Experienced Senior Keeper – Elephant Section

 

Full time – 40 hours per week (annualised)

We are looking for an Experienced Senior Keeper to join our Elephant team and assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of our elephants as well as other species  currently cared for by the department.

Our new elephant facility ‘Project Elephant Basecamp’ was completed in 2018 and now houses six Asian elephants, all managed in protected contact. More details of our facility can be found here https://projectelephant.org.uk/care/basecamp

The successful applicant will be a proven team player with a good knowledge of the zoological industry and an understanding of the requirements needed to maintain and continuously improve the husbandry and welfare of the animal species under their care. You will be required to work with all species on your section in a safe and secure manner and will have excellent training skills using positive reinforcement methods.

As a senior keeper you may be expected to oversee and supervise other staff members and on occasions manage the section in the absence of the Section Manager and Deputy Section Manager, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to progress in their career.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent qualification and have a minimum of five years keeping experience, a full valid driving licence is also essential.

Previous experience supervising staff and working with elephants in a protected contact environment is essential, adhering to EAZA/BIAZA/DEFRA guidelines. Experience working with a range of other category 1 animals is desirable.

The salary for this position is £24,000 per annum

Animal Keeper

Permanent – Full Time – 40 hours per week (annualised)

 

As part of an exciting new restructuring programme within the Animal Department at Blackpool Zoo, we are looking for an Animal Keeper to join our team, working primarily on our mammal team, the successful candidate will join our existing team of keepers assisting in the daily care & husbandry needs of our animals. The zoo houses a wide range of mammal species and the successful candidate will have experience caring for a variety of mammal taxa.

 

You will have a minimum of 3 years working in a recognised zoological  institution and the DMZAA course or an equivalent qualification is essential. You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable.

You will be required to work with all species on your section in a safe and secure manner and will have excellent training and presentation skills using positive reinforcement methods.

As a senior keeper you may be expected to oversee and supervise other staff members and on occasions manage the section in the absence of the Section Manager and Deputy Section Manager, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to progress in their career.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of five years keeping experience, a full valid driving licence is also essential.

Previous experience supervising staff is essential and applicants should have significant experience working with several avian taxonomic groups and pinnipeds.

Deputy Section Manager - Mammals (including Apes)

 

Full time – 40 hours per week (annualised)

As part of an exciting new restructuring programme within the Animal Department at Blackpool Zoo, we are looking for a Deputy Section Manager to join our Mammal team and assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of a wide range of species currently maintained in our collection.

The successful applicant will be a proven team player with an excellent knowledge of the zoological industry and the requirements needed to maintain and continuously improve the husbandry and welfare of the animal species under their care. You will be required to work with all species on your section in a safe and secure manner and will have excellent training skills using positive reinforcement methods.

As a Deputy Section Manager, you will assist the Section Manager in supervising seven other animal keepers that report into this position, you will also manage the department in the absence of the Section Manager, reporting directly to the Animal Manager in their absence.

In addition to excellent husbandry skills, candidates should already have experience of staff management as this is essential to this role, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to progress in their career.

You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic, and reliable. You should possess the Diploma in The Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) or an equivalent and have a minimum of seven years keeping experience, a full valid driving licence is also essential. Previous experience supervising staff and working with a range of category 1 animals including apes is essential.

Shared single accommodation may be available for the successful candidate.

The salary for this position is £27,000 per annum
