Animal Keeper: Great Apes

Animal Keeper: Great Apes

This full-time role was previously advertised in July 2014. However, the successful candidate was unable to take up the post and we are, therefore, re-advertising.

Please note, previous applicants need not re-apply

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), a World Primate Centre - holds a large variety of primates, including all 4 types of great ape (gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo, orang-utan) plus a range of other species. We have impressive breeding records for many of these species and recent changes to husbandry practices have enabled more natural groupings and enclosure modifications. We have more to do!

We are going through an exciting period of change as this zoo develops and so are looking for dynamic, knowledgeable individuals to help lead the teams forward.

Currently we have a vacancy for an Animal Keeper on the Great Apes section. The section manages all the great ape taxa. This is a key role which will involve working on the section, covering all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping; as well as interacting with the zoo visitors and assisting with the training and development of staff.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with a proven track record in zoo animal management. You will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a keeper, preferably at least half of which is with great apes.

You will also be able to demonstrate a substantial working knowledge of the natural history and management of key species. You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and excellent communication skills and be committed to continued professional development of yourself and other staff.
An animal-related qualification, such as the BIAZA approved ANCMZA or DZMAA, would be advantageous.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform and 31 days holiday per annum.
