The Role

Displays developments provide quarantined livestock for the whole of the SEA LIFE group. A key objective of the role is to design and implement a breeding strategy to allow SEA LIFE to become self sufficient in key animals. This will involve project managing a major development of the breeding facilities. Conservation issues in the wild need to underpin the breeding programs. It will be important to establish and drive both local and international conservation links.

You will need to communicate with heads of displays from all sites to support them in achieving amazing displays of seahorses, jellyfish and octopus. This will involve visiting some sites at key times and providing training and expertise’s.

The role will also include the innovation of new creatures and displays, managing the process throughout, from initial concept through to public display. Experience in at least small scale project management is essential.

The Person

Working with diverse creatures ranging from Leafy Sea Dragons to Giant Pacific Octopus, you will need to be extremely adaptable. Training and mentoring will be provided with the position but we are looking for an individual who is a self starter that can lead a team with a real passion for the subject.

The position will involve travel and research and you will represent SEA LIFE through professional presentations at relevant conferences. With at least 3 years proven fish husbandry experience, you must be confident and competent to give husbandry, health and breeding advice to the SEA LIFE Aquariums.

Fota Wildlife Park, part of the Zoological Society of Ireland is located on 60 acres at Fota island 10Km east of Cork City. With annual attendance in excess of 350,000 visitors, Fota Wildlife Park is a conservation, education and recreational facility where animals are maintained in open natural habitats. The Wildlife Park has made considerable investment in the past year upgrading its infrastructure and is currently engaged in a program to develop another 27 acres which will focus on Asian animals and plants.

We are currently recruiting a suitably experienced and qualified Warden to work as part of our animal team. Experience working with varied taxa of Birds, Primates, Herbivores, and Carnivores would be advantageous.

The successful applicant should be highly motivated, working in a team or on their own, with good communication, observation and organisational skills and the ability to accept direction. The position will report directly to the Assistant Head Warden, Head Warden and Operations Manager.

The successful candidate should be qualified in an appropriate animal, biological or conservation discipline and have one year working experience in wild animal husbandry.

Position Description: As the Veterinary Nurse, you will have the primary responsibility of the cleaning, care and rehabilitation of sick or injured Accession animals within the hospital. You will assist the Veterinarian with procedures and also the Hospital General Manager and Senior Nurse when required. The Australian Wildlife Hospital is dedicated to the highest standard of animal welfare possible. Compassion and a commitment to conservation are an important part of this role.

Your duties include:

• Maintain the highest standard of animal welfare.
• Maintain cleaning and maintenance of all the animal enclosures.
• Ensure the hygiene of the enclosures and hospital is held at a high level.
• Undertake quarantine procedures.
• Conduct environment and enclosure safety checks.
• Meets medication requirements of patients as directed by Veterinarians
• Meets cleaning and Maintenance requirements of animal enclosures (outside koalas are generally cared for by the Volunteer Coordinator, however assistance maybe required from time to time).
• Prepare food and conduct feeding of animals in accordance with diet requirements, feeding schedules and procedures.
• Organise intensive care and external enclosures. Placement of koalas should be based on dominance / submissiveness, placement of other males/females, injuries etc. Contact supervisor is unsure.
• Keep and maintain Veterinarian Nurse Day book.
• Follow the Radiation safety and protection plan.
• Undertake and assist in wildlife rescues.
• Conduct public education on wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
• Maintain and ensure a commitment to privacy and confidentiality.
• Liaise with Zookeepers and wildlife carers and rescuers.
• Maintain security procedures.
• Maintain restricted drug book.
• Establish a relationship with Carers and their animals.
• Provide a high standard of customer service and publicity.
• Work within the guidelines of health and safety procedures to ensure both animals, personal and visitor security.
• Supervision of work experience students and volunteers.
• Keep up to date with all areas of Veterinarian nursing and wildlife care.
• Participate in performance training and development reviews or programs as requested by the company both on and off the job.
• Attend meetings as request by the Hospital General Manager and Senior Nurse.

Weekend availability and own transport are essential.

This position will include night shifts.

General Curator - Twycross Zoo

General Curator, Animal Department

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world.

A position has become available for an additional Curator to run and advance the Animal Department as part of the development of the Life Sciences Directorate. This role provides a unique opportunity to join the Zoo at a time when it is undergoing an exciting period of change. You will join the other General Curator in managing the Animal Department and reporting to the Director of Life Sciences.

The successful candidate will have the vision to develop a world class animal department in conjunction with the other General Curator, Head of Veterinary Services, Director of Life Sciences and Zoo Chief Executive. The post holder will also be expected to have input to the design of new enclosures and become an active member of the Life Sciences team.

