Orangutan Foundation International has volunteer opportunities available for active individuals who want to get their hands dirty and help save one of the earth’s most bio-diverse areas. Come to Borneo, the world’s oldest rainforest, and help OFI build a much needed structure! You may be building a bridge, an enclosure, an infant orangutan jungle gym, or another structure to help OFI continue our work to save orangutans in the rainforest.

Field volunteers complete projects that aid critically important aspects of our on-the-ground programs. The Field Construction Volunteer Program was developed because concerned individuals asked to participate directly in the work. We believe that together we can ensure that wild orangutans do not become extinct in our lifetimes.

Shaldon Wildlife Trust is a small zoo on the Devon coast. Set in an acre of woodland, we are the smallest member of BIAZA and EAZA. Despite this we are active members of the zoo community and support conservation projects all over the word. Over the years we have gained a great deal of expertise in the breeding of many species, particularly small primates, and are regarded highly in this field.

We are currently advertising for voluntary internships for a period of 9-12 months working with our keeping department. Shaldon Wildlife Trust is open every day and the placements will be full time i.e. a five day working week including some weekends. The main role of the keeping interns will be to attend the husbandry requirements of the animal collection as directed by the Head Keeper in charge.

All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that Shaldon Wildlife Trust cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions. To ensure that interns are provided with a valuable experience; a training agreement will be completed and reviewed regularly and a training record will be provided upon completion of the placement. 

Objectives of the placement

• To gain experience and understanding of the work of a zoo animal keeping department.
• To apply own personal skills and take ownership of a series of tasks and/or a research project.
• To reflect on training and experience throughout the placement.

Anticipated tasks/training provided

• Assisting with daily animal husbandry e.g. feeding, cleaning, enrichment provision, enclosure modification etc.
• Observations of animals and recording of relevant information.
• Training in basic research methods.
• Visitor interaction e.g. answering visitor questions in a polite and sensitive manner.
• Assisting with student supervision at the direction of the head keeper.
• Training in animal-management related computer software.
• Training in all aspects of the company’s code of practice.

Skills Required

• A qualification or enrolment on an animal science related discipline would be desirable.
• Previous animal-related work experience.
• Good communication skills.
• Adaptable to different working environments.
• Able to work in a team and independently.
• Physically fit for the demands of the post.

Tropical Wings Zoo is an up and coming Zoological collection with a diverse range of species and a diverse range of guest experiences. 2015 is bringing a new phase of initiatives and developments focused around Conservation, Education and Research programmes. We pride ourselves on providing an exceptional guest experience and our aim is to be one of the best small interactive attractions in the UK.

We currently have 6 opportunities for long term Volunteers for a period of 6 – 12 months assisting within our animal management departments.

The opportunities will be a recommended 3-4 days a week, with an 8.30am start and a 4.30 – 5.30pm finish depending on the time of year.

The long term volunteers will receive exceptional training and also assist in the husbandry requirements of the collection as directed by an assigned mentor.

All long term volunteers are unpaid; however there is the option, depending on your circumstances for reasonable expenses to be paid, such as travel costs if these are accrued.  These opportunities provide valuable experience for people from all backgrounds; a training agreement will be completed and reviewed regularly and a training record will be provided upon completion of the placement.

Long term volunteers can partake in monthly onsite workshops and training ranging from animal handling and restraint, Nutrition, enclosure design, Enrichment, and even Zoo licensing and legislation.

Hand Rearing of Cheetah Cubs

Cheetah Outreach is currently seeking volunteers to assist in the hand-rearing of cheetah cubs next breeding season (approx. April - Oct 2015). We are looking for individuals to come to South Africa for a minimum of one month to volunteer on our cub rearing programme.

In partnership with the Ann Van Dyk Cheetah and Wildlife Trust (previously the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust) we are responsible for the hand-rearing of cheetah cubs. These hand-reared cubs are trained as ambassador animals and will be sent to zoo education programmes around the world where they do vital work in education and fund raising, thereby supporting conservation of cheetahs in the wild. Volunteers for the cub-rearing project must have appropriate experience and/or qualifications in any of the following disciplines: animal husbandry, veterinary nursing, zoo keeping, wildlife rehabilitation or neonatal care.

This is a very rewarding experience, but as with caring for any neonate, long hours and lots of cleaning is required.

As we are dealing with pregnancy and young cubs, there may be times when cubs are expected but do not arrive, if this happens, volunteers would be able to assist at the main Cheetah Outreach facility, working with the adult cheetahs.

A deposit of 3000 South African Rand is required to take part in the project. Accommodation is provided free of charge and you will receive a nominal amount of money towards food costs.

Flights to South Africa are not provided.

Wild Week summer school programme Volunteers

We have been running a very successful Wild Week summer school programme at Paignton Zoo for the past 13 years and due to its popularity we are planning to repeat it this year.  Wild Weeks are for children aged 8 to 12 years old and provide a great mix of behind the scenes animal experiences, art and craft activities and generally having fun.  The programme runs for 4 weeks over the summer holidays, from the 28^th of July to 22^nd August and children attend every day for one week.

None of this is possible without the invaluable contribution of a dedicated team of volunteers. These volunteers are an essential element to ensure the weeks run smoothly by assisting our staff to manage the group and run the activities.  For those who are interested, there is also chance to get involved beforehand in the organisation of the weeks and develop the programme of activities.

