£15,897 - £16,734 pa, 2 year fixed-term contracts

On behalf of the Great Crane Project, WWT and the Pensthorpe Conservation Trust, in partnership with the RSPB and Viridor Environmental Credits Company, are looking to recruit two aviculturists to carry out a range of aviculture and post-release monitoring activities to ensure successful reintroduction of the common crane (Grus grus) to the Somerset Levels and Moors.

The aviculturists will be hardworking and conscientious individuals assisting with the artificial incubation of eggs and the day-to-day care of crane chicks according to protocols to safeguard the health and natural behaviours of young birds. Once the birds are released, post-holders will assist with scientific monitoring, survey and research activities and public engagement programmes.

Experience of captive animal management including successful artificial incubation of birds’ eggs and the hand-raising of birds is essential as is the ability to manage stock records. Public speaking and IT skills are a requirement as the post-holders will be expected to communicate to a range of audiences.

Position 1 – WWT employee

Position 2 - Pensthorpe Conservation Trust employee

Both positions will be based at WWT Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, for 6 months of the year followed by up to 6 months at the RSPB release site in Somerset.