Applicants must have a proven track record at a recognized zoological collection, preferably with experience of EEP, TAG or other relevant areas of zoological conservation work and best practice, especially with primates. They must possess good all round animal husbandry skills and be able to lead and motivate a team. A scientific background would also be desirable. A proactive and positive approach together with good communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern zoo is essential.

The role is full time, 40 hours per week, with weekend duties shared amongst the curators and extra hours as required. Salary commensurate with experience.

Primate Keeper

Primate Keeper at Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary, Looe, Cornwall

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for up to three people to join an experienced team of primate carers at a highly respected primate sanctuary. Public speaking, practical skills and a passion and empathy for our fellow primates are some of the skills, interests and qualities being sought.

For at least one of the roles, strong practical skills are desirable to aid enclosure enrichment and maintenance as well as contributing to management of the Sanctuary grounds and gardens. One of the keeper roles will also have an education focus.

Candidates will be formally interviewed for these positions and selected according to demonstrated ability to fulfil the following:

Primary Responsibilities

To become a member of the Primate Welfare Team at Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary. You will be aware of and have a commitment to the aims of Wild Futures. You will learn to distinguish individual monkeys and to show a sensitivity towards them which indicates your suitability as a keeper. Under the supervision of experienced staff you will be trained to become one of the monkeys' primary caregivers.

Daily duties include: cleaning and enriching enclosures, helping with the rehabilitation and socialisation of the primates, preparing and distributing food and medication; all whilst monitoring the health and well-being of the monkeys in your care. You will be responsible for maintaining daily up-to date information on the status and wellbeing of each individual through a computer database.

You will also: learn about general primate healthcare, assist in keeping up to date with the latest research in primate healthcare and welfare, participate in all aspects of a monkey’s veterinary visit, upkeep and ordering of medication, help with enclosure maintenance. You will help co-ordinate and train volunteers and carry out other tasks that are essential to the day to day running of the Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary is open to the public for seven months of the year. You will be required to educate visitors and other groups, via public talks and workshops, about the individual primates in our care, about primates in the wild and the problems that they face in captivity, about the conservation of primates, and about the history and ethos of Wild Futures and the Monkey Sanctuary. You will also be asked to help at the admissions desk, as the need arises.

Other responsibilities

You will also:

Share responsibility for tasks essential to the running of the Sanctuary (such as cleaning public toilets, doing the weekly shopping trip) via a rota system.

Be expected to develop and maintain good communications with all team members and to demonstrate a good sense of humour!

Need to show that you can be flexible in your work, adapting to new situations as they arise and you will be able to prioritise work according to tasks you have been given (with monkey care taking priority).

Be expected to work five full days a week plus up to two nights ‘cover’ (overnight responsibility), and to be flexible about your days off.

You will have an allowance of thirty days annual leave per annum. Must be flexible about annual leave and willing to work on bank holidays.

Salary £13,000 per annum gross.

Twycross Zoo

£15,104 to £17,300 pa

Twycross Zoo is in Leicestershire, a registered charity and home to over a thousand animals of 250 different species. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can. We have recently opened our new Sri Lankan themed elephant experience ‘Uda Walawe’ which incorporates sand and grass paddocks, as well as a large pool. We have also completed improvements to the indoor stabling so as to provide a sand floor. Our current herd consists of 1.4 Asian elephants, including a young bull born in 2009 as a result of AI. We continue to support AI and research projects.

We currently have a vacancy for a new Keeper to become the 5th person in our elephant team. We have a close contact approach to elephant management and train them to obey commands in a calm and consistent manner, enabling healthcare maintenance to be carried out. The correct candidate will be required to:

• Supervise and develop staff (depending on grade)
• Demonstrate that they have either attained a relevant animal management qualification or be prepared to take the Advanced National Certificate for the Management of Zoo Animals
• Have good communication skills and be able to communicate with visitors on either a one-to-one basis or presenting to a larger audience
• Have a flexible work attitude
• Work as part of a progressive thinking team

Full training will be given as required, as required. However, applicants must have experience as a professional animal keeper, although not necessarily with elephants.

Pay ranges from £290.46 pw (£15,104 pa) for a Trainee Keeper up to £332.69 pw (£17,300 pa) for a Senior Keeper. Grade is determined by the job holder’s level of competence, expertise and knowledge, not length of service at the Zoo. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday, 5% employer’s pension contribution and the possibility of on-site accommodation.
