This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced manager to transform, lead and position a small independent zoo into a recognised and respected zoological charity through its next phase of development.

The Council of Trustees seeks an exceptional strategic leader with hands on proven management skills to provide direction and focus for the senior management team and its dedicated staff. The new CEO will be responsible for developing excellent working relationships with all stakeholders and for increasing revenues, driving change and continuous quality improvement.

A track record of significant achievement in either the business, public or not-for-profit sectors is essential. Visitor attraction/zoological experience desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and will have proven skills in business development particularly retail and catering, strategic planning and implementation, change management, HR and income generation at leadership level. You will have a proven knowledge of legacy and fundraising streams and sound financial management. You will also be an effective team leader with boundless energy, drive and passion to make things happen. It is crucial that you have a strong empathy with the aims and objectives of the Trust.

Work experience placements

Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park

Gibraltar

The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is a small collection of exotic animals set in Gibraltar Botanic Gardens.

We currently have vacancies for voluntary work experience placements for a period of 6-12 months (including a one month probationary period) beginning in April/May 2018. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with most of the animals in our collection and to gain a wide range of skills.

Objectives of the placement:

• To participate in the daily husbandry and daily routines of the animal department. This includes feeding animals, maintaining enclosures, daily record keeping and animal health checks.
• Assist keepers with the daily supervision of existing volunteers and participate in the training of new volunteers and work experience students.
• You will also receive training to participate in keeper talks and park events.
• You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the different aspects of the Wildlife Park such as veterinary treatment, enrichment and record keeping.
• Where suitable, there may also be opportunities for research projects to be undertaken.

Required skills:

• Preference will be given to applicants with an animal related qualification or working towards an animal related qualification
• Some experience within the zoo industry or with exotics would be desirable but not essential.
• Applicants should be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a willingness to learn new skills.
• Be physically fit for the demands of the post.
• All placements are entirely voluntary and as such it is with regret that the Wildlife Park cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions.

Applicants will be responsible for funding all flights and accommodation during their stay.

Animal Presenter (30 hours)

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Animal Presenter to work within the Living Collections team at Edinburgh Zoo. This physical hands-on role in a busy zoological park will involve bending and lifting, feeding, cleaning, maintaining and presenting the enclosures and general care and welfare of the animals and associated tasks, including record keeping. The successful candidate will be required to deliver public engagement activities such as the Keeper Experience program, the daily talks programme, shows and animal encounters to a high standard and in a fun and engaging way meeting the needs of our visitors whilst ensuring high animal welfare and the delivery of our key messages.

Who we are looking for

To operate effectively in this role, it is essential you hold the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals or equivalent qualification. Practical experience in a zoo or animal-related environment is also essential and experience of working with a range of animal taxon groups would be advantageous. You should also have up-to-date basic knowledge and understanding of zoo legislation and best practice, along with a sound basis of practical knowledge and skills about good animal management including dietary knowledge. Proven success in animal training or an appropriate qualification in the use of positive reinforcement training would be beneficial.

You will be an excellent communicator, with strong presentation skills. You will be comfortable working as part of a team and will build effective relationships across the organisation. Customer service will be key to this role and you must have an excellent understanding of the principals involved and how to interact with the public to ensure a memorable experience.

This is a part time permanent position working 30 hours per week.  The successful candidate must be able to work weekends.

a part-time (35 hours per week) fixed-term contract until the end of December 2018

These are fixed term contracts, starting with immediate effect until 31 December 2018.  The successful candidates must be able to work weekends.

An opening has arisen for an experienced Keeper in our Lower Vertebrate and Invertebrate (LVI) Department at Paignton Zoo. The role involves the day-to-day husbandry of a large and diverse collection of reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates, focusing on animal welfare, bio-security, water quality, record keeping and ensuring that exhibits are maintained to the highest standards.

You will have at least 4 years’ relevant experience or have 2 years experience and have completed the DMZAA course or equivalent qualification.

The successful candidate will:

• Be able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of current herpetological  husbandry practices.  We are looking for proven experience in the successful husbandry of reptiles/amphibians/fish and invertebrates.

• Have high standards of record keeping and best husbandry practices.

• Have prior experience working with aquatic systems.

• Have a logical, precise and scientific approach to animal keeping is required.

• Understand the conservation, research and educational role of ex-situ animal populations.

• Be proficient in Microsoft software including Outlook, Excel and Word.

• Be reliable with good time keeping and attendance and able to demonstrate professionalism.
