Mammal Keeper - Twilight Team

Mammal Keeper - Twilight Team

Chester Zoo
Cheshire

Chester Zoo is the UK’s No.1 Zoo and is also one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Mammal Keeper to join our Twilight Team, with the possibility of being trained on several other mammal sections to cover any shortcomings in staffing levels.

The Mammal Keeper post will involve the daily care and management of a variety of Mammal species including spectacled bears, bats (Rodrigues, Seba’s & Livingstone), giant anteaters and Red pandas to name a few.

Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and our new Mammal Keeper must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.  The role will also involve promoting the conservation work at Chester Zoo through daily interaction with visitors on site.

The successful candidate will deliver personalised animal experiences to small groups of visitors in both public zoo spaces, behind the scenes and in animal enclosures. These encounters generate revenue for the zoo, and so guests are hosted to the highest standards of customer care and service in accordance with Risk Assessments, Health and Safety regulations and animal welfare.

We are looking for someone with proven experience of working with relevant mammal species and experience of working in a zoo or safari park. The successful candidate will be educated to HND or degree level in Zoo Animal Management/Zoological Science, or have the equivalent experience. We expect our next Twilight Keeper to have excellent observational skills and to have a good working knowledge of operant conditioning. They will also have outstanding communication skills when interacting with visitors to deal with their questions, talks and requests for information.
Our next Mammal Keeper will ideally be competent in the use of computers and basic software packages. They will ideally have proven experience with implementing environmental enrichment and experience of working within strict SWP. A full clean driving licence is also required.

Salary is £16,984.10 per annum for a 40 hour week on a rota basis (including some weekends and bank holidays).
