We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Animal Trainer and Presenter to join our team.

The successful candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate animal training experience relevant to the zoo’s Bird of Prey and Amazing Animal displays and be familiar with positive operant conditioning. In addition to this, and a key requirement for the role, are excellent communication and public presentation skills.

Working under the direction of the Head of Animal Training and Presentations, you will already have at least 1 years’ experience working with and training exotic animals and your previous experience will complement the already high standard of training and presentation achieved by the department. An animal care related qualification/s would be an advantage but more important is the desire to interact both formally and informally with our guests at every opportunity, providing an additional educational experience that enhances their visit.

Salary is dependent on experience. This is a full time position (based on an average 40 hr week), some weekend working is required and there is no accommodation available with this position.

A great opportunity has arisen for a Nutritionist to join our team on a fixed term basis, providing maternity leave cover for up to 1 year. This is a part time post working 20 hours per week over 2.5 days. 

The successful post-holder will continue the development of animal nutrition at Marwell in conjunction with the Animal Welfare Advisor and provide day to day animal nutrition advice, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare through appropriate diet selection, presentation and the monitoring of animals. 

The successful candidate will have a Degree or equivalent in Zoology or another applicable discipline. A comprehensive knowledge of all taxonomic groups is essential. An understanding of zoo feeding practices would be advantageous. 

Applicants must have clear and effective written and oral communication skills and be highly organised with the ability to meet numerous demands working to tight deadlines. Applicants must be IT literate with good Word and Excel skills.

About our Aquarium

In the heart of Bristol located on the Harbourside, our Aquarium hosts our largest display of native species themed around a sunken ship.  Other displays include an amazing underwater walkthrough tunnel which includes exotic species.  Bristol Aquarium is also unique in that it is the UKs only aquarium with its own ‘Urban Jungle’ - a large botanical house home to an array of plant species as well as Coral Sea display which is home to a number of species of sharks and rays.

About The Role

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Zoological Team through a hands on approach.  You will take responsibility for ensuring the continual development and innovation within the displays areas, leading the delivery of consistently high standards of animal husbandry and displays throughout the management, organisation and continued development of the team.   

About you

It is essential that you have previous experience of aquarium curatorial work, covering a broad range of species and aquarium systems.  Your experience and knowledge will be sufficient to allow you to work autonomously.  You will have a flexible approach and positive outlook, with the ability to work without supervision and to respond effectively under pressure.

Zoo Presenter (part-time, seasonal) 

We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic Presenter, to deliver high-quality, positive and engaging communications on conservation and biodiversity issues for all ages - to enable audiences to understand why biodiversity matters, improve their understanding of the role of environmental parks in conservation and to motivate and empower them to take action to conserve biodiversity. 

The successful candidate will deliver presentations to all visitors, adjusting to specific audience needs;  initiate and run short activities with visitors and educational groups; assist delivery of out of school hours activities e.g. clubs and summer schools; and evaluate and modify presentations and activities. 

Applicants should possess GCSE Science and/or Geography and have worked in a conservation- or education-based environment.  You will also have demonstrable enthusiasm for communicating conservation and biodiversity issues and experience of engaging face-to-face with children and adults of all ages and levels of interest. 

Based at Paignton Zoo, this is a part-time seasonal post for an average 20 hrs per week, spread across 4-5 days (including weekends and Bank Holidays), at £7.83 per hr.   Contracted seasonal hours during 2016 run until Sunday 4th September, although there may be the opportunity of a permanent post beyond this period.  The successful applicant will also be expected to deliver presentations at Living Coasts, if required.

 The Living Rainforest currently has a vacancy for a Senior Keeper within the Animal Department.

Trust for Sustainable Living is a registered charity based near Newbury, Berkshire. At our visitor centre, The Living Rainforest, the animal collection is contained within two tropical glasshouses and consists of more than 60 species. These include callitrichids, toucans and turacos, snakes, chelonian, stingrays, dendrobatids, and invertebrates.

The Role:

·         This is primarily a hands on, practical role, working with a diverse range of tropical animals from all taxa and reporting directly to the Animal Curator. You will be expected to effectively manage both your time and that of the rest of the department in order to meet daily, weekly and monthly goals.

·         You will be expected to assist with record keeping, diet assessments, welfare audits, medical treatment, collection planning, enclosure construction, informal education, research projects, health and safety assessments and much more in this diverse role.

·         This role will also involve providing support to the Animal Curator with regards to collection planning and maintenance, husbandry policy and legislation requirements. Therefore you are expected to have good understanding of Zoo licensing and associated legislation.

·         You will assist in the supervision and training of Junior Keepers, volunteers and work experience students to ensure consistently high standards. You should have experience of managing a small team and teaching relevant skills.

·         Public education is important to The Living Rainforest therefore you will be trained as a tour guide and will be required to undertake some school tour guiding and keeper talks.

·         The job is physically demanding and will involve some heavy lifting and some construction and maintenance work. Therefore you should be physically fit. Practical experience of enclosure planning and construction will be useful, but is not essential as training will be provided.

·         The Living Rainforest is continuing to increase our involvement with the BIAZA working groups and other external institutions. We hope to provide opportunities to attend meetings and training sessions, and will be supportive of staff contributions to research, articles for publication, or other projects, providing that they are relevant to our collection and staff time is available.

·         Working hours are approximately 9.00 – 5.30pm five days per week on a rota’d basis. Some weekend and bank holiday work will be required.

·         Salary will be commensurate with level of experience, between £16 – 18k per annum. The holiday allowance is 20 days per annum plus bank holidays. TSL participates in a group stakeholder pension scheme.

·         Accommodation and transport are not provided with this post.

·         Applicants should have an animal related qualification at Level 4 or above.

·         Experience of public education is important along with some basic knowledge of rainforests and exotic species.

·         A full driver’s license and own vehicle will be necessary for travel to and from the workplace as public transport is infrequent. There may also be occasions when travel is required as a part of your job role and therefore access to your own vehicle will be essential.

The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is a small collection of exotic animals set in Gibraltar Botanic Gardens.

We currently have two vacancies for voluntary internships for a period of 3-6 months (including a one month probationary period). Interns will have the opportunity to work with all the animals in our collection.

Role and Responsibilities:

• The primary role of the interns will be to participate in the daily husbandry and daily routines of the animal department. This includes feeding animals, maintaining enclosures, daily record keeping and animal health checks.

• As an intern, you will also help with the daily supervision of existing volunteers and participate in the training of new volunteers and work experience students.

•    You will also receive training and be expected to participate in keeper talks and park events.

•     You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the different aspects of the Wildlife Park such as veterinary treatment, enrichment and record keeping.

• Where suitable, there may also be opportunities for research projects to be undertaken.

Terms of placement:

• Interns will be required to work from 9am to 5pm five days a week on a rota basis. This will include some weekends and bank holidays as necessary.

Requirements:

•    Preference will be given to applicants with an animal related qualification or working towards an animal related qualification

•    Some experience within the zoo industry or with exotics would be desirable but not essential.

•    Applicants should be enthusiastic, hard-working and have a willingness to learn new skills.

All internships are purely voluntary and as such it is with regret that the Wildlife Park cannot provide any financial support or expenses to those wishing to apply for these positions.
