The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), a charity founded in 1909, owns and manages Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park. The Zoo is the 2nd most popular paying visitor attraction in Scotland, offering an excellent day out to more than 600,000 visitors annually, and has an international reputation for its very active conservation and education programmes. The Highland Wildlife Park is a premier visitor attraction based at Kincraig outside Aviemore and features indigenous Scottish species, some now extinct in the wild.



A vacancy has arisen for an Animal Keeper to work within the Animals, Conservation and Education Department team. It would be desirable if the successful candidate will have 3 years relevant experience working with primates and will have passed the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of Zoo Animals, or are happy to complete this course within 3 years.

The post will involve weekend and some evening work.



Salary for this post will be in the region of £13.000 - £16.000 depending on experience.

On behalf of the Great Crane Project, WWT and the Pensthorpe Conservation Trust, in partnership with the RSPB and Viridor Environmental Credits Company, are looking to recruit two aviculturists to carry out a range of aviculture and post-release monitoring activities to ensure successful reintroduction of the common crane (Grus grus) to the Somerset Levels and Moors.

The aviculturists will be hardworking and conscientious individuals assisting with the artificial incubation of eggs and the day-to-day care of crane chicks according to protocols to safeguard the health and natural behaviours of young birds. Once the birds are released, post-holders will assist with scientific monitoring, survey and research activities and public engagement programmes.

Experience of captive animal management including successful artificial incubation of birds’ eggs and the hand-raising of birds is essential as is the ability to manage stock records. Public speaking and IT skills are a requirement as the post-holders will be expected to communicate to a range of audiences.

Great Ape Keeper Vacancies

Zoos SA are looking for individuals with primate husbandry experience, particularly the field of Great Apes, to work at their Adelaide Zoo or Monarto Zoo sites. Candidates must possess experience in caring for animals in a captive environment.

Applicants with a Certificate III in Zoo Keeping or similar are encouraged to apply. Candidates must possess a wide range of Zoo Keeper skills including the highest possible standards of welfare, husbandry, species management, conservation research and enrichment for the animals in our care. Additionally candidates must have proven animal training and conditioning skills. Experience with great apes is essential.

Candidates must demonstrate excellent team working abilities, but also the ability to work independently, a flexible approach to work and a commitment to Health and Safety regulations.

Two positions are available:

Monarto Zoo is South Australia’s open range zoo located 70 km from Adelaide’s CBD. It is gaining a well-deserved reputation as a leader in conservation of endangered species. The site is large and vehicles are required to travel between exhibits so you will need to hold a Drivers Licence and have experience with manual vehicles. Possession of a firearms licence or willingness to hold one would be advantageous.

This position will work within the Primate Team and is responsible for our chimpanzees, and based at the largest chimpanzee facility in Australia. As such, chimpanzee experience is essential, with proven skills and experience in managing social groups and introductions. Knowledge and experience within complex facilities would be advantageous. Experience with smaller primates, both husbandry and exhibit planning, is desirable, as currently we also have colobus but anticipate future developments include; lemurs, vervet monkeys and baboons.

Adelaide Zoo is South Australia’s city zoo. It has shown a long-term commitment to great ape conservation, husbandry and management, and is seeking an individual who will continue to support and further develop these objectives in the years to come.

This position will work within the Primate team, with particular emphasis upon orangutans. Candidates will ideally possess at least two years proven captive orangutan experience. Knowledge and skills in primate behavioural management and mixed species exhibits is essential. There is the potential to be involved in mothering training and the regional surrogacy program, and the ability to think innovatively will see no limits to the opportunities available.

Husbandry

1.1 Obtain, prepare and provide food to animals in accordance with established diets, feeding schedules and procedures.

1.3 Provide animals with nesting and bedding materials and other items required to meet their behavioural requirements, particularly in relation to breeding or raising offspring.

The post will involve presenting daily bird of prey and parrot displays during peak season as well as joining the education team to deliver talks to school groups and members of the public.

The position will work alongside our current animal presenting team as well as receiving training from a professional animal training consultant. The position will run from March to October inclusive with the possibility to extend the contract for the right applicant.

Experience in bird of prey and parrot training is highly advantageous along with a thorough understanding of animal behaviour. At least 2 years experience working in a zoo environment desirable.

We are currently looking for an experienced keeper who has a minimum of 2 years experience working in a Zoological collection. City and Guilds Animal Management certificate and ability to use ARKS preferred but not essential. You would be part of a small team split into three sections responsible for the care and welfare of a varied collection of species, specializing in small carnivores, felids and prosimians. You will required to work 5 days out of 7 and on public and bank holidays.


RSCC is a small facility and potential candidates must be able to work well in a small team, be an well organized and self motivated individual with high standards of hygiene and cleanliness which are essential in this role. Previous experience caring for small carnivores and/or felids would be very beneficial in this role. The opportunity for this position to become more senior in the near future is also available.



