Wingham Wildlife Park is a family run wildlife park with big emphasis on animal husbandry, conservation, education and safety for our animals, staff and visitors. We are looking for a like minded “team player” who would fit in amongst our birds and mammals section. This section covers a large variety of species ranging from Red Pandas, Tapirs, Lorikeets, Rodents, Hoof stock, Penguins and many more.

The Candidate Will:

•        Be able to communicate on a one-to-one basis as well as leading public talks to large crowds.

•        Have experience working with exotic species, preferably in a zoo setting.

•        Be able to work as part of a team and on their own.

•        Have exceptional time keeping skills.

•        Show good practical animal husbandry skills.

•        Have relevant animal husbandry qualifications.

•        Have a valid UK driving licence or have good access to transport links.

The Role Involves:

•        Day to day husbandry of animals in our park.

•        Good observational and note keeping skills when working with the animals at the park.

•        Giving talks to visitors about some of the species in the park.

•        Strict adherence to safe working practices.

•        Maintaining high standards around the park including emptying bins, weeding and window cleaning.

About Employment with WWP:

This full time position (winter; 40 hours per week, summer; 45 hours per week) requires people to be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including working on weekends, during school holidays and on bank holidays.

We give statutory holiday entitlement.

This position will pay at the rate of the national minimum wage. On the successful completion of a 6 month probationary period a wage increase will occur.

Chester Zoo is an international conservation organisation operating the UK’s largest and most popular zoo, as well as many wildlife conservation and research projects around the world. To help us in our mission to conserve biodiversity worldwide, we are recruiting a South Asia Programmes Coordinator to join our diverse team of conservation scientists.

The Field Programme Coordinator will manage our portfolio of projects in South Asia and southern China. Working with various departments within the zoo as well as our field teams overseas, they will manage our Assam Haathi Project (India) and Living with Tigers Project (Nepal), both of which focus on community-based human-wildlife conflict mitigation. This entails working closely with the in-country Project Managers who oversee field operations with up to 20 field staff around multiple project sites. They will also act as the zoo’s focal liaison for our conservation activities for the region, which includes several smaller partnership projects as well. The day-to-day tasks revolve around general project management, monitoring and evaluation, report and proposal writing, liaising with our development, marketing and PR teams, and spending time overseas with the field teams on the ground as needed.

Candidates should hold a PhD in a conservation-related topic, with around 5-10 years of experience working in conservation projects in developing countries, preferably in South Asia. Very good knowledge of conservation social sciences, including stakeholder dialogue, livelihoods, and social marketing will be essential, as these projects mostly take a people-centred approach to solving conservation problems. The candidate must have outstanding project management skills, including planning and design, and coordination of teams and budgets while working to deadlines and targets. Experience with monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment is important. The candidate should also demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills, and experience working in multicultural teams. 

Although based in the UK at Chester Zoo, this position will require frequent travel to India and Nepal, and other parts of Asia including southern China. The salary is £30,832 per year and the position reports to the Head of Conservation Science.

The post holder will work under the direction of the Animal Management Centre (AMC) Manager in undertaking the management and daily husbandry of their area of specialism.  There are 2 Technician vacancies that we are recruiting for based in the following areas:

Working with instructors, the post holder will provide practical support, and supervision to students in practical subjects both on an individual and group basis, ensuring provision is learner focused, to achieve exemplary standards in animal welfare, teaching and customer service.

Candidates should be educated to at least level 2 in a relevant vocational subject and be able to demonstrate significant professional experience working with a range of either reptile and amphibian species or mammal species, preferably in an accredited zoo or similar establishment. A flexible approach to a varied workload with a real enthusiasm for the animals you will be working with along with some teaching or supervisory experience would be advantageous.

This post is based at the Sparsholt campus. The college is a full BIAZA member and holds extensive collections of these taxa with many species of conservation concern.

As a member of the Living Collection’s team, the successful candidates will be required to perform all duties to ensure the smooth running of the relevant section at Edinburgh Zoo, aiming to optimise, where necessary in conjunction with other departments, the quality of animal welfare and visitor experience.  We are welcoming applications from candidates interested in both the qualified and trainee level roles.

About You

To operate effectively in this role, it is desirable if you hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals or equivalent qualification, although applicants without this will also be considered. Practical experience in a zoo or animal-related environment is also desirable and experience of working with a range of animal taxon groups would be advantageous however if already qualified experience of working with birds would be particularly beneficial. You should also have up-to-date basic knowledge and understanding of zoo legislation and best practice, along with a sound basis of practical knowledge and skills about good animal management including dietary knowledge. Proven success in animal training or an appropriate qualification in the use of positive reinforcement training would be beneficial.

Post A is a 20 week fixed term position in the first instance.  Working hours are 35 hours per week.  The successful candidates must be able to work weekends.

