Water Laboratory/Life Support Systems Technician

The Water Laboratory/LSS Technician is responsible for working closely with the Life Support Systems Manager and Water Laboratory Manager to ensure the quality of the water and proper operation of the closed system exhibit tanks within the Living Collections department.

*Major Job Responsibilities:*

- Provides complete coordination of life support system functions.
- Performs water quality testing including the collection, analyzing, and
recording of water samples using proven laboratory techniques for closed
saltwater and freshwater aquatic systems.
- Monitors levels of various components, including ozone, pH,
temperature, salinity, carbon dioxide, phosphates, chlorine, bromine,
magnesium, strontium, dissolved organics, calcium, iodine, ammonia, nitrite,
nitrate, copper sulfate, ORP, alkalinity, as well as, microbiological
- Assists with maintenance, troubleshooting, implementation, and design
of life support systems.
- Operates and interfaces with automated life support system control
- Works closely with a diverse staff of employees and volunteers.
- Follows and enforces safety standards and procedures in the water
laboratory and around life support equipment.
- Performs other duties as required.


- BS/BA in Chemistry, Biology, or related field.
- 1+ year in similar position, preferably at an AZA-accredited aquarium
or comparable institution, with a strong emphasis on closed marine and
freshwater systems is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of public aquarium life support systems operation and
mechanical aptitude.
- Advanced knowledge of water chemistry sampling and analysis.
- Excellent laboratory skills, including the ability to analyze data,
prepare technical reports, and interpret and evaluate technical information.

- Strong technical writing skills, effective oral communication and
problem solving skills are essential.
- Ability to adhere/enforce OSHA and Cal OSHA standards in an aquarium
- Ability to work in an industrial work environment, with low headroom
and difficult access.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment, good
communicator with strong technical writing skills.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and work with chemicals and utilize personal
protective devices.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends,
holidays and some evenings.
