It’s an exciting time at SEA LIFE London Aquarium, as we are looking to recruit a Senior Curator to lead the curatorial team at one of Merlin’s most exciting, diverse, innovative and challenging attractions to deliver the highest standards of conservation, welfare and engagement.

 

We are looking for someone with the right balance of animal and people skills as gained through industry experience, as well as a champion of development and engagement with a proven history of incredible achievements within our field.

 

The Displays Curator at SEA LIFE London Aquarium is a fundamental part of the attraction’s senior team and assumes leadership for our incredible and talented bunch of aquarists across a variety of marine exhibits.

 

At the crux of this role is the ability to provide strategic oversight to the welfare and husbandry of the thousands of amazing creatures that call SEA LIFE London Aquarium home, as well as leading our product, technical and curatorial people strategies to continue to drive the aquarium to meet and exceed our ambitious goals.

This vacancy has been posted out to the many thousands who read the popular Zoo Jobs Blog Page and then on to the 129,400 plus followers of the  ZooNews Digest Facebook Page. It is then immediately forwarded on to Twitter and then to Pinterest and Linkedin (8,000+ connections). Many vacancies are shared to individuals and groups. In short your vacancy will have the potential of reaching something in the region of some 80,000 plus people within 24 hours. Keeper/Herpetologist




Keeper/Herpetologist

We are currently recruiting for a Keeper/Herpetologist to work in a team of 2 with an aquarist to run our rainforest zone at SEA LIFE London.

The successful candidate will be expected to drive the development and continued improvement if the terrestrial part of the exhibits and form a close team with the aquarist working on the aquatic side. Training will be providing in aquarium husbandry as well as part of extensive SEA LIFE training.

The rain forest exhibition includes a mixture of terrestrial species including crocodiles, spiders, snakes, assasin bugs, cockroaches, beetles and leafcutter ants alongside more aquarium fair like Piranha and Arowana. We are looking for someone to introduce new species and ideas to this area as well as drive the breeding/research and conservation of those species in the off show areas.
Depending on the experience of the success candidate for the role will recruited from assistant/trainee up to senior aquarist/keeper.

Right now we’re on the lookout for a Displays Supervisor in the South coast’s premier attraction to ensure we deliver amazing, immersive, safe experiences for our guests each and every day. At SEA LIFE Weymouth, a positive team spirit, entrepreneurial flare and hard work go hand in hand to make the Merlin magic happen!

About the role
In this role you will take responsibility for ensuring the continual development and innovation within the displays areas. Working with the Curator you will lead and motivate the team of Aquarists to undertake the vital day to day tasks involved in caring for over a thousand amazing creatures, as well as managing and supporting the team to achieve their own potential.
You’ll be responsible for the maintenance plans of the life support systems along with the cleanliness and presentation of our displays, always striving for world class! You will ensure suitable diets and feed plans are in place for our creatures, as well as continuing to develop our excellent animal welfare across the collection.
In addition to this, you’ll be given the opportunity to support in new exciting exhibit developments with a proactive focus on the correct care and attention to the quarantine and transportation process and implementation of policies and procedures that maximise the management of animal husbandry and innovation throughout the attraction.
This is a full time permanent role, working 5 days from 7 and as weekends and holiday periods are our busiest time this will include doing your fair share of weekends and bank holidays on a roster basis.

About you
You’ll be a dynamic, confident and a self-motivated individual; who will be an integral part of the team aiming for a centre of excellence in marine management, conservation and education. 
It goes without saying that you will have a robust knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry; and have the ability to communicate to all employees and customers, as well as delivering a highly immersive experience to all our visitors.
Using your experience gained through working in a similar environment, you will have the ability to engage the team to make innovative operational changes which evolve and continually improve our working practices. You’ll have a good understanding of zoo licensing process and requirements having been through a zoo licence in a previous role, some project management experience would be an advantage and ideally you’ll be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline.

We are currently recruiting for a Conservation and Learning and Discovery Manager for SEA LIFE (UK), based in Weymouth, Dorset. The key aspects of this role are to develop and implement the conservation and learning and discovery programs, which will add to and help deliver fun and entertaining experiences for our visitors, engage our staff, and underpin the SEA LIFE brand. These programs will also specifically support the attainment of SEA LIFE’s business goals, and proactively position SEA LIFE as a world-leader of aquatic animal displays through positive impacts in the natural world.

In partnership with key stakeholders you will assist in the development of the global strategy, and lead the implementation of the UK regional strategy, which will incorporate the building of SEA LIFE’s conservation, education and scientific research credentials through active and coordinated programming. This will include the development of meaningful metrics to monitor and ensure success, allowing SEA LIFE to demonstrate its impact in these areas, regionally and across the globe.

Duties will also include maintaining up-to-date records of the scale, scope and impacts of the conservation, education and research programs at each of the SEA LIFE sites across the UK, developing and providing relevant training for site-based staff, responding to needs and support the SEA LIFE Trust, the Board of Conscience and the Ethical Review Board. You will provide the SEA LIFE Head of Region (to whom you will report), Divisional Director, and associated regional managers with timely data and analyses.

We are looking for the following skills and experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or a related field
  • Proven experience developing, implementing and monitoring conservation, education and/or research programs in an informal science learning environment
  • The ability to motivate others remotely and in-person
  • Excellent influencing skills
  • The ability to multi-task, with high levels of independence, creativity and objectivity
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all levels
  • Highly organised with excellent attention to detail
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Able to prioritise and manage time effectively


This is a Full Time, permanent role and the hours of work are 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday; however, the need to be flexible is essential.

We are pleased to offer the exciting role of Senior Aquarist at Sea Life Great Yarmouth – a full time, salaried position on a 12 Month fixed term basis.

By joining us at the Sea Life Great Yarmouth as a Senior Aquarist you will be working with the Displays Supervisor and Curator in leading the team of Aquarists. You will help to care for the animals, as well as the life support systems that are so vital to their wellbeing. You will also play a vital role in maintaining the exhibits to the highest possible standards and ensuring that they surpass the expectations of our visitors. You will actively engage with visitors and communicate as an expert on matters arising around displays and the creatures or marine environment working with the rest of the displays teams to generate innovative ideas to enhance displays or husbandry.

Aquarist

We are SEA LIFE London Aquarium and we are part of the magical Merlin Entertainments!

We are currently recruiting for an Aquarist to join our Displays department. In this role you will you will play a vital part in caring for our animals, ensuring consistently high levels of animal health and welfare, as well as looking after and carrying out routine maintenance of the filtration and life support systems, crisis management equipment and environmental alarms, all of which are so crucial to their wellbeing. You will prepare suitable diets and feed for all livestock, as well as providing medication and treatment of animals under the direction of the Curator or Vet. Providing 24-hour alarm cover on a rota basis with other members of the displays team and maintaining strict codes of practice for the use, storage and record keeping of all medications and chemicals according to HSE, COSHH and veterinary regulations.

We are looking for the following skills and experience;
• Dynamic, confident & self-motivated
• Worked in a similar environment
• Strong knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry
• Able to work to tight deadlines and have flexibility around these
• Able to relate to all employees, clients and our millions of visitors each year!

This role is Full Time, Permanent, averaging 40 hours per week and will include weekends and bank holidays as required.