Position Start Date: March 1st

The Role

In this role you will take responsibility for ensuring the continual development and innovation within the displays areas. Naturally you’ll be responsible for all maintenance plans of the life support systems and the cleanliness of our displays as well as the development of suitable diets and feeds for our creatures, ensuring we present world class displays. In addition you’ll drive conservation and education within the aquarium ensuring we meet and exceed our zoo licensing requirements.


The Person

Using your experience, gained by working in a similar environment, you will have a robust knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry; and have the ability to communicate to all employees and clients as well as deliver a highly immersive experience to all our visitors. Your challenge…

Main responsibilities include:

Maintain a high level of animal husbandry on the Section

Provide relevant training to designated stock to present animals in an enjoyable and informative way

Maintain training of stock, and initiate ideas and training

Ensure the Health and Safety of self, internal and external customers

Maintain a constant level of work in the Section with a view to public appreciation

Ensure our guests feel immersed into interactive, educational and informative talks and displays of natural behaviour

Monitor levels of food stores and supplies to minimise wastage.

Work closely with the Head of Section to ensure sharing of best practices and consistency of procedures and processes across Park wherever possible



What you’ll bring…

Our ideal candidate will have/be:

Working pattern…

We have 2 full time positions available:

1 x 6 months

1 x 12-18 months

They are both based at Chessington World of Adventures.

Typical working pattern will be 8 hours on a 5 day basis collating to a 40 hour week. This will however be determined by the needs of the business, you will be required to work weekends and bank holidays. You will be based primarily on site, however there may be a need to undertake occasional travel to other attractions.

BIAZA, the professional association for zoos and aquariums in Britain and Ireland, based in Regents Park, London has a vacancy for a Communications Manager. The post is four days a week. You will work as part of a small team. Your role will focus on the communications (both internal and external) and administrative roles of the Association.



Post of Communications Manager

You will assist with the support and leadership that BIAZA provides for its membership and communication with them. This includes: direct communication with membership; communication with media and public; assistance with the preparation of BIAZA meetings and participation in them; assistance with the preparation of publications and policy documents; representing the association at meetings and acting as a spokesperson for the association and its membership.

You will also be expect to oversee the delivery of the communications part of the current BIAZA strategy



Qualifications, experience

You should hold a qualification, equivalent to degree level, in the area of communications / media skills / marketing. You should have an interest in the zoo and aquarium community and the role of the modern zoo.



Primary Responsibilities

• Direct communication with the membership and providing support for them

• Direct communication with external organizations, public and media including the production of press releases

• Ensuring the communication sections of the BIAZA strategy are being carried out effectively

• To ensure brand delivery and continuity

• Liaising with commercial companies and coordinating BIAZA promotions with the membership

• Ensuring that all methods of communication with members are updated and effective and maintaining and maintaining and efficient office

• Assisting with the preparation and production of BIAZA publications

• Organizing and assisting with the preparation of BIAZA meetings and events

• Maintaining the BIAZA website and other electronic means of communication and ensure the information is relevant and updated

• Acting as a BIAZA spokesperson when required

• Assisting other staff members with the development of presentations and publicity materials

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, out-going and approachable. Due to the stand alone nature of this role reliability is essential. Animal husbandry and education skills and experience are a requirement of this post. Since the 1970's Durrell has been working with the Saint Lucia Ministry of Agriculture's Forestry Department on conservation of the island's biodiversity. Durrell's conservation approach is primarily species led and we focus on the monitoring, protection and management of rare, endemic and highly threatened species.

To achieve our conservation goals, we rely on the support that volunteers can provide to these long term projects. We are currently looking for four volunteers to commit to six months in St Lucia, starting in February 2010.

In the first half of 2010, volunteer activities will be focused around the following, with an emphasis on the first two:


* Implementing control techniques for removing alien invasive iguanas that have been inadvertently introduced into the wild in the South West of Saint Lucia and threaten the genetic integrity of Saint Lucia iguanas (in the North East of Saint Lucia) through hybridization and competition.

* Management of a translocated meta-population of Saint Lucia whiptail lizards.

* Monitoring the southern sub-population of the white-breasted thrasher on Saint Lucia.

* Examining gene flow and geographic structuring of DNA variation in the fragmented northern sub-population of the white-breasted thrasher.

Ideally, applicants will have a background in biological sciences (preferably at graduate level) and experience of working in the tropics. However, similar prior experience, a determination to work, under sometimes uncomfortable or frustrating conditions, combined with good physical fitness and careful attention to data recording are the most important attributes we look for. Volunteers will work alongside SLFD staff and local communities around our field sites.

We need you to cover your flight, vaccinations and personal equipment but we will cover your insurance and in-country costs for basic subsistence and accommodation. Personal equipment that you will need to cover are basic (work clothes, good boots, reliable watch, torch, etc) but we do also ask you to bring your own tent and sleeping mat.

This is the ideal opportunity for someone looking for practical conservation experience working with some of the world's most threatened species. However, this is also fulltime work that requires the volunteer to be independent and self-motivated. Working hours are typically long and usually for 6 days per week with one day off. But the opportunity to live and work in a tropical country on real conservation projects will be more than compensation for this for the right candidates.
