Beale Wildlife Park is home to over 160 species, set in a 350 acre estate in an AONB on the banks of the river Thames. We're in an exciting time of development and progression and are growing our animal collection and expanding our offering of visitor engagement and education.

An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Living Collection Manager to join our team and become an integral part of the animal department leadership team, taking an active role in the planning and development of our expanding animal collection. Working directly under the Living Collections Manager you will cover a wide range of duties in addition to animal keeping, such as:

• Creating systems and procedures for improvement of the smooth running of the animal department
• Line managing animal team staff
• Assisting with new and existing enclosure design
• Contributing ideas for continuous development of the department and the collection
• Delivering Keeper Talks and Animal Experiences. 

You will help lead the team to evolve the animal department into a high performing, motivated and skilled team working to the highest standards of animal husbandry.

You will oversee the day to day running of the team, ensuring they adhere to all protocols, signing off work, mentoring and ensuring a safe environment for our animals, staff and visitors. 

You will be passionate about animals and looking to put your stamp and creativity on a newly created role. You'll bring your knowledge, experience and can do attitude to improve and develop the animal collection in a park with huge potential. 

We're looking for someone with a minimum of 6 years Zoo Keeper experience who holds the Diploma in the Management of Zoo Animals and Aquaria or an equivalent qualification. You will be competent and confident in managing staff, delegating, supervising, motivating and managing performance as well as setting high standards and creating protocols and best practice for animal husbandry.

This is a full time, permanent position with accommodation available if needed. Salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience.

An opportunity has arisen for 2 x new Lead Keepers to join our team and contribute to the planning and development of our expanding animal collection. Working under the Assistant Living Collections Manager you will cover a wide range of duties in addition to animal keeping, such as:

 

Contributing to systems and procedures for improvement of the smooth running of the animal department

Line managing junior staff

Assisting with new and existing enclosure design

Contributing ideas for continuous development of the department and the collection

Delivering Keeper Talks and Animal Experiences.

You will work form part of the new senior animal team to evolve the animal department into a high performing, motivated and skilled team working to the highest standards of animal husbandry.

 

You will oversee the day to day running of your section, including junior staff, ensuring they adhere to all protocols, signing off work, mentoring and ensuring a safe environment for our animals, staff and visitors.

Assistant Curator of Birds and Mammals

Job Summary:

A unique position has arisen within our small team of animal keeping staff. We are looking for a keen, passionate and enthusiastic person to join our team as Assistant Curator of Birds and Mammals. They will aid the Curator of Birds and Mammals in all duties and will take a lead role within the Park.

Location: Beale Park is part of the Child Beale Trust, a registered charity. The Park itself is set in 38-acres within a 300-acre country estate in the idyllic Berkshire countryside alongside the River Thames.

Hours of work: This is a permanent full-time position working 40 hours a week over 7 days on a rota basis which will require some weekends and bank holidays.

Responsibilities and Duties:

·        To maintain a high standard of husbandry care of all bird enclosures, public viewing areas and off show exhibits.

·        To prepare and feed aviary section and cover other sections when required due to days off, holiday, illnesses etc.

·        To encourage the reproduction of animals within our collection plan

·        To provide additional animal care if needed such as incubation, hand-rearing and extra care for sick individuals.

·        To provide accurate and up-to-date paper records of behaviours, reproduction, births, deaths, and movements of individuals to be given to the animal registrar.

·        To be confident with capturing and restraining of all animals within our collection.

·        To be responsible for the correct identification methods such as ringing and ID chips within all sections

·        To provide assistance, training, and supervision of volunteers, work experience and staff.

·        To be confident in public engagement activities and answering queries from members of the public.

Skills and Qualifications:

·        Full clean driving licence

·        Previous experience as section head of birds or similar is essential and must have worked in the environment for a minimum of 8 years.

·        Extensive knowledge of avicultural, husbandry, diet and reproduction.

·        A good understanding of conservation and education in the modern zoo environment.

·        A good level of health and fitness to carry out a heavy workload.

·        Must be able to aid in construction work for existing and new exhibits.

·        DMZAA or equivalent is preferred but not essential.

·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·        Computer literate

·        Good organisational and time management skills

·        Ability to work within a team and also use one’s own initiative.

Full Time Keeper - Beale Park

Full Time Keeper - Beale Park

A position has become available for a full time keeper.

Working as part of a small team, a minimum of three years experience is required with at least one of those working with Marmosets, Tamarins and Squirrel Monkeys. Experience with a wide range of mammals and birds is also advantageous.

The successful applicant will need to be highly motivated, working either in a team or on their own, and have the ability and enthusiasm to help carry the collection forward.

Applicants need not hold the Zoo Animal Management qualification but will be assisted in obtaining it at a later date if required.