Post B is a 6 month Fixed Term position.  Working hours are 14 hours per week. The successful candidate must be able to work weekends.

Capel Manor College is London’s only Specialist College for land-based studies and an internationally renowned learning resource for all those interested in Horticulture, Animal Management, Saddlery, Arboriculture, Floristry, Garden Design, Countryside and the Environment. Our aim is to ensure our staff enjoy coming to work, not only because they can make a difference to the communities the college serve, but because the College provides them with a great place to work.

The College are currently looking for an Animal Care Instructor to provide instruction and demonstrations to students on a wide range of subjects relating to animal care. The role will also involve supporting and resourcing the teaching of animal care including maintaining practical facilities. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

•        The day-to-day routine care of the College’s animal stock to include cleaning out of accommodation, provision of feed, water, bedding, nesting material, and daily health checks

•        Providing demonstrations and technical instruction to students undertaking practical animal care from entry level to level 3 and HE

•        Carrying out practical assessments of students in line with awarding body requirements completing all necessary records

•        Supervising and allocating tasks for college students carrying out practical duties in animal areas

•        Complete records relating to routine animal care, reporting any abnormalities or problems to Supervisor/Line Manager as appropriate

•        Ordering feed, bedding and other consumables as required in consultation with Line Manager.  Storage, security and stock control of such consumables

•        Ensuring high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in all animal areas and associated storage and service areas

•        The exercising, training and handling of animal stock as appropriate and as required

•        Ensuring health and safety of students is maintained whilst undertaking practical sessions

The postholder will be required to be available “on-call” over specified periods by arrangement with the Line Manager to ensure that the welfare of the college’s animal stock is not compromised. Time off In Lieu/payment will be agreed as appropriate.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual, with excellent time management and organisation skills. You will have a professional approach, flexibility, responsiveness, enthusiasm and commitment to achieving high standards and deadlines.

Required Skills and Experience:

•        Experience of caring for a range of rodents, reptiles, birds and farm-stock on a day-to-day basis

•        Level 3 qualification or higher in an animal care discipline e.g. City & Guilds or BTEC Diploma / Extended Diploma

•        Teaching Qualification e.g. PTLLS, DTLLS or willingness to obtain

•        Knowledge of correct hygiene and cleaning procedures for Animal Unit and associated areas

•        An understanding and compliance with current legislation, including Diversity and Equality and Safeguarding

•        Commitment to inclusive and comprehensive educational provision

Flamingo Land zoological department is looking for a zookeeper to join our team.  Flamingo Land is one of the leading tourist attractions in the UK, attracting more than 1.4 million visitors each year.  The zoo currently has over 130 species across a range of different taxa.  We have an active education department, our own research institute (in collaboration with the University of York) and an award winning conservation project in Tanzania.  The zoo is also a member of BIAZA, EAZA and WAZA.

Experienced Zookeeper

The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on a variety of different sections within the zoo, including Children’s Planet (small carnivores and reptiles), the bird section, the primate section and large carnivores.  There may also be an opportunity to be trained on other animal sections within the zoo.  All of our zookeepers are encouraged to participate in a range of activities which include research, environmental enrichment and education.  The successful candidate must have relevant experience of working in a zoological collection and have passed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or equivalent).  Experience with any of the above mentioned taxa would be an advantage, but you will receive direct training in the husbandry of these taxa. The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors, including delivering public talks. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic and a good team player.

VETERINARY NURSE

The Animal Health department requires an individual who will use their qualification/s and skills to fulfil this vital role.

The Responsibilities will include:

· Assistance to the veterinary team with animal procedures, surgeries, examinations and routine health walks including the preparation process thereof.

· Animal treatment and monitoring: To ensure that prescribed treatment is issued where necessary and follow up treatment/s adhered to. This includes and is not limited to the dispensing, administering of such treatment and the recording of changes in treatment and medical condition/s of the treated animals.

· Sample management: Ensuring the accurate submission, processing and capturing of samples to in-house and outside laboratories and the receiving of related reports.

· Pharmacy management: Stringent monitoring and control of stock ensuring that an adequate supply is readily available.

· Animal Health Clinic and Laboratory upkeep: Ensuring that consumables are stocked in a systematic manner and that equipment is maintained and is in good working order. Ensuring a high standard of hygiene in the clinic and laboratory.

· Medical data control: Ensure that veterinary data is stored appropriately on the relevant database and provide assistance in communicating the findings of such reports.

Requirements:

· Minimum tertiary qualification: Diploma Veterinary Nurse (Dip. Vet. Nur.) Or related qualification.

· Proven display of conservation ethics.

Personal skills/attributes:

· Excellent communication skills.

· Attention to detail.

· Ability to use own initiative.
