The Head of Living Collections will provide consistent overall management of the animal collections and the team that manage them; to ensure the smooth operational function of the Zoo Animal Management team.

About the Role:

We have an exciting vacancy for a Head of Living Collections to join our team in a full time permanent role. The role is based at ZSEA head office.

Main Duties:

• Oversee and manage the development and delivery of the ZSEA living collection plan, across a site ZSEA, sourcing, and curating stock and developing the husbandry and breeding guidelines for the Charity in compliance with ZSEA Policies and Procedures.

• To consistently achieve agreed standards and responsibilities and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement/acquisition of job-related knowledge and skills.

• Oversee demonstrations ensuring they offer the best possible visitor experience.

• Adhere to and always ensure health and safety compliance and in line with current legislation and as set out in ZSEA Health and Safety policy and various operating procedures and protocols.

• To support the Zoo Operations by providing cover and support as directed.

• Inspire and encourage others to feel part of a team through trust, respect, and support.  Lead by example.

• Manage, mentor, and develop a team of professional animal managers and staff.

• Ensure all exhibits and presentation areas are maintained to the highest standard

• Have budgetary responsibility for the staffing and operational needs of the Living Collections at ZSEA, with direction from the Head of Zoo Operations.

About you:

• You will have a BSc in a relevant area or equivalent experience.

• Have gained prior experience in managing and developing large teams.

• Have an in depth knowledge of up-to-date animal husbandry practices in a zoological collection environment.

• Have an understanding of Zoological licences. 

• You will have the ability to prioritise and be very well organised.

• You will be a great communicator and be able to challenge ideas respectably.

• Can demonstrates a consistent, collaborative, and respectful approach to management and building relationships with other teams.

• You will respect confidentiality.

• Have strong problem-solving skills and able to help others to resolve them.

• Stay calm in difficult situations.

• Be able to stay focused on tasks in hand.

• Have the ability to listen and have empathy and understanding.

• Be already playing an active role in the BIAZA and EAZA communities.

JOB SUMMARY: Demonstrate excellent representation of the aquarium at all times through a positive, energetic, and teamwork - focused work ethic.

Direct veterinary services for the Aquarium’s animal collection and rescued animals in the Animal Rescue Program, including preventative medicine and response to veterinary concerns.

Working collaboratively with husbandry curators, play a leadership role in ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and that nutritional, environmental, and exhibit needs of animals are met and regulatory compliance.

Facilitate multi-departmental communications as it pertains to animal health and welfare and serve as a leader on the Aquarium’s Animal Management Team and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

Oversee all operations of the Animal Rescue Program, clinical laboratory, and veterinary hospital.

Supervise the veterinary team and Animal Rescue Program staff., including the clinical laboratory manager, associate veterinarian, veterinary intern, veterinary technician, and assistant manager of Animal Rescue Program.

Provide mentorship, clinical training, and oversight to veterinary students and the Veterinary Intern.

This position serves a key leadership role in all aspects of animal health and welfare.

Animals Asia signed an agreement with the Vietnamese Government to bring bear bile farming to an end.  In 2021, we will be taking the final steps to make that happen and require a qualified Veterinary Nurse to fulfil an upcoming vacancy in our team of two nurses, supporting a wider veterinary team of eight members working to make the world a kinder place for animals.

You will be primarily based at our Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre, in Tam Dao National Park, while being an important member of the team to provide oversight at our new sanctuary in central Vietnam. You are flexible and enjoy the challenge of working remotely.

You are highly motivated, experienced, and empathetic. You are passionate about animal welfare and people. You have highly developed interpersonal skills, and get deep satisfaction and fulfilment from providing hands on training in veterinary nursing and animal welfare. You get a great deal of job satisfaction by seeing other people learn from you and being able to fulfill tasks as excellently as you can. Most of your hands on nursing in this role will be in supporting and supervising veterinary interns to be able to provide evidence-based veterinary care.

Animal Keeper - African Experience Section

Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks, in conjunction with the Aspinall Foundation, are a charity based organisation committed to protecting rare and endangered animals from extinction through captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. The parks are home of one of the world’s most prized wild animal collections and are one of the biggest visitor attractions in Kent.

 

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team of dedicated African Experience keepers at Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve. The section comprises of various species including; Rothchild Giraffe, Black Rhino, Ostrich, Eland, Chapman Zebra and Blue Wildebeest among others.

 

The main duties will involve:

·        Observing the behavior, health and security of animals and reporting any problems

·        Cleaning and maintaining enclosures

·        Maintaining courteous and helpful relations with visitors

·        Assisting with the movement and transport of animals

·        Contributing to the enrichment of the species on the section

 

You must have experience working with animals, gained in a mainstream zoological collection and a full valid driving licence is essential. You will possess excellent all-round animal husbandry skills, combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

 

This is a physically demanding position, so candidates must have a good level of physical fitness. Experience of driving tractors is also essential to the role. It is desirable that you have previous experience of working with Giraffe, along with a broad understanding of species’ biology, husbandry and welfare.

 

This permanent role is 40 hours a week working 5 days out of 7 including weekends and bank holidays, the successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours. All applicants must have right to work in the UK.
