HOOFSTOCK KEEPER

The Hoofstock collection at Howletts consists of a wide variety of species including Bongo, Kudu and Black Rhino. This position will allow the right person to help shape and oversee the direction of the section over the coming years. We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and dedicated individual with excellent animal husbandry skills.

The ideal candidate will have previous animal husbandry experience gained in a similar position at a main stream zoological collection. They will also have an awareness of current conservation issues, a passion for animal welfare and be enthusiastic about contributing to the enrichment of the hoofstock species around the park.

A practical and proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of modern animal collections is essential along with a full, clean driving licence.

Occasional security shift duties are also required as part of this role for those living on site.

Working five days out of seven, including weekends and bank holidays the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours.

Description:        An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the keeper team at one of Wales’ leading tourist attractions, Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo in the heart of Pembrokeshire.

You’ll be based on the hoofstock section, working with a range of species including zebra, giraffe and black rhino. Training will also be given across a range of sections with responsibility for all aspects of animal care, including daily cleaning and feeding regimes, upkeep of animal records and maintenance of hygiene, working to strict safety protocols and standard operation procedures. With a mission to exceed guest expectations and work towards the future, you’ll also help to create magical moments for our guests to treasure by delivering feeding experiences and daily talks.

A full driving licence is essential, with experience of dumpers also advantageous. You’ll need to have a proven work history, with a minimum of 2 years, of working in a Zoo or Safari Park. Qualifications to degree level in Zoology or a related subject also desirable.

To be part of our Folly Farm family, you’ll need to have a positive, ‘can-do’ attitude with strong communication and team work skills. Must be flexible in your working hours and willing to work weekends/Bank Holidays.

A full time opportunity has arisen to join our Animal Management Team as a Team leader of our Hoofstock section.

We have exciting plans for our collection and exhibits, offering great opportunities for creative project and team work. For the right candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide range of hoofstock species from Dorcas Gazelle to White Rhino and contribute to captive breeding programmes with species such as Okapi, Grevys Zebra, Somali wild ass and Rothschild Giraffe.

This role is responsible for coordinating & supervising daily operations of the team, under the direction of the Collection Manager, therefore excellent communication, organisational and people management skills are essential.

The successful candidate will have extensive, specialist taxonomic knowledge and wide-ranging experience of the management of Hoofstock with a minimum Level 3 (ANC / DMZAA) or equivalent qualification in animal management or biological sciences.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Qualified Keeper to join our Hoofstock team on a part time basis, working 24 hours per week over 3 days. Our Qualified Keepers must have a strong generalist background with zoological experience as they may be required to work on a variety of sections. On this occasion however, an interest and previous experience with Hoofstock would also be an advantage

Qualified Keepers are responsible for carrying out all aspects of animal care, including husbandry routines, managerial operations and environmental enrichment, and supporting veterinary intervention as required.

The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative, display an interest in and commitment to animal welfare and conservation, and must possess strong communication skills

Section Head of Hoofstock

Section Head of Hoofstock

Situated near Hythe in Kent, Port Lympne Reserve works in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation; a charity committed to protecting rare and endangered animals from extinction through captive breeding and reintroduction programmes.

The section comprises various ungulate species – Malayan tapir, bongo, Visayan warty pigs, European bison, waterbuck, water buffalo and takin among others. The section is involved in reintroduction initiatives for a number of these species. The current section head has represented the park at various relevant meetings both in Europe and internationally.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to lead our team of dedicated hoofstock keepers at Port Lympne Reserve. The ideal candidate will have five or more years’ significant experience in a mainstream zoological collection, ideally in a similar position working with hoofstock. You should demonstrate an awareness of current conservation issues and a passion for animal welfare. The position will become vacant at the end of July 2016.

Essential requirements of the role:

-        To oversee the daily running of the section and its 6 staff.

-        Excellent husbandry skills and standards.

-        To contribute to future collection planning and enclosure design.

-        A good understanding of health and safety requirements for a modern zoological collection.

-        The ability to supervise staff and ensure that the section is maintained to the highest standards.

-        To produce a budget for the section and monitor expenditure.

-        The ability to adapt to changing priorities and situations calmly and efficiently.

-        Excellent organisational and communication skills and report writing.

-        To lead the section by example with a proactive attitude.

-        A full, valid driving licence.

Desirable requirements:

-        Experience driving farm machinery.

-        Maintenance and machinery skills.

-        IT literate.

This role is responsible for supporting both the team and the Team Leader and ensuring high standards of animal husbandry and welfare at all times whilst ensuring that all exhibits and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards. In order to achieve this, the successful candidate must possess current knowledge of issues affecting zoological collections and their contributions to conservation, science, sustainability & education.

Applicants will be able to demonstrate the importance of team work and the benefits of self-motivation. You must possess strong communication skills to be able to fulfill your role as ambassador with our guests and key contributor within your team.
