowledge to the section. You will need to be confident around all types of primates with a hands-on approach to the restraint and handling of animals where necessary. Knowledge of health and safety is essential. A working knowledge of basic Office software will be an advantage, as well as an understanding of ZIMS. 

 

The position is full time, working 40 hours per week, worked five days out of seven and will include weekends and bank holidays. A flexible approach to working hours is essential in any animal job.All applicants must have right to work in the UK

Blackpool Zoo is looking to fill the following key positions within its Animal Department:

 

EXPERIENCED LARGE MAMMAL KEEPER

 

Ref No - AD/MK2/20

 

 

Blackpool Zoo is looking for an experienced Large Mammal Keeper to assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of a wide range of exotic and domestic mammals that it currently maintains on its Large Mammal Section, many of which are managed as part of captive breeding programmes including Giraffe, Blesbok, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Lowland Tapir, Bongo, Giant Anteater and Aardvark. The successful candidate will also help in developing and moving forward the section within the framework of the animal department's aims and objectives.

 

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of three years’ experience working with a wide range of large mammal species.

 

EXPERIENCED LARGE MAMMAL (Carnivore) KEEPER

Blackpool Zoo is looking for an experienced Large Mammal Keeper with a particular focus/interest in working with Large Carnivores to assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of a wide range of exotic and domestic mammals that it currently maintains on its Elephant & Large Mammal Sections, many of which are managed as part of captive breeding programmes.

 

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of three years’ experience working with a wide range of large mammal species (in particular large carnivores of which the following species are currently kept at Blackpool zoo, Amur Tigers, Iberian wolfs and African Lions).

 

 

 

EXPERIENCED ELEPHANT KEEPER

With its new multi-million-pound elephant facility ‘Project Elephant Basecamp’ opened in 2018 award winning Blackpool Zoo is currently looking to fill a keeper position within its Elephant Section.

The successful candidate will be working in a protected contact keeping system and will be assisting in all aspects of the section’s work, including the delivery of the zoos current Elephant care program to our existing 1 male and 5 female Asian Elephants. The successful applicant will be required to work as part of a close-knit team and will be able to demonstrate good communication skills both written and oral.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of three years’ in a recognised zoological institution and have previous notable experience of working with elephants (preferably in a protective contact environment).  A full manual driving licence is essential and previous experience of driving Tractors/Multipurpose vehicles would be advantageous.

Salary of £19,255.00 per annum. Potential onsite subsidised single accommodation - dependant on availability.

The Keeper will provide information and answer visitor questions regarding the animals. The Keeper performs a wide range of semi-routine functions at either the Zoo or San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This class also consistently demonstrates the desire and ability to engage in positive relationships with internal and external customers. This position reports to a Lead or Supervisor.
