Animal Keeper

Animal Keeper

Natureland Wildlife Trust

 Tahunanui NZ

Permanent, full-time position

Natureland Wildlife Trust is an outwardly focused community-based zoo and conservation centre based in Sunny Nelson.  We are proud to be a safe, affordable, and accessible place for families to engage with animals and bring the wild into Nelson. Located in picturesque Tahunanui, we see our space as a platform for not only our work, but also as a way to share stories about the work that other people and groups are engaged in to save wildlife.

We have a couple of exciting career opportunities for competent keepers to join our fabulous team. Ideally, we are looking for at least one full-time keeper, however, we would be interested in hearing from suitably qualified applicants who would prefer part-time and/or casual hours.  Our ideal candidates will have a minimum of one year’s experience in animal husbandry with a variety of taxon and a NZ certificate in Animal Management (Captive Wild Animals), and/or tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline.   You will be passionate and enthusiastic about working with a range of exotic, NZ native and domestic animals.  Experience and knowledge of captive breeding with native New Zealand birds is highly advantageous.

We have a small but close knit and friendly team who take pride in ensuring that our positive standards of animal welfare are maintained.  In a typical day your role would include the care of the animals and their habitats, including some grounds-work and landscaping inside enclosures and around the park. Participating in our conservation efforts including breed for release, keeping ZIMS records up to date, and providing engaging, educational visitor encounters are also essential elements of the role.  This is a physically demanding role so you need to be fit and able to lift up to 20kg with ease.

Alongside excellent communication skills, time management and prioritizing skills, our new team member/s will have a good sense of humour and enjoy working as part of a flexible, hardworking team.  You will also be happy to share the load when it comes to weekend shifts.  Nelson Tasman is a fantastic place to work, live and play.  Surrounded by three national parks, we have an abundance of outdoor activities which makes for an active lifestyle with great work/life balance.

Check out what the region has to offer at www.nelsontasman.nz.
