Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm is an award-winning zoo set in 100 acres of open countryside just outside Bristol. We welcome over 200,000 visitors each year and we have a strong focus on accessibility as well as education and conservation.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced motivated individual to join our committed friendly team of animal keepers. We are looking to recruit an experienced animal keeper onto our Birds and Reptiles section.

This section is responsible for all the bird species held at the zoo (with the exception of Ostrich and Rhea) and the reptile collection including our Aldabra Giant Tortoises. It also includes our Wings of Wonder collection of Birds of Prey and the team is responsible for delivering our daily program of inspiring free flight shows. This is a full-time position working a 40-hour week on a flexible rota (including weekends and bank holidays).

This is a key role within the team of keepers covering a variety of duties on all taxa. The position will take a proactive role in the daily management of the section as well as helping with other sections when required.

We expect applicants to have a sound knowledge of both Bird and Reptile species as well as experience training Birds for free flight display. Candidates must also have a strong work ethic and good team working and communication skills as well as the ability to maintain high levels of hygiene.

Typical aspects of the role include:

• Assist in the daily management and care of the animals on section.
• Deliver talks, Birds of Prey displays, encounters and experiences to the visiting guests.
• Drive the company vehicle for collection of resources, e.g. feed, medication.

Applicant Requirements:

• Applicants will have at least 1 full year paid work as a Keeper in an animal establishment.
• Hold an animal-based qualification.
• Applicants must have a full driving licence.

Other Job Holder Expectations:

• Ensure effective quality control and continuous improvement in all aspects of the work and responsibilities.
• Mindful of the visitor experience in all aspects of your work.
• Demonstrate professionalism towards sensitive and confidential information.
• Comply with and promote Health and Safety policies and procedures and to undertake recommended Health and Safety training as and when required.
• Undertake such other duties as are relevant with the position.
• Willingness to work within the Christian ethos of the zoo.

The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust

 

The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust (ARC) is seeking ecologists to deliver an exciting new project, “Recovering the pool frog, England’s rarest amphibian”. Thanks to a substantial award from Government’s Green Recovery Challenge Fund, ARC is initiating this project to enhance the conservation status of the pool frog (Pelophylax lessonae) in England. The pool frog is currently found at only two sites in Norfolk, having been reintroduced from Sweden after going extinct in the 1990s. This new project will include habitat restoration, captive rearing, monitoring, volunteer engagement, communications, and planning future pool frog reintroductions. It will involve working with a wide range of partners, including regulators, landowners, volunteers and researchers.

 

Pool Frog Recovery Project Assistant, Salary: £19,000 pro rata, plus pension, Hours: Part-time, 0.6 FTE (3 days per week), Contract: Fixed term contract for 6 months starting 1 March 2021 or as soon as possible after this date, Location: Home-based, within easy reach of the Thetford (Norfolk) area, Reporting to: Pool Frog Recovery Project Manager, ARC (currently being recruited)

 

Pool Frog Recovery Project Officer, Salary: £22,000 plus pension, Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week, Contract: Fixed term contract for 9 months starting 1 March 2021 or as soon as possible after this date, Location: Home-based, within easy reach of the Thetford (Norfolk) area, Reporting to: Pool Frog Recovery Project Manager, ARC (currently being recruited).

 

Pool Frog Recovery Project Manager, Salary: £27,500 plus pension, Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week, Contact: Fixed term contract starting as soon as possible and ending 31 March 2022, with possibility of extension subject to funding, Location: Home-based, within easy reach of the Thetford (Norfolk) area, Reporting to: Conservation Director, ARC.

You will be ambitious and creative, realistic and solution focussed, and a skilled communicator, adept at coaxing the best from everyone in your team.

•    Minimum 10 years taxonomically relevant zoo and/or field conservation programme experience, coupled with extensive and proven staff leadership experience.
•    Demonstrable knowledge of intensive species management and animal collection planning.

•    Relevant tertiary qualification in biological/ecological/conservation sciences – additionally a post-graduate qualification in biological or conservation science would be an advantage.

Northumberland Country Zoo is an up-and-coming family run zoo in the heart of Northumberland which is constantly expanding year after year with over 100 species. We are provisional members of BIAZA with high standards in all aspects of the collection including husbandry and conservation. We have various species from Snow Leopards, Raccoons & Capybara to Reptiles, Parrots & Raptors all currently based on 20 acres.

 

Due to expansion and ambitious future plans, we have an exciting opportunity for a likeminded team-player who will fit in with our current animal care team.

 

The animal keeper will be required to work in a team environment ensuring that day-to-day husbandry is carried out in an effective and timely manner using the current standard operating procedures.

 

Potential candidates will be required to do a trial day at Northumberland Zoo.

 

The role involves:

 

· Day to day husbandry routines for various different species which may include mammals, birds, reptiles and/or domestic species.

 

· Providing enrichment opportunities for various species on a daily basis.

 

· Decorating and maintaining exhibits.

 

· Strict adherence to risk assessments, bio security and safe working practices.

 

· Taking ownership for the presentation of the zoo by maintaining high standards.

 

· In this role, you will be reporting to the Team Leader of your animal keeping section.

 

To be considered for this post the following is essential:

 

· Have at least 2 years of professional zoo work experience working with animals in a zoo environment.

 

· Have high animal welfare standards with regards to the care and daily husbandry routines.

 

· Be qualified in an appropriate captive wild animal husbandry, biological or conservation discipline.

 

· Have great observational skills when working with the animals in the park, understanding animal behaviour.

 

· Have the ability to keep accurate records relating to animal welfare.

 

· Full driver's license and access to vehicle required due to rural setting of zoo.

 

It is also essential that candidates are able to demonstrate the following personal competencies:

 

· Have great communication skills for working within a team.

 

· Be able to work effectively and with minimum supervision within a timely manner.

 

· Have strong interpersonal skills and be confident to interact with the public.

 

· Be physically fit as this role includes a lot of walking, bending and lifting various weights.

 

· Experience with various types of animal enrichment.

 

Working at Northumberland Country Zoo

 

This full-time position requires someone to be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including working on weekends, during school holidays as well as bank holidays on a rota with the rest of the current animal care team.

 

Candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week and will be entitled to statutory holiday entitlement which does not include bank holidays.

 

This position will pay at the rate of the national minimum wage.
