Senior Manager - Animal Care and Welfare

 

Ski Dubai is looking for a Senior Manager - Animal Care and Welfare for their successful educational project in United Arab Emirates.

 

Working closely with the Head of Animal Care & Welfare, and Senior Animal Care Specialists, the Senior Manager is responsible for managing and working alongside staff, managing operations, and directing the penguin training program while maintaining high quality animal care and guest experiences.

 

Key Tasks:

·      Ensure responsible health protocol and daily maintenance of penguins

·      Oversee daily cleaning of exhibit

·      Oversee proper air and water quality

·      Oversee proper light cycles

·      Proficient in identification of animal behavioral problems/concerns with solutions to alleviate such concerns

·      Assist and perform any veterinary procedures when required

·      Expert knowledge and experience in effective training techniques, applications, and tools

·      Ensure high-end show quality animal presentations

·      Ensure a high standard training and enrichment program

·      Monitor and advise staff during penguin breeding season

·      Oversee records for each bird

·      Performs other duties as required

·      Drive and oversee the Snow Penguin accreditation process

Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, related field, or equivalent experience

·      7-10 years of training experience, preferably with marine animals

·      5-10 years in a managerial role in the zoo and aquarium industry

·      Familiar with Word, Excel, Publisher, and animal record keeping systems

·      Ability to prepare and present professional PowerPoint presentations

·      Solid background in theater or public speaking

Key Competencies:

·      The know-how and experience of maintaining an animal population

·      Previous experience in staff supervision and team dynamics

·      Staff development.

·      Communication between departments and facilities

·      Water/air quality analytical equipment

·      Experience in egg Incubation and chick rearing

Typical Physical Demands:

·      Be able to lift 25kg to shoulder height

·      Carry materials, transport boxes, buckets, etc. throughout the facility

·      Standing, walking, and working for long periods in a very cold environment.

Animal Care Specialist – Ski Dubai

 

The Animal Care & Welfare team is currently looking for Animal Care Specialists to join their team in Dubai, UAE.  

We fully appreciate that there are not a lot of people out there with Penguin training experience so you will learn this aspect on the job. However, it is essential that applicants have considerable animal husbandry and training experience with a serious and genuine interest in promoting an educational conservation message to our multinational guests.

The Animal Care Specialists work as a team and participate in the husbandry and training of the penguin collection, including the maintenance and cleaning of the penguin facility, preparation of diets, penguin feeding and the set-up and maintenance of presentation areas.

They will work closely with a team of friendly, outgoing, and dedicated international trainers presenting the penguins to our guests in our educational, interactive encounters.  The penguins AND the trainers ARE the team.

 

Key Tasks:

·      Monitor and perform daily feeding and training of King and Gentoo penguins

·      Monitor penguins and guests during public demonstrations

·      Clean exhibit daily, including touch-up after presentations

·      Manage the LSS and perform daily water quality checks

·      Observe penguins for signs of stress or illness

·      Keep records up to date each day

·      Computer literate in Excel, Word, PowerPoint

·      Public speaking for a variety of penguin presentations and guest orientation

·      Willing to work weekends, public holidays and overtime when required

·      Performs other duties as required

·      Reliable

 

Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Zoology or Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals or related field or equivalent experience

·      Preferably three years of training experience, ideally with marine mammals. Alternative expertise in animal husbandry given serious consideration (incubation, hand rearing).

 

Key Competencies:

·      Previous experience in maintaining living specimens

·      Ability to work well with staff and supervisors

·      Ability to perform well under duress typical of positions dealing with living organisms

·      Able to work alone and to work with others

 

Typical Physical Demands:

·      Be able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height

·      Carry materials, transport boxes, buckets, etc. throughout the facility

·      Able to work on rotation

·      Standing, walking for long periods in an extremely cold freezing environment

Ski Dubai is looking for a Head Penguin Trainer for their successful educational project in United Arab Emirates.

Working closely with the Curator and Senior Trainer, the Head Penguin Trainer is responsible for managing and working alongside staff, directing the penguin training program and maintaining high quality guest service.

Key Tasks:

·        Ensure responsible health protocol and daily maintenance of penguins

·        Oversee daily cleaning of exhibit

·        Oversee proper air and water quality

·        Oversee proper light cycles

·        Proficient in identification of animal behavioral problems/concerns with solutions to alleviate such concerns

·        Participate in daily penguin encounters

·        Assist and perform any veterinary procedures when required

·        Develop and conduct daily training of penguins regarding daily march and feeding and photo sessions with the public

·        Effective training techniques, applications, and tools

·        Develop and implement high-end show quality animal presentations

·        Develop and implement a high standard training and enrichment program

·        Prepare and maintain exhibit for penguin breeding season

·        Oversee records for each bird Instruct and mentor trainers

·        Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

·        Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, related field or equivalent experience

·        Several years of training experience, preferably with marine mammals

·        Familiar with Word, Excel and animal record keeping systems

·        Ability to prepare and present PowerPoint presentations

·        Solid background in theater or public speaking

·        Scuba Diving certificate

Key Competencies:

·        The know-how of maintaining an animal population

·        Previous experience in staff supervision and team dynamics

·        Staff development.

·        Communication between departments and facilities

·        Water/air quality analytical equipment

·        Experience in egg Incubation and chick rearing

Typical Physical Demands:

·        Be able to lift 25kg to shoulder height

·        Carry materials, transport boxes, buckets, etc. throughout the facility

·        Standing, walking, and working for long periods in a very cold environment.
