SENIOR VETERINARIAN – JOHANNESBURG ZOO



An enthusiastic veterinarian experienced in zoological medicine and with strong leadership qualities is required to lead the Veterinary Department at Johannesburg Zoo. The Department is responsible for the veterinary care of approximately 2000 animals of 370 species including invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Responsibilities and Competencies:
Ensure high standard of veterinary care of the Zoological collection, including anaesthesia, diagnostics (radiography, ultrasonography and endoscopy) and treatment; maintain a strong emphasis on preventative medicine, ensure biosecurity of collection; provide input into animal husbandry, enclosure design and nutrition of the Zoo collection; work with the Animal Department staff to maintain highest standards of animal welfare; manage the veterinary hospital and quarantine unit; effective leadership and people management; employee training and development; assist with implementation of the overall animal collection plan; financial and supply chain management, development of and participation in ex-situ and in-situ conservation and research projects, supervision and training of veterinary students; accurate and comprehensive record keeping; compliance with relevant veterinary and health and safety legislation.

Requirements:
Veterinary degree and post-graduate qualification in Zoological Medicine plus at least 3 years’ experience working in the field of zoological medicine. Expertise in avian and reptilian medicine is essential, with experience of fish medicine an advantage. People management skills, research experience, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to write scientific papers; and good IT skills.

Remuneration:
Minimum annual basic salary of R411,013.00; R7800 Annual cell phone allowance ; 7.5% Co. Contribution to Pension Fund; Company Contribution to Medical Aid : 60% of the Medical Aid rates capped at R2850 for a maximum of 4 members.
The position also includes accommodation on the Zoo property in a 3-bedroomed house.
