Howletts is a world class wildlife park run by the international conservation charity The Aspinall Foundation and works to support a number of overseas conservation projects including the Java Primate Project in Indonesia, Gorilla reintroduction in Congo and Gabon, Black Rhino, Cheetah reintroduction and community conservation in Madagascar. We are home to a collection of rare and endangered mammals, including Javan gibbons, Sumatran Tigers, Western Lowland Gorillas, Black Rhino, Eastern Bongo, Snow Leopards to name a few.

 

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an Animal Presenter to join the team at Howletts Wild Animal Park. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and motivated individual, with excellent general knowledge of wildlife and modern wildlife conservation issues, as well having a practical understanding of animal welfare.

 

The successful candidate will be key to helping us increase the visitor experience at Howletts, through guided tours, as well as leading all animal experiences. Excellent customer service skills are a desirable quality for this role.

Key Duties:

·       Run ‘Keeper for a Day’ experiences

·       To facilitate all Animal Encounters

·       Maintain an exceptional standard of service delivery to all guests and day visitors

·       Conduct talks, on the various species found across our Parks as well as our international conservation projects, to guests and day visitors.

·       Find innovative ways of promoting the ‘Keeper for a Day’ and Animal experiences at Howletts.

·       Work alongside the Marketing and Customer Service teams to update all animal encounters.

·       Work alongside Keepers across all animal sections as and when required

 

Working 40 hours per week, 5 days out of 7 as per the roster. The successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours which will include weekends and bank holidays. A reliable mode of transport is recommended due to our remote location. All applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

£17,844 - £19,359 (dependent upon experience and qualifications)

 

The Animal Health and Welfare Research Centre (AHWRC) is going through an exciting period of change and development. The position of AHWRC Technician – Birds will be integral to supporting our stance on ensuring the husbandry and care of the species housed on the AHWRC are of the highest standard and enhance the delivery of practical training to our learners.

The bird section of the AHWRC is an area that is undergoing significant development and will see a number of exciting new species coming into the collection, a number of which have conservation and research value. The AHWRC bird collection has a strong focus around hornbills with a number of species housed within the collection already and more to follow.

 

The post holder will:

 

·      Be responsible for the day-to-day husbandry of a range of bird species, both domestic and exotic. There are plans to increase and diversify the species housed on this section so a desire to learn and implement new husbandry and care techniques is essential.

 

·      Support and provide cover on other sections of the AHWRC as and when necessary.

 

·      Work closely with other AHWRC staff to ensure high standards of animal husbandry, both directly and through providing supervision and support to students in practical husbandry sessions, to achieve exemplary standards in animal care, training and the learner experience.

 

Candidates should be educated to at least Level 2 in a relevant vocational subject and be able to demonstrate significant practical experience and expertise with a range of bird species.

 

A positive and flexible approach to a varied workload, real enthusiasm for the animals you work with, and an affinity for working with and engaging young learners are required. Some educational or supervisory experience would be advantageous. The practical skills to maintain and improve enclosures are also sought.  The role entails weekend and Bank Holiday working on a rota basis.

The College is seeking to appoint an Animal Care Technician, to provide sector leading husbandry for its diverse and exciting animal collection. The successful applicant will also aid in providing the best learning environment for students by demonstrating best practice, setting up lessons and assisting in these as required. Flexibility is needed within this working role to provide an effective service within the college. 

 

The successful Candidate will become part of a team that is committed to providing industry leading standards for its animals and who are continuing to develop practices and promote these throughout the sector. The animal collection has seen exciting growth over recent years, with the introduction of numerous reptile and amphibian species, as well as many others. Demonstrable experience of working with a range of herptile species, to a modern husbandry standard, is preferred, as the successful candidate will have an active input in the direction of the herptile collection.

Primate and Nocturnal Mammal Keeper

 

Role Purpose and Dimensions:

 

We are looking to recruit a primate and nocturnal mammal keeper to work with our growing collection of species that fall within these categories. This will include work with all primates and small mammals, including porcupines, lemurs, a growing collection of callitrichids, night monkeys, two loris species, cuscus and echidnas to name a few. At certain times you may be required to help fulfil duties on other sections.

 

The Role:

 

·      Reporting to the Lead Keeper/ Animal Manager to make sure that the section runs smoothly and effectively.

·      Ensuring the health and welfare of all animals.

·      Feed, clean out and provide enrichment for animals.

·      Deliver talks and presentations throughout the day, engaging with guests wherever possible.

·      Upkeep of enclosures including horticultural maintenance and gardening.

·      Maintain a professional approach to all visitors and colleagues across departments.

·      Ensuring the health and safety of yourself and colleagues.

·      Delivery of informative, enthusiastic and engaging talks and animal experiences, interacting with visitors and offering an exemplary and 5ive star service for guests.

·      Liaise and communicate with senior staff members.

·      Maintain accurate animal records.

·      Facilitate an exciting and memorable experience for guests.

 

Key Objectives:

·      Feed all animals adhering to instructions.

·      Ensure that sufficient feed is available for the next day/feed.

·      Make sure the food preparation areas are left clean and tidy at all times.

·      Ensure each animal’s nutritional requirements are met.

·      Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of all animal enclosures.

·      Monitor all animals for signs of illness, injury, breeding, distress and make sure any concerns or problems are promptly reported and then recorded.

·      Interact with guests wherever possible, including animal experiences, ensuring that health and safety protocols are adhered to at all times.

·      Ensure record sheets are maintained and kept up to date for each species/animal.

 

The Successful Applicant:

·      Exemplary hygiene standards. (E)

·      Preferable Relevant qualification (or working towards one). (E)

·      At least 1 year previous experience working with primates and/or nocturnal mammals in a zoological collection. (E)

·      Must be able to demonstrate up to date, taxa specific knowledge relevant to the animal collection and captive husbandry of the species that fall with the scope of this section.

·      Motivated and enthusiastic individual who can work alone and as part of a team. (E)

·      Good verbal and written communication skills. (E)

·      Good organizational and time management skills. (E)

·      Ability to work as a member of a team and go that extra mile. (E)

·      Computer literate. (D)

·      Wide knowledge of biology, ecology and captive requirements of taxa relevant to the collection. (D)

·      Flexible approach to work and ability to work under pressure. (E)

·      Full clean driving license is preferable but not essential.  (D)

Good understanding of health and safety within the workplace. (D (Training provided))

 

HOURS OF WORK & PAY

This is a permanent full time contract, on a flexi rota system which includes weekend working and bank holidays as well as sometimes working early or late to meet business needs.

The regular hours of work for this position are 8am – 5pm.

Rate of pay will be approx. £20-21,000 per annum dependent on experience.
