The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park (AWCP) Gibraltar has a vacancy for an Experienced Animal Keeper to join our small, but dynamic team.

An exciting opportunity to help the AWCP to achieve its objectives: Excellent husbandry standards, partaking in conservation and awareness projects relevant to our collection and to provide excellent conservation education crearting local and wider community impacts.

Keepers are required to be involved in a full range of husbandry duties including general enclosure cleaning, food provisions, husbandry training, and enrichment programmes across all sections of the Park. Experience with enclosure furnishing and maintenance would be a distinct advantage. Keepers will also be encouraged to take on other important roles within the park.

The successful applicant must have previous experience employed within a zoo environment for at least 2 years. We are particularly interested in experience and passion for reptiles, amphibians and/or birds, but this is not essential.

The applicant must have excellent communication skills and able to communicate well with visitors and staff. In a small team attitude is everything, we are looking for a team player with an ability to work well with a range of people from different backgrounds. Reception duties and educational talks and tours are also a requirement. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic, personable and also have the ability to work independently.

Position requirements:

•    Full time; Permanent position

•    Reports to; Senior keeper & Manager

•    Hours; 37 hrs/wk, 9am-5pm. Includes weekend and Bank Holiday work on a rotated basis. Due to a small staff base, flexibility is required.

Roles and Responsibilities:

•    Carrying out and enforcing high standards of welfare and animal husbandry routines e.g. food    prep, feeding, cleaning, enrichment provision etc.

•    Undertake and record animal observations. ZIMS or ARKS experience would be desirable.

•    Deliver high standards of visitor interaction in the form of; keeper talks, experiences, tours and education and charity events.

•    Liaise and assist in general duties and requirements as directed by senior management

•    Other duties to support effective and efficient site maintenance may include: First Aider, supervising volunteer schedules and tasks, pruning, gardening and general cleaning in order to maintain high standards.

Applicant Requirements:

•    An animal science related qualification

•    2 years experience in a zoological collection preferable

•    Excellent communication skills

•    Adaptable for a flexible rota

•    Physically fit for the demands of this role

•    Full driving licence

Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park

An exciting opportunity to join our growing team and spend the winter in warmer climes at Gibraltar’s only wildlife park. The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is a small collection of exotic animals set in Gibraltar Botanic Gardens.

We currently have vacancies for 2 voluntary work experience placements for a period of 6-12 months (including a one month probationary period) beginning in November 2018. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with most of the animals in our collection and to gain a wide range of skills.

Candidates would be required to participate in the daily husbandry and daily routines of the animal department. This includes feeding animals, maintaining enclosures, daily record keeping and animal health checks. Assist keepers with the daily supervision of existing volunteers and participate in the training of new volunteers and work experience students.

You will also receive training to participate in keeper talks and park events. You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the different aspects of the Wildlife Park such as veterinary treatment, enrichment and record keeping.

Where suitable, there may also be opportunities for research projects to be undertaken.

• Preference will be given to applicants with an animal related qualification or working towards an animal related qualification
• Some experience within the zoo industry or with exotics would be desirable but not essential.
• Applicants should be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a willingness to learn new skills.
• Be physically fit for the demands of the post.

All placements are entirely voluntary and it is with regret that the Wildlife Park cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions.

Applicants will be responsible for funding all flights and accommodation during their stay. Assistance can be given to find accommodation nearby.

We are offering an opportunity for volunteers and work experience candidates to join our small, friendly team to enhance and gain valuable experience in animal management in a small zoo.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of species, assisting full time staff in all aspects of zoo life.

In order that as much experience is gained as possible and for you to get the most out of your time with us, we would prefer 3 months commitment or more.

The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is a small collection of exotic animals set in Gibraltar Botanic Gardens.