Volunteering with Paignton Zoo Wild Weeks is the ideal opportunity for those who wish to go on to work in the education sector to gain vital experience of working with children and to develop their CV.  It is also the perfect way for people interested in conservation to see parts of the Zoo which are usually off-show to the public.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for Wild Week 2014 and are able to offer two types of volunteer opportunities this year: 

• Support Volunteers who support Wild Week across the period of a week, or more, from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday (various dates through July and August)
• Development Volunteers who will be involved in the organisation leading up to the Wild Weeks as well as assisting during the weeks themselves.  The development role is ideal for those who would like to get a wider volunteer experience.  It will cover a longer period of involvement, which can be flexible to suit the individual, but ideally 10 hours per week (more if possible) during June and July and at least two of the Wild Weeks themselves so that you can see how the activities you helped to plan have worked and make any necessary changes for following weeks.

All those who take part are given a certificate for their portfolio and can request a personal reference which can be used as valuable evidence for your future career. Due to the nature of the role, all Wild Week volunteers will need to be DBS checked.

If you are successful, we take up 2 references (one of whom must be able to comment on your suitability to working with children) and you are also asked to attend an essential training day on Saturday 14th June to enable you to volunteer with us.  During this day we will be able to tell you more about the activities on offer, provide the necessary child protection and health and safety training and you will have a chance to get know the team you will be volunteering with.

The Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL) is a primate sanctuary located in the South Kivu Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Centre was established in 2002 by the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Centre de Recherche en Sciences Naturelles (CRSN) and is now managed by a consortium of local and international organisations including the ICCN, CRSN, Coopera, Venner av Lwiro and Friends of Lwiro Australia.

The CRPL currently houses over fifty chimpanzees and seventy monkeys, representing more than ten different species, all victims of the illegal wildlife trade in the DRC. With established education and awareness programs, and as the only wildlife sanctuary in the region, the CRPL acts as a crucial resource for all conservation organisations working in the area.

The Centre is situated just outside the boundary of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega (PNKB), making it the ideal venue for great ape health, law enforcement and conservation programs and is included in the PNKB’s Operational Plan and also in the Conservation Action Plan (CAP) for the Kivu Landscape, indicating the Centre’s imperative role in conservation in the region. The CRPL is also a Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) member sanctuary.

Over the past few years the CRPL has been developing new facilities to remove the animals from the cages in which they previously lived and to house them in open plan enclosures, enhancing their quality of life and improving our rehabilitation methods. The next 5 years will be a dynamic time for the CRPL and we are seeking 2 persons to assist with this process of change.

These positions are of a voluntary nature, however assistance will be provided with basic costs. While the CRPL runs a volunteer program for paying volunteers, these positions will hold more responsibility.

The primary position we are searching for would be responsible for:

·

Grant writing and fundraising (this is the most important aspect of the job)

·

Donor/Sponsor relationships

·

Web communications and administration

·

Overseeing the volunteer program

·

Education programs, in particular the Roots and Shoots program

·

Overseeing the sanctuary

The second position would be responsible for:

·

Overseeing the new facilities in the sanctuary, animal integrations etc.

·

Overseeing construction programs

·

Organising basic maintenance

 

We are ideally seeking a couple, or 2 friends, for these positions as Lwiro can be a little isolated, however we will take applications from individuals for the primary position only. The primary position is the priority for the CRPL as we do not receive any government funding and rely on grants and donations for all our costs. As these positions are voluntary, you will be responsible for your own expenses – including but not limited to travel, visas, insurance etc. Housing and food will be provided by the CRPL. These positions are for 12 months (with a 3 month probation period), with the option to extend further. Assistance with visa costs can be negotiated after the 3 month probation period.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required

·

Fluency in written and spoken English – for the primary position.

·

Advanced computer skills; the ability to navigate the internet, produce documents to a high standard, maintain a

blog and other social media, use Microsoft Office programs to a high standard – for the primary position.

·

Exceptional ability to communicate with donors, sponsors, partners and staff.

·

Some knowledge of and an interest in conservation and animal welfare principles.

·

Good organisational skills.

·

Captive animal management background– Great Ape or primate management skills a further advantage.

Desirable

·

Background in fundraising and grant writing – for the primary position.

·

Spoken French.

·

Experience living and working in a developing nation (particularly Africa) for more than 6 months.

·

Staff management skills.

We are now looking for enthusiastic passionate people for 6 months voluntary internships working alongside full time keeping staff. Vacancies are available on various sections including falconry, primates, small carnivores and exotic birds. A genuine passion for animals, conservation and education is essential.

As well as general husbandry there is also the potential to help with animal encounters and answer visitor questions so confidence and excellent customer service is a must.

Volunteers for Neotropical Primate Conservation

Neotropical Primate Conservation is a UK Charity dedicated to the conservation of monkeys and their habitat in the tropical rainforests of South and Central America. We conduct research on ecosystems, protect wilderness areas for the future, reforest degraded habitat, rescue, rehabilitate and reintroduce primates to their natural habitats and promote conservation education and public awareness.

We are seeking volunteers to help at our project in Amazonas, Peru.

Volunteers will collect data on the critically endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey and other species, participate in habitat restoration and reforestation, and assist in improving local awareness on environmental issues through education activities in rural schools.

4 and 6 week long expeditions are available, starting mid January 2012 and mid February 2012. No qualifications or skills are necessary apart from a basic level of spoken Spanish, good fitness level, adaptation to hard physical work and basic living conditions and a willingness to help. We provide training in field methods, a window into a career as a conservation biologist and an unforgettable experience. It is also
possible to participate as an internship for undergraduate students if organized in advance. In addition to a challenging program of field research, you will visit to the Gocta waterfall, third highest in the world and situated in the heart of the Peruvian cloud forest, and to the ruins of the Chachapoyas citadel of Kuelap.
