Colchester Zoo is home to 220 species of animal and is an active member of BIAZA and EAZA and is currently supporting 64 breeding programmes. Colchester Zoo is also passionate about supporting field conservation work and through our charity, Action for the Wild, has donated over £3 million since 2004 to U.K. and global conservation work.

At Colchester Zoo we understand the importance of having the opportunity to gain real world work experience as part of your preparation for working in the animal care industry. This may be to gather evidence to support your studies or to consolidate your theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

About the Student Keeper Programme
The Student Keeper Programme is a year long placement undertaken within our animal keeping sections. Alongside the hands on practical learning, there is a full formal learning programme to allow you to expand your knowledge and gain an insight into the theory of zoo animal husbandry as well as developing professional skills.

Subject areas include Nutrition, Welfare, Ethics, Enclosure Design, Business as well as many more.

Placements are based on a particular group of animals as its main focus, which applicants can express an interest in. Due to the nature of the Zoo’s layout animal sections cover multiple taxa, this means there isn’t a team that exclusively looks after big cats or hoofstock. For example the team we call Tigers have birds, reptiles, primates, inverts, as well as tigers.

Below are the placement focus animal groups:
Hoofstock, Carnivores, Birds, Elephants, Domestic Stock, Sea lions, Reptiles, Small Mammals, Primates
 


Expected duties include, but not limited to:
·      Cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures
·      Providing enrichment
·      Preparing animal diets
·      Participate in animal training
·      Delivering public talks

Requirements
You must be 18 years old or older and you should be enrolled on, or have completed an animal/conservation based course and must have a minimum of a QCA recognised level 3 diploma.

Additional Information

All of our work based learning placements are full-time and will include 5 consecutive days on placement per week. You will also be expected to be on placement over weekends.

Interested in spending 12 months as a Wildlife Veterinarian Mentor? Come and join the work of Save Vietnam's Wildlife (SVW) in rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing animals that are confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade, such as Pangolins, Civets, Leopard Cats, Otters and other species.

Based in the beautiful Cuc Phuong National Park (about 2 hours south of Hanoi) this position is funded by the Australian Volunteer Program. The monthly allowance will allow you to live comfortably in Vietnam, with your food and accommodation, flights to and from the assignment, relocation allowances at the beginning and end of the assignment, health insurance and costs associated with pre-departure briefings in Melbourne and "In Country training" in Hanoi all being covered by the Program.

There will also be opportunities for you to travel to the new SVW Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Breeding Centre which is being established at Pu Mat National Park (about 8 hours south of Hanoi) and work with the bears, primates, turtles and other species currently being held there.

This role, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is designed to connect the local community to our natural heritage as part of a wider conservation project aiming to see Red Squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) return to the Knowsley Estate and the surrounding areas. The post holder will raise awareness to the importance of red squirrel conservation and coordinate the volunteer programme, giving the community an opportunity to reconnect with their natural heritage.

The Secret Owl Garden is Wales’ largest dedicated owl centre based Pembrokeshire. The centre is dedicated to the conservation of owls and visitor education. The ethos of the centre was built around the famous David Attenborough quote “No one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced".

We are a high-quality tourist attraction, offering visitors the chance to experience owls free flying throughout the day. The centre is also well known for providing private and group flying experiences.

Requirements:

We are looking for a candidate with a passion for animal welfare and a team focused attitude who is ready to join our team and work hard to ensure the centre continues to develop and maintain high standards. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, self-motivation, a keen eye for detail and drive to develop new and existing skills.

Our work is based primarily outdoors and can be both mentally and physically demanding. A certain level of physical capability and fitness will be advantageous to the candidate for their own overall well-being and enjoyment in the position.

The role encompasses all aspects of caring for owls and maintaining the centre. This will include cleaning, preparing food, independent weight management, maintenance jobs, flying, training and imprinting owls. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in weight control, flying, training and imprinting owls in their CV and covering letter. Alongside this the role is also heavily focused on customer experience including delivering flying experiences, free flying public displays, conservation talks, educational visits and manning retail spaces. You must always be articulate and presentable.

Ideally you will already be comfortable on a microphone, happy to present and entertain groups of all sizes and varying ages.

The role is worked over 5 days a week (Monday-Sunday), 8:30am – 5pm (4pm in the winter). There is an expectation to participate in staff training and training/manning/imprinting birds outside of these hours, where necessary. This includes working weekends and Bank Holidays. Do not apply if you are a clock watcher, there are occasions that require longer hours at short notice.

A full clean driving licence is required.

The Animal Department at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
It is the responsibility of the animal department to provide a high standard of care for the animals at the park. We achieve this by the supply of suitable diets and enrichment as well as building enclosures which are innovative in their design and offer a stimulating environment for the animals. We aim to interact with the public through talks to effectively communicate important welfare, conservation and environmental messages. The department contributes to conversation by being an active member in European breeding programmes, undertaking fundraising for in situ projects and by facilitating research within the park.
Each member of staff needs to research and learn about conservation issues, have a good knowledge of the animals (in situ and ex situ), the conservation projects we support, breeding programmes we are involved with, experiences we offer and how zoos and parks are organised and work. They also need to have a full knowledge of the park and its visitor facilities.
