Sealion and Penguin Trainer

Colchester Zoo are looking for an Experienced Sealion and Penguin Trainer to assist in the continued training and husbandry of our Patagonian sealions and Humboldt penguins.

The ideal applicant would have a minimum of three years experience working with sealions and penguins together with a recognised animal management qualification and basic knowledge of marine and fresh water LSS.

As well as the continued training and husbandry of these animals, duties will include daily presentations to the general public and mentoring members of staff ensuring continued development of team members.

You will provide support to the head of section, demonstrating excellent communication and decision making skills, being able to work as part of a team, or singularly when necessary.

A recognised scuba diving qualification and full clean driving license are preferred but not essential.

The Role

A challenging position has arisen for a full time Animal Care Assistant at the National Seal Sanctuary, Cornwall.

Core responsibilities for the positions include:

 daily maintenance of the Seal Hospital facility and its surroundings;
 rescue, rehabilitation and release of grey seal pups;
 resident animal care and husbandry, including training and enrichment;
 daily maintenance of physical resources, pools and associated systems;
 the delivery of entertaining and informative daily talks to visitors.

The Person

Ideal candidates will have a proven track record in applied animal care, handling, and husbandry. Most important is a firm understanding of the core functions and values of the Sanctuary, and a strong desire to support the Sanctuary team in maintaining the highest standards of performance in all job responsibilities.

The candidates will need patience, a good sense of humour, superior communication skills, a strong sense of teamwork, and flexibility with working hours/days. Excellent health, stamina and strength, and a full clean driving licence, are essential.

The Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary opens a window into a watery wonderland, teeming with amazing sea creatures of astonishing variety. Nestling amidst the pine trees on the shores of picturesque Loch Creran, the Centre combines a spectacular aquarium with a busy rescue and rehabilitation facility for both common and grey seal pups.

The Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary is Scotland's leading animal rescue centre caring for dozens of sick, injured and orphaned seal pups every year. To continue this wonderful work we are seeking a Displays Supervisor to manage the team.

In this varied and highly challenging role, you will have full responsibility of ensuring that all livestock displays are well presented and maintained always working towards providing our visitors with world class displays. You’ll also take responsibility for managing the sanctuary’s seal hospital that rehabilitates rescued seals in the local area as well as look after the resident seals, otters and penguins.

To be successful, you’ll have excellent knowledge of fish husbandry from working within an aquarium and a good knowledge of plant & equipment as you’ll be required to ensure our displays remain of a constant high standard. A relevant qualification in marine biology (or equivalent) is essential and a specialist knowledge of a particular species kept at the centre would be advantageous. Experience of managing medium to large projects is key as we are constantly looking for new ways to refresh and revitalise our attractions. Naturally you’ll have experience of managing a budget, managing a small team, good communication skills and be flexible with working hours to meet the needs of the business. A driving licence is also essential.

Salary range £17,000 - £18,000 per annum

A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Presenter to join Bristol Zoo’s Presentations Team within the Learning Department. This post-holder supports and deputises for the Presentations Manager.

The successful applicant will have considerable experience in animal husbandry, animal training and presentations skills, as well as proven leadership ability.

The Presentations Section develops and delivers the animal demonstrations and enclosure presentations as well as staffing the walkthrough exhibits, husbanding and training the Section’s animals and advising the Animal Department on husbandry training.

Experience with seal husbandry would also be a great advantage.
